Sony Ericsson's W395 Walkman and C903 Cybershot bring more of the same

In the run-up to Mobile World Congress we've been treated to a windfall of hot new phones and technologies. Then there's Sony Ericsson's W395 Walkman and C903 Cyber-shot. The W395 is a new Walkman slider with built-in stereo speakers meant for the "youth" market, a market that seemingly hates 3G or storage since the quad-band GSM/EDGE device ships with a measly 1GB memory card. It will, however, be affordable and feature a 2 megapixel camera when it ships in Q1. The C903 Cyber-shot slider already spotted around here a few times brings a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with sliding lens cover as we've seen -- give the cover a slide and this cameraphone's ready for duty. The camera features face detection and a Smile Shutter mode that automatically snaps the shutter when a happy face is detected. It also packs a 2.4-inch display, Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion slot and, get this... it'll even make phone calls. This worldphone rides quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE for 10 hours of talk or 400 hours of standby with UMTS/HSPA 900/2100 (or 850/1900/2100 in the C903a configuration) frequencies bringing the 3G sometime in Q2. Beautiful devices for what they are -- guess we're just spoiled by all the MWC goods expected in Barcelona from RIM, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Acer, Android, Palm, Microsoft... you get the idea.
Update: Details on a 5 megapixel C901 candybar were also released sans the Cyber-shot branding and any fanfare even though it's similarly spec'd to the C903.

God I wish Sony would make the Ultimate Phone
honestly i dont feel that they are trying
I feel for every phone they release nokia, samsung, moto, and the rest release 5 mobiles
? I thought that its Sony that is in best competition against Nokia's dominant (but decaying) market share.
Moto? r u serious?
"Sony Ericsson's W395 Walkman and C903 Cybershot bring more of the same" wtf is this all about? There are people who just want a normal phone you realise?
okay on the moto
but this is sony, when they make something they make it unique
they go the extra mile and add features and technology
people who want average are price oriented, and would not by sony because their are much cheaper phones
Nokia knows this and that's why you have A LOT of crappy phones and few exceptional phone the E and N series
I'm feeling that...
3" OLED touchy feely screen with haptic response
5 to 8 mp cam with that crazy back side illumination tech and that other crazy tech which means the camera is optically 3x zoomed in and compensates via software to take it back to 1x and a good lens. flash... of some sort...
quad band HSPA+
android
wifi
one of those new batteries companies seem to be working on that last for ages.
inductive recharging or whatever it's called
thin form factor
uhhh am i missing anything?
ps. i couldn't be fucked looking names for some of the tech up, sorry.
No touchscreen?
Sucks. Why can't they just come up with a new UIQ phone featuring a Cybershot Cam?!
UIQ is dead...
There is some talk about a new SE Symbian announcement due next week, though...
My UIQ is DEAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!
I am using my good old W800i since my HTC Touch died a Week ago (Touchscreen doesn´t respond to anything).
This first "walkman"-branded phone does everything it promises so well... Calendar/ Contacts sync with my PC, there is plenty of space on my upgraded Memory Stick Pro Duo for Pictures and Music...
Using a "Dumbphone" after 1,5 years of using a "Smartphone" with windows Mobile is somewhat refreshing. everything works so seamlessly.
great phone, SE!
That's nothing.
I discarded my car in favor of horse and buggy, got rid of central heating and electricity since fire is so much practical, and I swore I will never touch a medicine again no matter how ill I might be.
Now , that's refreshing dude!
It looks good. And honestly, stop thinking about yourselves. Not everyone has that much money to buy a phone. I say build good, cheap phones for middle and lower class and excellent a little bit more pricey phones for whoever can afford it, k?
"and, get this... it'll even make phone calls."
Hahahaha, thanks for making my morning.
when can sony ever design something exciting?
The tragedy of Sony Erikson is that while their phones are crappy things sporting antiquated technology and lacking all features of modern communication devices, they are not even cheap to buy.
Lots of much cheaper and much better and complete cell phones are available to the budget minded consumer, leaving every SE client that compares his phone to those of other producers with the lingering doubt of having been ripped off.
When SE decided to produce an high end phone (the infamous X1), it had to ask HTC to make it, it took them over one year to brig it to market (by which time it was just another antiquated SE b.s.), and when finally it came out it was deemed by all reviewers bar none and everyone who tried it, the worse win mob. device in the world (and of course one of the most expensive).
It is so badly thought out that while sporting a (unresponsive) touch screen , they did'nt make it flush, so that the touch inputs are possible only in the middle of the screen.
Strangely enough all troubles of Erikson started after the alliance with Sony, that while it produces excellent (if overpriced) products, obviously could' nt care less less about their cell phone division.
Sorry, but what you just said is complete and utter crap.
A little birdie told me the X1's successor shall be the highlight at MWC.
i cant say i believe you but that sure would be sweet. if so, heres hoping they dont announce then delay release a year and a half later!
Deja-vu effect !
"...bring more of the same" You make it sound like it's a bad thing. I quite like SE handsets.
yeah, but they all look the same whether you like em or not.
I been using W810i and it has completed a century of 'drops' and still going strong! i will breakup with it for a C905 or C908! anyone listening?
I have just seen here is sold at 179 euros nobrand.
