Dell's Studio 15 line getting ATI graphics boost?
It's not too often that a new product is leaked via its own support site -- in fact most companies can't even get drivers up ahead of release -- but if an update to Dell's download database is correct the Studio 15 is about to receive an update in the graphics department. A new model called the Studio 1555 was added yesterday to the Dell download site and included there is a driver for ATI's Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU. The Studio 15's current Intel 4500MHD is also listed, meaning the faster 4570 will likely be an option, and a desirable one at that. No further information about this update or new model is available, but if you were looking for a new Studio you might just want to hold off until we can figure out what's up. If, on the other hand, you were looking for a new studio apartment then go for it -- we've heard that now is an excellent time to buy.

Anyone know the specs on this vs. the 9400M off hand?
Rob @ Feb 18th 2009 9:54AM
This will be considerably faster. The 9400M is maybe a touch faster than the current 3470 (GDDR3 version).
Aditya Chopra @ Feb 18th 2009 9:32AM
While you are at it, how about putting an optional Radeon on the Studio Hybrid?
WilfordBrimley @ Feb 18th 2009 9:39AM
Damn, I just bought a Studio 1527 with Mobility Radeon HD 3450 a few months ago.
tvtodd @ Feb 18th 2009 10:57AM
I just bought a Studio 1737 with 3650 too. Went to the ATI site and there seems to be VERY little difference between 3650 and 4570 except for DVD upscaling and PIP. Go compare specs side-side, and the 3650 seems to actually have a few more advanced features. Anybody know more?

I bought a Studio 15, with Intel GMA X3100, so HA!
mkim @ Feb 18th 2009 9:46AM
I could've sworn my girlfriend got a studio 15 with an nvidia 9400m (256MB of RAM). I'm not sure about which chipset, but she definitely has a discrete graphics card.
Rob @ Feb 18th 2009 9:55AM
I'm almost positive the only discrete option was the 8400M with 128 MB.

Man, it's good to read a post that's NOT mwc... I'm so sick of it, and the mwc free rss has about 3 posts a day, vs 7 billion for mwc. (I may be exaggerating. But not by much.) I get it. It's important. And you guys are doing a helluva job covering it.. But there's no good comments. You guys should throw in the random inflammatory iPhone article.. Something like
"iPhone PWNs MWC from half a globe away, engadget readers get in 10 page virtual catfight"
Just sayin.

Would be nice if the Studio XPS 16 gets updated with the 4670.. the 3670 is a tad too slow IMHO..
Karthik Ramgopal @ Feb 18th 2009 9:13PM
Both the 4570 and the 3650 are RV630 (M86) based cards.. I guess ATI is just upto rebranding capitalizing on the HD4000 series name like Nvidia has been doing for quite some time..
NinjaXero @ Feb 19th 2009 9:48AM
They just changed the cpu option also from the P8400 2.26ghz to the P8600 2.4ghz for the same price WHILE it was being shipped to me.
