The
TouchSmart tx2z isn't the first multitouch laptop out, but HP's pretty adamant that it's the first multitouch "consumer" convertible tablet. Semantics aside, we're interested in finding out just how impressed you early adopters are with what the company has crafted. Are the
multitouch capabilities as awesome as you had hoped? If not, what areas could be improved? Would you still recommend it to prospective buyers looking to give their digits a bit more work? We get the feeling we'll see loads of multitouch laptops gracing our presence over the next few months / years, so make sure you really unload on this one. It's what makes progress possible, people.
no one bought it yet..
that makes me feel very lonely as i'm replying to you on mine right now...
Marketing needs to be better.
I own a tx1 and use it as my sketch book. Every time I pull it out and start drawing in a starbucks or restaurant I'll have 3 or 4 people come over to me and ask what it is, how much it costs, are they brand new? Why haven't I heard about these things before? Where can you buy them?
The idea that you could write on your computer, draw on your computer and touch the sceen is always really exciting to them and want to know to know everything about it.
A good widely marketed 30 second spot could make these things sell really well.
Ive had two of them personally....and both have had faulty keyboards...so I guess that I would change that!
That sucks, did they cover it under warranty?
I would just make the screen a multi-touch screen as well as have a more precise stylus = to a top wacom tablet.
I have one as well. When you say a faulty keyboard what do you mean? If you mean that it stops working that happened to me as well. I found out that there is some bug where whenever you start the laptop in tablet mode, it disables the keyboard somehow. The only way to make it work again is by shutting it down and removing the battery, then booting it back up (not in tablet mode obviously).
@ Hunter: I think that was a bug in the BIOS for the hardware, and I think an update fixed it. Dig around the Tabletpcreview.com forums, there are answers there.
A member on our forum got one too in Hong Kong, only to have become a victim of the faulty keyboard as well! According to the shop, HP seemed to have shipped a problematic batch with this model.
Mine had the problem with they keyboard once early on when I first got it (soon after it was first released). But after having shut it off and removed the battery for a minute and then replacing it, I have never had another problem with it, it is working just fine for me. No complaints.
I have a tx 1000 (older model) and the mobo and wifi died on me. I guess make sure that the mobo is excellent. my sister's laptop (same) had her mobo die on her too 2 months after warranty expired. Personally, this may be the last HP i buy, but i must say, i really like my laptop.
I had the tx1000, but the motherboard went bad twice in a 9 month period. Needless to say I no longer have it and don't buy HP laptops anymore.
I have a friend with a similar looking HP tablet, not multitouch though... the disk drive falls out if he doesn't pick it up right.
That's actually a design feature. You can change out the optical drive for a "dummy", which theoretically reduces the weight of the tablet (and might squeeze out a few seconds more of battery life). I've got the tx1320us, which is the "grandfather" of this one.
I have a tx2500z, and it has a removable optical drive.
That's really weird that it falls out. He should have it replaced. Mine cannot be pulled out, even if you *really, really* try. (I just did) unless you push that switch over all the way on the bottom (And even that isn't done lightly)
tx1320 is not quite the grandfather, we've got the tx1000. Still a great PC though, just wish it had an active digitizer.
The 1320 is a tx1000. It's just a specifically configured model of it.
mine works fantastically. Weird. I love my tablet. I wish I had waited a few more weeks to get my tx2500. About two weeks after I got mine the tx2z came out... I was bummed. lol. I wish I had the new one though. I'd love to have multi touch! I guess I'd make it free and I'd make the 2500 upgradeable... which I suppose would be technically possible... but too much work and money to be worth it. lol
I have a tx2500 laptop, and my cd drive is falling out all the time. I once turned my computer around in class to put it away, and the drive flew out and slid across the aisle. It still works but has a dent in the door, and I'm now always putting my hand against it when I move the computer. In my opinion, the whole case needs to be sturdier, like my old HP DV5000. I never had any hardware problems with it and it's 4 years old. Otherwise, I love it, and I'm sad to hear the newer tx2z models don't have an eraser on the stylus, I use it all the time when I take notes.
axe't into trash
I've played around with a couple touch screen / multi touch and the response time is just annoying. The keyboards like Christian said are not likable and i think it would need a fair bit of improvement before i am convinced to use one for myself. They are machines which would be fine if you get used to it, but out of the box, start to use easily is not the case yet. Bit more dedication would be appreciated by companies working on it.
Thing runs to hot, imo.
*too
Typical HP consumer laptop then.
Yeah man, My friend hasa dv model with a 2.0 ghz athlon 64 x2. The thing throttles to 600mhz after 3 minutes of use on a cold table, even after I undervolted it. Gets up to like 160 degrees even at that speed. surprised it hasn;t overheated - but if it was cooled properly, the machine would actually be pretty nice.
I had a tx1000, and at one point the external temperature of the laptop got up to 220 degrees farenheit.
hmmm... how about lower the price to affordable...
Intel instead of AMD
second'd
I third THAT my friend!
ME 4!!!!
There really is nothing wrong with Turion Ultra X2's for consumer 'books. If it was intended as a high end machine i would have expected Intel :)
fifth that
6th that.
Until there is a 45nm Turion X2 I will stay clear.
I will also stay clear of HP after my first dying (and needing a full CPU/Mobo replacement) 2 weeks out of warranty and my second (Dv2000 Turion X2) died outside of warranty for heat, HP told me they could do nothing so I sold it for parts and 1 month later was contacted about having it repaired under recall due to Nvidia Mobo issues.
Thank you HP I will never buy from you again, Acer have been giving me great quality & service ever since.
Do you even own one of these?
This is HP's consumer tablet, its cheaper and uses the AMD processor. If you want an Intel, you can check out HP's more expensive business model tablet.
VASTLY decrease heat and noise, decrease wieght, increase battery life, add programmable buttons around the screen bezel, and make proper use of that removable D-Bay by offering choice of second HDD.
@ Reactive
I second the programmable buttons around the screen bezel, and make proper use of that removable D-Bay by offering choice of second HDD.
oh yea and get a custom HP touchscreen version of ubuntu would be great - I truly dislike vista
The bay is probably the same as in my tx2500z.
I'd LOVE to see a second battery slapped in there. I don't use the optical drive all that often. I leave it out, and in my bag, because I don't like to be without one, but I'd like to make use of the space.
Got A Dell XT (Led Screen,Multi-Touch) From Outlet Store for - $526 (20% off Coupon)
Actually...How does the Dell Latitude XT compare to the HP tx2z?
I havent used the Tx2z but I had a TX1000 and it sucked balls.
Leo: How do you like your Dell XT? I met Microsoft product manager at CES who is testing out Windows 7 MultiTouch on her Dell XT. I didn't get a chance to ask her opinion on it. Also, which outlet was that? Thanks-- greghwin at yahoo dawt kom.
am i the only one who thinks its screen's too grainy?
Big white Apple sticker, right over the logo. Perfect.
You crazy? That will put the price up by $2000.
What is wrong with Apple fanboys? Putting a Ferrari badge on a Mitsubishi doesn't make it a Ferrari or even run like a Ferrari. Why the hell would you put an apple sticker on a HP. Some go and massacre all Apple fanboys, I'm sure there is a medal on offer somewhere for it.
i think we have the next iTroll on our hands
your f@ggotry disgusts me.
perish.
ooh, look at me zoom in and out with two fingers
well ive had this laptop for about 2 months now.
my fingerprint reader hasnt worked for 1 1/2 months :(
ans the laptop mouse buttons are a bit annoyin id like em bigger.
the scren swivels in the clockwise rotation but not counter clockwise. so if you want to veiw something on the right side of the laptop your outta luck.
the fan is insanely loud. you can hear it even with music playing and the volume all the way up. and the multitouch features are very glitchy (but waht in vista isnt) and if you want to dual boot anything becides vista theres no multitouch support.
i have ubuntu linux installed also and theres no sound :( and theres no touchscreen features at all. bummer
also id like the power "switch" to be a button. not much of a grip on the swith takes a lil effort to turn it off.
but hey, i dont regret getting this laptop at all. great upgrade from the dv6226us. all the cons are minor laptop is great very fast and highly upgradeable. and come windows 7, hopefully hp starts to support its multitouch features if it doesnt already :)
