Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 now shipping
At long last, Lenovo's IdeaPad Y650 is now available for shipping. For those who need a quick memory jolt, the 16-inch laptop's packing a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor and X4500 integrated graphics, 1366 x 768widescreen TFT LCD, up to 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, 320GB HDD, DVD burner, 6-cell battery, WiFi and Bluetooth. Base price is $1,300, but we suggest you shell out the extra Benjamin and upgrade to the 2.53GHz processor and NVIDIA GeForce G105M 256MB graphics card.

Now, I might just be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't cost 13,000 dollars. Way to 0, Engadget.
Precisely my thought. 13,0000?
$13000?
this isn't a mac!
It definitely looks hot, and the features look solid, I'm just concerned that something that large will weigh a ton.
Looks like it's an inch thin .. macbook pro size.
not bad.
too bad the resolution & graphic card upgrade options suck.
Weight-wise, it seems to be the same as a MacBook Pro at about 5.5lb. It's a shame that Lenovo does not seem to be publishing a proper specification on this model yet despite it being for sale in their store. Odd.
Ironically this 16" main advantage is that its actually lightweight. Other machines have better specs - a $1200 XPS Studio 16 includes the ATI 3670 512MB video card, and I'm sure HP's would have a DDR2 9600 as well. That said, when it comes down to 16"ers weight becomes a secondary priority for me, so it'd rather go for the video card or spend even more to get the SSD, Blu-ray etc on the competition.
THIRTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS?!?!?
8^O
Wow if the base price is $13000 I guess if it is beefed up to the max it would cost as much as my dad's beemer :D
I'm kidding I know it's a typo :P
Your dad rides a bike?
Aren't beemers BMWs?
WHOHOHO !!!!
They hired some designers at Lenovo !!!!!! Good news !!! They can !!
Give Engadget a break you know what they sayin yo
OH MY BABY JESUS! $13k???
Now edit it and delete all the above comments to hide the shame
Hey! Did anyone mention that it costs 13,000 dollars?
LOL
Did you notice that in the link of the image all 3 models are 'Lenvo' :)
Lenvo? So this is a KIRF.
First Dell, an now Lenovo. Finally these companies have decided (taking a cue from Apple I believe) that design matters.
Good job.
Yep... and maybe now Apple will understand price and specs matter too.
@Boards of Canada
Why? You price things at the price that enough people are willing to pay and give them a product that they are happy with at that price. Given the sales of Apple laptops these days (even in the final quarter of 2008), I think it is safe to say that Apple found their sweet-spot quite a while ago and there is no reason to change. Should sales suddenly plummet then I am sure that action will be taken.
Action will be taken we don't need the keys we'll break in.
Thirteen Thousand Dollars, eh?
You'd think it'd at least be a Thinkpad for that kind of scratch.
Wait, did anyone not notice all these people talking about the typo? Did I really need to make this comment to mention it yet again?
Seriously though, they could have chosen a different colour instead of orange for the laptop rim and they could have increased the resolution to at least 1600x900. Other than those two factors, it is rather nice.
So if you don't like the orange color take it out for a rim job, oops, I mean rim paint job
yeah seriously, the resolution. my pda has higher resolution.
It doesn't look at all like a unibody macbook what are you talking about? besides the bezel and the rounded edges and the placement and size of the trackpad and the way the camera is integrated and the color scheme, it could be a completely new product. Jesus, get off Apple's dick.
just had to stop in and make fun of the wonderful type-0. just like everyone else
X4500 integrated graphics, 1366 x 768widescreen TFT LCD for a 16" laptop.
yawn!
Why would you put such a low resolution screen in such a big laptop. With the G105M and the sleek look this lappie could have been and contender with a full HD screen.
Why in the world would by this when there's a loaded Vaio for $100 less:

I agree, although I wish the VAIO was as thin as that Lenovo and had switchable graphics and DDR3 memory.
Still, the FW series is actually pretty ugly up close and in person IMHO. Definitely a better value tho.
I actually like the Y-710 and Y-730. They have the awesome sounding subwoofer and 4 speakers, sort of like my last 2 Clevo laptops so they can definitely produce good quality full range sound and also providing very decent quality graphics for playing games and doing graphic intensive work as well
I would like this but it looks a bit too much like an apple, which is a turnoff for me.
I first chatted with Lenovo's online help and they could not direct me to any spec sheet and could not answer many of my questions about the system. They asked me to call Lenovo sales. I did that and asked the same questions and the rep told me that their intranet was running extremely slow and they were unable to access the spec data that is posted there. He told me to call back in a few days. I told him I was interested in buying one and wanted to take advantage of the 15% off that is going on right now. He said there's nothing he could do. Sound to me like they aren't ready for game time with their new release.
I've been watching the Y650 since it was originally announced. I just ordered it, I'll come back and give my review after it arrives.
