We just stopped by TechnoSource's booth at the Toy Fair to check out its just-announced
Rubik's TouchCube, a fully touch-sensitive update on the old classic Rubik's Cube. The new model boasts a few features the old one did not (besides the lights and touchscreen), namely undo and hint options if you get stumped. Each of its six sides are touch-sensitive, and the cube's got an internal accelerometer so that it only recognizes the touching going on on the top side of the cube. It also remembers your place even if you turn it off -- great for those of us who will likely spend years trying to solve it just once. The Rubik's TouchCube is going to hit shelves this fall for $149.99. Check the gallery and video demo after the break
why?
I don't think we will ever know...
$149.99...LOLZ!
what was that at the end of the video? (looked like the bottom was not lit up and he quickly hid it) lol
@onelove: I saw that, too! LOL.
i'm laughing more at the fact that the guy showing this off forgot to trim his nails that morning.
haha that was to noticeable, that was nice
$149.99??? wtf
iPhone rip off. Touch Interface.
/sarcasm.
Impractical, expensive, hardly satisfying as the original one; I think "FAIL" is the right word in this case.
Was the original one ever satisfying? And if it was, what does that say about the person who solved it?
I'm not sure what you're going for there xD
I love the rubiks cube! Of course I doubt I'll get this, but I find the original (as well as its larger counterparts) very entertaining and satisfying.
At least the old one gave your fingers, hands and forearms a bit of exercise.
As the the frustrating touch sensation was already missing from these cubes. This is rubix frustration x2 with a +100 trainer; Waste of time and money.
What? How am I supposed to pull the stickers off this one?
That's how I solved the problem.
I never understood why people tried turning the different layers. Just get a hair dryer and to loosen the stickers and move them.
There is always an easier solution!
That our 2 minor turns & pop out the parts.
(Then all the stickers don't look removed & repasted)
It was always much easier to take a screwdriver to a Rubik's cube and prize it apart... something I'd be tempted to do with this pointless version anyway.
There's a cheat code to solve the puzzle.

What's the point? Solving this Rubik's cube would take longer than a real one would. You get absolutely no benefits to using this versus the real thing. This is the worst non-solution I've ever seen.
Hear, hear! Yet another proof that just because technology allows something doesn't make it a good idea!
Wow must have a HUGE market for this
$150 ??
3 Things I'd like to see for this.
1) Hackable
2) Upgradable (More Puzzles like Lights out)
3) Price Drop
I want my optical drive back.

Or you can play it for free online
This was an idea I had for a school project titled "interactive toy". I had drawn all the gesture movements the user will have to make to interact with the rubix cube since it was going to be touch sensitive and also wrote about how each square will be built with an LED light which will in turn be linked to chip that stores and calculates switching of the coloured lights. I guess my train of thoughts just arrived a little too late.
Still am glad and sad someone had already made it before me but for $149.99?!..lolz!
I see ZERO market for this. If they were publicly traded (they're not) I'd say dump stock. Honestly, it's too much money for what's really not a very fun puzzle. The original one was at least cheap.
Or you could buy 20 sets of original cube + hint book & give them to your friends:

once somebody has figured out how to hack these (and the price comes down), I'll get one and hack into a Rubik's Hypercube.
the best part is when he says "cutting edge technology"
Now how about this: make it with an actual full touch screen instead of just OLED lights or whatever so I can use it as a bedside clock, PMP, etc... the Rubiks Cube part is actually just a game on it...
I thought this thing was cool until I saw the price. Are they serious?
If they slash the price in half I might purchase one, but at $149.99 that is way too much. Maybe if it would double as a phone. I guess if Apple would have helped develop this and put the Apple logo on it we would all be standing in line waiting to put down our $149.99 and walking away happy!
Nice...great contribution to the "green" effort by creating a digital analog to a existing device, requiring power.
I'd rather someone just make a monitor cube with six screens on a pivot so I don't have to mess with CompViz. LOL
WHAT THE HELL? No offense to Rubik's cube but why so expensive? U can get a sidekick LX 4 the $150 price. I like the old school cube better.
Wow, what a waste of time and money. Sorry, but I agree with the others above. FAIL.
No, no, no. You're doing it wrong; turn the left panel down topwise.
It's like with the split-flaps at stations and airports, which seemingly had to be replaced by silver screen-sized plasmas.
Now we have this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/Plasma_burnin_at_DFW_airport.jpg
Ain't technological advance beautiful.
had this idea for a computer mod. itd light up like that and solve itself in the background whilst you work, or do whatever it is you do on the computer. the thing would have 336 lights. think thats how many it would have. its been awhile since i calculated it but six lights for each square, and since there are 9 squares on one side with 6 sides. would take up alot of wattage though to do. probably 2 psus. its cool to see something similar to what i had in mind, and itd almost look like that as well.
cool. neat.
but garbage at the same time
this defeats the whole purpose of the the original cube
and especially to those people who learnt how to solve it
(like me) hahaha
getting it to solve itself or "undo" a mistake you made wont help u with anything.
and i could probably solve it faster than it can anyways
$149.99? no thanks
The future is here.
[/sarcasm]
Does not have the same 'magic' as the former model. Not everything needs to be digitalized Rubik!
Half of the fun for me used to be the feel of that cube twisting around. I found it very relaxing even though I never got a cube finished.
Hopefully some enterprissing nerd will hack this into a multitouch interface or even better yet port video to all the individual squares. I want but not at that price point.
But will it blend?
That price point hast to be wrong. Maybe $49
Totally agree, as we said here (http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/business/consuminginterests/blog/2009/02/rubiks_touchcube_wastes_of_mon.html)! Why did anyone think a product like this was a good idea in the current economy? Seems like the original Cube is a much better option ...
