iriver P20 PMP priced and dated in Japan
We're still no closer to understanding if iriver's P20 is destined for a US release, but at least the thing's about to ship in one corner of the globe. The company has decided on a February 27th release date in the wonderfully brilliant nation of Japan, where eager PMP shoppers will be able to exchange ¥39,800 ($436) for an 80GB model. For those who've forgotten the details, it sports a 4.1-inch OLED touchscreen (480 x 272), a built-in FM tuner, USB 2.0 connectivity, support for a litany of file formats, an optional card reader for extra expansion and a rechargeable battery good for at least nine hours of playback. Look on the bright side -- you've been itching for an excuse to visit Osaka, right?

i have a boner
Looks nice, and I like iRiver products, but for this kind of money we should be seeing a high res screen, 800 x 480 or similar.
4.1-inch OLED touchscreen
Please clarify. Are you saying that 480 x 272 is good enough for a 4.1 inch OLED?
I would disagree. On a 4" device (iPaq 4700) the difference between VGA and half VGA quality is apparent. I have a Spinn with a 3.3" screen and 480 x 272 OLED screen. The video quality is good, but not great.
Does this much more expensive bigger screened device not deserve a very sharp screen? It would be competing against the Archos 5, which is less expensive for a bigger screen and more capabilities including very good Internet browing, and has 800 x 480 resolution (though not OLED) screen.
Who would pay 450$ for this?
@gylman:
iriver's products are always way too pricey. You can still find a 4gb clix2 for twice the price of other players in its league. I bought a 4gb clix2 for $200 when I could have got an ipod or a creative for much less. The same goes with Spinn and any other products to come from iriver. But they are quality products. And you are right when you say, who will will pay $450 for this. People would prefer an archos or itouch over this. I wonder what iriver's strategy is when it comes to competing in the market.
Is it just me, or does that look like an old school MiniDisc player with an LCD screen?
Yeah same thoughts here ghetto as f***
You are right...and I presume that little disc (not the spin wheel on top) is for tuning radio...looks like one from an old '80s radio set.
Yes, it does, or like something older than minidisc... Fantastic retro styling. Who does iriver's product design, is it in-house or? It is consistently awesome, ever since those old Toblerone-keyring mp3 players. When almost everyone else is just badly aping Apple's admittedly nice (but slightly tired) aesthetic, iriver makes distinctive, original products like this.
Don't get me wrong I won't be buying it or any other iriver product (my phone plays mp3s just fine thanks) but it's a great-looking player.
I have a hard time finding a justification for a $450 price tag.
It's screen is nice and big and an OLED touchscreen . . but past that they could have put a 120GB HDD in there just as easily, shrunk the area around the screen . . I assume they could have made it slimmer looking at other HDD based PMPs that have basically the same specs. So why 450? no more than 300 I'd say.
it looks like a camera
Oh my, I've been looking to replace my 20GB iRiver (yes, the R was once capitalized) iHP-120. This is far too expensive for the specs, but I'm glad to see any HDD-based player coming out of iriver nowadays. Gives me hope, you know?
Dude, stop plugging your website.
does it play x264 720p mkvs?
Somehow... that upper jogdial and that headphonejack... they will never get along very well. It looks great, but only for a minute. The materials seem very nice nonetheless. Does it come with an optical out?
hot damn,,,this blows away the ipod touch on specs. lets see if user interface will be as smooth n browser as easy to use.,cant get all wet yet, must make sure its consumer approved ,tried n tested. dont rush to conclusions now.will this kill the king of pmp's ,apple touch.,.,???
it is square.
We are living in 2009 right?
Where the hell is Charbax? He was due in here 2 hours ago, to give us all a leason in why Archos's 5,000,000 glitches units are far superior to this. tick tock
He's too busy doing damage control on his ArchosFans website.
Damage control? What do you mean?
BRING BACK HDD IRIVER PLAYERS.
It's awfully fat. Nearly two Spinns and well more than two Touches. The OLED is sexy, the resolution is a disappointment.
Well, considering it has an 80GB HDD, I'm not suprised it's a bit bigger.
It has the memory of roughly two-and-a-half iPod touches, and about 5 Spinns
dont look like gonna be a seller in america.,.,
Unattractive, $436, low res screen, 9 hour battery ?
No,thanks.
finally, iriver is making something useful again (useful as in more than 2gb of storage). I lost interest in them several years ago, but hopefully they'll start making more HDD players again soon.
this thing is butt
