Dell Mini 10 shows up for pre-order... from QVC?
You'd think with an in-demand new product like the Mini 10 Dell would want to snag as many pre-orders as it can for itself, but it looks like none other than QVC will be getting first dibs on the company's latest netbook, as Dell has now confirmed after the netbook made an appearance on shopping channel's website. Starting today, it'll apparently be offering one configuration of the Mini 10 for $559, which includes a 1.6GHz Z530 Atom processor, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Windows XP and, of course, that 10.1-inch SVGA display. Shortly thereafter, on February 26th, Dell will begin taking orders itself for a couple more configurations, including a base $399 model that includes a 1.3GHz Z520 Atom processor and a 3-cell battery. Dell isn't getting any more specific than "next month" with an actual shipping date, however, although those orders from QVC will supposedly be shipping out on March 20th.

Update: It looks legit! QVC gets first dibs (saywha?), with Dell.com taking orders on the 26th.

I'm disappointed to hear the pricing is the same as the Mini 12. I had hoped it would slot in-between the Mini 9 and the 12. Maybe starting at $299 and topping out at $450.
Yeah, seems a bit pricey for the screen size + spec. Don't have to pony up much more to get something slightly less portable but with a must faster proc. I'll be damned if the Mini 9 @199 wasn't tempting though..
Sweet! Can the 10 run osx?
probably not, or least not as easily as the 9, the mini 10 uses a new chipset
Since OS X isn't legal on a Windows computer probably not. But you can definitely try to duel-boot a Mini 10, that's what I did on my Sony Vaio FW. But I wouldn't recommend it because running Mac on a Windows is unfortunately dangerous(it can crash BOTH of the OS)
So its legal to have a dual boot hackintosh?
It's legal for you to put OSX on anything that you can figure out how to make it work (you won't get support if you fuck it up though). Despite what the terms of use say, as long as you paid for it you can attempt to install it on whatever. Just putting something in the terms of use does not make it legal.

when 1024x600 is considered barely usable, 1024x576 is just not.
but 1024x576 is a good indication they'll soon be offering 1366x768 at one point or another
According the dell official blog linked blow it will be offering a 720p screen eventually. I suppose thats a decent option.
I'm more disappointed at the fact that all the cool stuff (TV tuner, GPS, 720p screen) is going to be rolled out down the road - that is, it's not going to be available as an option at launch.
You can see more about the Mini 10 details on Direct2Dell: http://snurl.com/c56gx.

Can i have a free one?
Thanks for the link - I am going to have to keep a watch out for this one!
I commend Dell for ensuring that all of the interesting stuff that would really set it apart from other netbooks is coming "down the road" or on "future models". Let me guess, the eventual version with "mobile broadband" will mean you need to buy one particular model that isn't customisable, and that comes with an expensive data contract, just like with the 9 in the UK?
Chief Blogger? Kind of reminds me of Assistant to the Traveling Secretary!
hey cheif blogger, can you verify this line "and a 16:9 edge-to-edge display that supports a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768"
you sure it's not supposed to be 1366 x 768?
You cant upgrade the ram.... that's a deal breaker.
thats clearly a challenge.
is it soldered?
Read the sentence about 1GB fixed RAM from the Direct2Dell blog post again. The key word there is initially.
I'm glad I bought a HP Mini 1000 then. Got one this week, had a spare 2GB module from a deceased laptop that I popped inside the HP in no time. Voila RAM upgraded from 1GB to 2GB without any hurdles.
God i hope they didn't really put an SVGA monitor in this.
I really want to meet the person that pays $560 for a mini laptop that has extremely low specs, a cramped keyboard, a dismal display and a cheap plastic shell. I used my neice's Dell Mini the other day and it felt like I was using a computer made for toddlers.
I saw both the mini 9 and 12 at yodobashi camera the other day and was quite impress with the build quality. And its very very light. I dont know with what you compare but when compared with other netbooks, the Dell's are way better. (still I think a bit overpriced)
Yobodashi: 9 floors of sheer awesomeness in Akihabara.
It has hdmi so what is the chip set? Also 1GB of non-upgradable ram is crap. If they are going to solder it to the MB then make it 2GB. What is that like $10 more?
The price point seems a bit high to me... The Samsung NC10 is on the pricier side for netbooks, but does have the 6-cell battery and I think is worth it. $559 is ridiculous.
The chief culprit in the high price seems to be the Z530 CPU. Wikipedia lists their price at $70 vs around $40 for the N270 that's in most netbooks. Also, I think it's worth pointing out that this is priced fairly competitively with the HP Mini 1000. It's clear that both Dell and HP think that their product design (which IMO is definitely superior to most other netbooks out there right now) will command a bit of a premium.
2GB fixed will be an option later.
That's great to hear. I won't buy until that's made available. Also, I won't buy until the higher 720P screen res, WiFi-n, BT, TV tuner, GPS, WWAN, 6-cell battery, and Vista are all available options for the machine.
And crikey... that's sure a lot of features to leave out of the machine to begin with. Sounds like Dell has a lot of work to do. With all those above options currently unavailable, this thing won't be configurable in the way that many will want it until summer or autumn... or Christmas. Wake me when it's ready.
I'm glad Dell made the decision to design this netbook, though. With all those options, it'll be hard to beat, and it's a good looking machine, too.
Oh, and one other thing...
I'll be waiting for the multi-touch touchpad, too. That also will have to be there before I buy.
Is there anything else Dell is leaving out, that they announced the machine was going to offer? Including multi-touch, they're leaving out ten options, so far.
Wait a second!!! 1024x576 resolution??? This is the widescreen PAL SD resolution, not 720p HD one!!!!!
*If* this is indeed true, I hope someone sues DELL for lying about their "720p screen".
What kind of a weirdo hopes that a company is sued over their laptop screen resolution - one that is now clearly outlined before purchase?
Fucking relax.
The 720P screen will be available later. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post for more information: http://snurl.com/c56gx.
Someone with a huge nose and a smile that'll make your eyes sting.
If you read the blog, max resolution is 1024x768; which does qualify as 720p. Default resolution is 1024x576. Most 720p TVs however usually run the resolution 1366x768.
No, 1024x600 is NOT 720p, it does NOT qualify as 720p. You need a *minimum* of 1280x720 to call it 720p.
where did you get 1024x600 from? crazy lady
Will a version be offered with Ubuntu and if so will they have solved the chipset's graphics issues?
Ok guess I should read more carefully rather than skim. I'm still curious about the status of the video drivers for linux though.... anyone know?
It has the Z530 Atom, does it have the GN40 chipset?
No, it has the Poulsbo chipset.
(When it is an option) Can you get the Ubuntu OS bc its cheaper and then install XP on it yourself?
Ofcourse not that would be illegal... and there isn't a dvd drive so it's completely impossible...
:)
Ever heard of external optical drive?
I wish that companies would start putting as much effort into "nettops" as they do netbooks. I've been dying to stick a cheap, decent HTPC into my living room, as a typical slimline desktop is overkill in terms of both size and cost. A computer that can fit into the palm of my hand while still being able to output 1080p via HDMI would sell like hotcakes!

Yes!!! I can pick up one of those grandma sweaters and a telescoping ladder along with the Dell Mini 10 order!
Haha, QVC.
That looks like Vista or maybe Win 7 to me
The video also mentions that the gesture trackpad will be offered later. Is that also true, Lionel?
No TV Tuner yet? No Multitouch? Just 1 GB RAM? All The things I've waited for :-(... this is sad. I was so happy as I first heared of the mini 10. I was plannig to buy one. But only If I can add on and choose Tv-Tuner, GPR, and Mobile Broadband.
I have seen the Lenovo S10 and the Dell mini and HP units and the Lenovo smokes them all..
$549 is a lot for something like that.; IT basically comes down to size vs performance. Do you want a 15 inch with a core 2 duo processor or a 10 inch with an atom processor.
I want a 10 inch netbook with a Core 2 Duo and a 15 inch laptop with an Atom ... call me crazy but. THAT'S HOW WE DO IT HERE!
I was really looking forward to this Mini... HD screen, HDMI, TV Tuner, etc. Then they go and blow it with 1 GB of non-upgradable ram, I don't care if it's initially or not. For the price they've got on it there's no reason for that... I could upgrade the ram on my first pc 20 years ago! Just because it's a Dell doesn't justify the high price tag either. In order to get one with 2GB of ram, the HD screen, TV Tuner and a 6 cell battery it'll probably be close to $550 or $600... way to much for a netbook.
I have an acer aspire one that I just bought, 1.6Ghz Atom, 1GB ram, 10inch screen, 160GB hd, xp and a 6-cell battery for $350. Why would I buy a lesser dell for more money?
You and me both... I don't understand Dell's reasoning at all. And not to even mention that new buyers are being stuck with non-upgradeable 1GB of memory; what is with this?
WEEEE
WANT. Of course, with the high resolution screen and after the awesome OSx86 community gets Mac OS X on there.
Wow, talk about a lot of $ for not a lot of netbook. Over $500 for the initial netbook with a 3-cell battery? Talk about poor battery life, Dell is still pricing themselves out of the market here. Glad I ended up jumping on the Asus 1000HE, much better bang for the buck especially when you consider this travesty from Dell. Too bad it'll take weeks to get here. :(
Where's the middle range pricing here between the Dell Mini 9 and Mini 12? A starting price of $399? Wow.... just wow. They really, really need to look at their competitors and start adjusting their pricing scheme.
What a POS for $559.
The only reason why I'm interested in the Mini 10 is the 1366x768 resolution.
I'm assuming when its available, the price will be more than $559.
Thtas absurd pricing.
A comparable spec netbook is ~$400 these days.
Add in the higher resolution, it should be $450, $500 max.
Anything more than $500 for a netbook just absurd.
"A comparable spec netbook is ~$400 these days."
And those laptops usually have a crappy design. There's more to laptops than mere specs. Only a drooling idiot stares at specs alone, while disregarding other qualities of the system.
That said, I'm quite disappointed that no-one has come up with a perfect netbook yet. Dell Mini 10 looked like to be it, but the lack of expandable RAM is a bummer. How about the HD? Can the HD be replaced?
Why is it that when it comes to netbooks it's next to impossible to find a system that is
a) replaceable RAM and HD
b) has good battery-life
c) has good keyboard
It seems you can choose two of those, not three.
I know they wont be offering a Ubuntu version just yet, but if i recall correctly, Linux doesnt have any support for hardware aceleration for videos so it wont be possible to run any 720p videos I suposse (unless I'm mistaken and the atom Z530 can do the heavy lifting) much less 1080p, right??
Also, I read someone here saying that this had Poulsbo on wich only supports PATA and 1Gb RAM, is this right???
You guys are lame.
MSI Wind with bios 109 overclocks to 1.99GHZ. Im sure it will smoke this new ATOM. Also 2gb of ram upgrade for $12.00. Plus a OSX_MSI torrent on piratebay makes installing OSX easy as pie. I got a dual boot, 2gb OSX 10" netbook at almost 2GHz for under $400.
