ASUS begins shipping ultra-longevous Eee PC 1000HE
ASUS' Eee PC 1000HE, which managed to garner some pretty high praise amongst reviewers, is now shipping out to eager buyers. For those that missed it, this here netbook sports a 1.66GHz Atom N280 and a high-capacity battery that could last up to 9.5 hours under perfectly ideal conditions. And for under $400, how in the world can you complain with that? If you too have received your tracking number, feel free to gloat about it in comments below. Might want to hold the actual digits close to your chest, though -- we hear netbook interceptions are on the rise.

just got my confirmation a few hours ago, looking forward to late nights browsing at diners without any fear of my battery dying.
I just got mine yesterday, it's the last one from Centural Computers here in San Francisco. They told me they'll have more 1000HE next week. Previously I've owned a 15" Sony VGN-N320E, and this is my first netbook so I don't know how it compares to other netbooks but here my impression of it in the last 24 hours.
Pro:
* Beautiful screen - good shapness, contrast, color, and brightness.
* Much faster than expected - I can run eMule and Yahoo Messenger in the background and watch HD streaming TV program from Fox's website. Who says netbooks can only run one application at a time?
* Great for Skype - I use this program a lot, and the speakers/mic on 1000HE are very good.
* Only a few trial/junk softwares that need to be removed, unlike my previous Sony.
Con:
* Fan noise range from virtually silent to fairly noticeable depending on the work load, but then it's kind of expected from such a compact case. In comparison, my previous 15" Sony is consistently low on noise regardless of the work load.
* Fingerprint magnet - This again is no surprise since mine comes in high gloss black.
Frankly my expectation was really low when I shopped for netbooks for the first time, but after I fine tune (according to BlackViper and my own experience) the 1000HE, I think this netbook is a terrific bargain. By the way, I've already upgraded mine to 2GB of RAM, after you physically inserted the RAM you need to retart, press F2 then F10 in order for the 1000HE to recognize it.
Hope this helps.
Oh, a netbook that you can watch a movie then do some browsing, check your e-mail, listen to some music, play a game or two..
Yes, I really love this netbook!! Look VDOs in this link. Many people also love this one.

Wow. I still have my 1000H. This is a nice upgrade but I'll wait for the larger screen models and the better design. This is a minimal upgrade for me. I also personally like the keyboard on the 1000H because the buttons are larger and thus there is less wasted real estate IMHO!
The EEE PC is still the best netbook to get. I can't wait to see the Nvidia Ion platform in one of these netbooks. That will be worth the upgrade.
By larger screen, I mean like 11" or better resolution like the HP Mini-Note.
Over 10" isn't really a netbook any more IMO. Remember the first one was 7" - we're pushing double that now.
Netbooks are starting to loose what made them special in the first place: Low Price (
Really cool gadget, if it only had integrated 3G...
The 901GO and the 1000GO both of have integrated 3G. I imagine putting 3G in this model as a mod or whatever wouldn't be that difficult at all. Maybe JKK will do something ...
The funny thing is that the 1000H has a spot on the motherboard next to the HDD where another Mini-PCI card slot should be but ASUS didn't include. The funny thing is the slot is called 3GCARD.
I would have to agree with you, JAmerican.
I have an EEE PC 900 and they are the best on the market. If they could make the 1000 with the extended life and a solid state drive, though, I would jump on that (or better yet, a 900 series). The only thing I don't like about the 901 and the 1000 series is the case. The simple and matte finish on my 900 is the sexiest of them all.
Things just keep getting better and better.
When tablet netbooks!?
WHEN!!!!
Here here body... I'm waiting with baited breath myself for a tiny tablet..
Where where?
Provide link please.
this laptop is just damn good !
here's a video of 1000he ram upgrade -
http://www.techreviews4u.com/2009/02/20/asus-eee-pc-1000he-hands-on/
soo good you have to upgrade it ;-P but yeah I get your point netbooks are cool
I love videos like this. This is my kind of reality TV.
I wish, however, that they could find a friend to hold a camera. It can't be that hard... "Hey Jim, point the camera at the computer." Geeks have friends, right?
waiting for the netbooks with nvidia chipset. but as long as it can run starcraft with no hitch, I'm game~
I already runs starcraft without a hitch
any computer can run starcraft, I bet even most smartphones have the processing power to do it.
I just don't get this netbook craze. Inexpensive full blown laptops cost $400-500. Buying a $400 netbook to get 3/4 the performance, capacities, and features seems strange. This is almost like the Nintendo DSlite craze. And now the netbook thingy has caught the wife's attention--just like the DSlite.
What's not to get? It's super-portable (EASILY fits in your bookbag if you're a student), light, and has 9.5 hours (ok, realistically probably more like 7.5) of battery life, and it's cheap. And the screen looks about 9000x better than any screen you'll find on a $400 full-size laptop-it's LED backlit and looks fantastic.
I've bought everything from a 17" desktop replacement laptop (for my brother, who then proceeded to whine nonstop about lugging it to the library it until I helped him buy a replacement 13" Vaio SR), a 15.4" widescreen standard laptop, a 14" widescreen laptop, and the 1000H.
By FAR I like the 1000H the most for actually taking it with me. Even the 14" laptop only got brought to school/library maybe once a week, because by the time I had put it in it's protective sleeve and brought along the charger my bookbag either weighed twice as much or was now packed so full it would barely close because you're then trying to shove a laptop into a space filled with textbooks.
Every single person in my medical school class who's bought one loves their netbook (happy to say that I was the first person-and literally had almost everyone who saw me using ask me all about it-and I'd say 25% of those people ended up buying one).
If you don't need to actually bring your laptop places then the netbook isn't for you, but for people who need to bring it everywhere and use it for hours at a time for academic (or surfing) type stuff I'd say it's like the difference between going from bringing a CD wallet full of mix CDs you burned and a CD player with you to the library and bringing an ipod. The change in convenience is seriously that much.
Also, the super small footprint is a huge bonus when you're trying to put your laptop on one of those flip-over style lecture hall writing areas. When there's extra space you can put your notes on one and your netbook perfectly on the other without worrying about your 15.4" laptop teetering and falling down or whatever. Heck, there's even extra space left to put your coffee somewhere.
Honestly the battery life and the size put together with useful levels of processing power makes it exactly what millions and millions of people have wanted for years. The fact that they also start in the $200's just means those people can actually go and buy it to rave.
Inexpensive full blow laptops don't have the battery life these do. I got a 14" Acer for $400 that barely lasts over 2 hours. For 25 dollars less, I ordered the 1000HE and got something that will last 3-5 times as long. Sure, my Acer beats it in performance, for about 2 hours...
It really depends on what you plan to do with the device.
If you plan to work for several hours at a time on a computer, getting a 14-15" notebook seems more appropriate. If you take the bus/plane several times a month, these devices are a wonder to carry on with you.
I won't try to convince you that a netbook is an overall better choice than a normal notebook because I don't know what kind of usage you do on your current computer. Just get what you feel is better for you.
Repeat after me:
It's the size and the battery life.
It's the size and the battery life.
It's the size and the battery life.
People buying this don't use it as a gaming rig. With the larger keyboard on this model, you can bring it to your office or classroom and be productive, writing Word and Excel documents. It's a bare bones laptop, that's super-portable, LIGHT, cheap, and you almost never need to bring a charger.
A netbook like this is a supplement to other computers you might have. If your only computer is gonna be a laptop... you're better off with a 15" or 17".
If you just want a small computer to use when you travel or take notes in class... in addition to having a real laptop or desktop... netbooks are perfect. I know people who bought a netbook just to dump photos off their memory card when they travel... and light web browsing in the hotel.
Netbooks were a hot seller this Christmas. Do you really think people buy netbooks to be their primary machine?
This will be my college computer.
As I said I have the 1000H and it works wonders for me. It is easy on the back with all those heavy books too :). What I can't understand is why they blocked out the WiFi Mini-PCI slot. Oh well, keeping my 1000H :)
I would get yourself a desktop too. Netbooks are not meant to be your primary computer. I use my EEE 701 for class and a desktop for all other work, it works out great.
muahahahah muahhahaha
I got my tracking number yesterday. Can't wait to get this up and running with my 2gb ram upgrade and windows 7 install. whoo!!!!
Exactly what mine's getting - waiting on Amazon.......
Next paycheck, I'm ordering one of these to replace my aging Powerbook. I had one of the 900 models running Linux, but the distro was so locked down it was useless to me. I'm not a fan of WinXP, but at least I can install my own software this way.
And that blue is very pretty. :D
My powerbook is crapping out as we speak, I ordered the 1000HE to replace it, have the 2GB memory chip and OSx86 install waiting for the day it arrives in the mail. Of course, the day they actually upgrade the graphics chip to the GD40 or an NVidia (not gonna happen) then I'll instantly sell the 1000HE and jump on whatever is next.
The one I got for my girlfriend shipped yesterday. She loves them because she can just fit it in her bag she takes to work. its the perfect size for her.
Nothing beats the MSI Wind, but damn I really wish Apple could get their head out and release a macbook mini, I hate the hassle of doing things the osx86 way... but if that is what it takes.
seriously, I looked at the Eee Pc at best buy a while back and my thoughts rendered it a POS, for reals!!! MSI RULES!!!
Nice.....
this would be an upgrade from my 2G Surf
I'm working on my Asus Eee 1000h right now. It came with Windows XP which I dropped in favor of Ubuntu Linux 8.10 and XP Pro. What's funny is I haven't rebooted into XP since I set it up. I love being able to take it with me with ease and manage my website while out and about. I have all the code for it so I could make changes to my site if I hear about an error or just manage customer emails. For $325 you really can't beat it.
I ordered this from JR, although like many others on the facebook group and others still haven't received a tracking number. From reports that I've been hearing, I don't think it will be shipped out until March. Like others have said, you can get a sub-par notebook for maybe around this price - the the battery live would be 1/3rd of a typical netbook.
I still might cancel my order, but for $364 and 7% off with no shipping, it is a terrific deal on what appears to be a fantastic netbook.
I ordered from J&R as well. From what I've heard, the blue ones have not arrived yet. You can still put in the preorder for it at $364.99 at the J&R website if you want to pick it up:
http://todaysepicdeal.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/asus-eee-pc-1000he-10-netbook-36499/
I preordered the first day available from Amazon and still no estimated ship date (for the blue). =(
that's awful, I'm sorry.
Thanks, I'm trying to be optimistic.
Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date.
Shipment #1: Shipping Soon We are preparing these items for shipment and this portion of your order cannot be canceled or changed.
I contacted them and apparently it will ship in a few days. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but their customer service was good.
ZipZoomFly has been shipping the black version for about a week. Got mine a few days ago, and it's fantastic. The battery life is no joke.
Anyone else notice that the company is marketing this to businessMEN?
"ASUS' new Eee PC 1000HE, previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, has set a new high mark for netbooks. Delivering up to an incredible 9.5 hours of battery life, the 1000HE, users now have unplugged access to their digital world all day. For frequent travelers, businessmen, and others who are constantly on the go, there can be no substitute."

No one cares woman.
Does this version have the GN40 chipset?
