Inspiron Mini 10 finally shows up at Dell's website
In one of the most bizarre sequences of events we can recall, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 has finally arrived on its maker's website. And this is after being briefly (and we stress "briefly") unveiled in a 3- x 3-foot cubical at CES, being impersonated at Tecso by the smaller Mini 9 and showing up early on QVC. Yeah, weird. At any rate, we knew that the Round Rock powerhouse was looking to offer this pup up for sale starting on the 26th, so we figure now is a perfect time to host up a holding place in order to get people informed. As we'd heard, it'll sport a 10.1-inch display, 802.11b/g WiFi, optional Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI out, an external DVD drive, upwards of 160GB of HDD space, 1GB of RAM, a keyboard that's 92 percent the size of a standard laptop (that's the same as on ASUS' Eee PC 1000HE, by the way), a multitouch trackpad, 720p media playback, optional WWAN, an internal TV tuner and your choice of a 3-cell (3 hours) or 6-cell (6.5 hours) battery. Yummy!

Alright, who wants to find out if OS X runs on this as slick as it does on the 9?
What for? Win7 is all we need! :)
Not gonna work anytime soon with that chipset =(
whats the chipset? will work on eeepc 1000he? @_@
@Ike
Serato Scratch. I'm no Mac fanboy, but the requirements are lower on a Mac than on a PC. Plus, it's better than dragging an oafy lappie about to the club.
All we'd need is a screen res hack.
its not available cause I cant find a price or buy link???????
@Icchansan The Mini 10 uses the intel GMA500 chipset utilizing a PowerVR SGX core. Intel doesn't even make the drivers for the GPU. As far as I know, OS X doesn't support this; even the official Linux drivers are a POS. Some creative hacker may be able to get it working eventually but the GMA 500 isn't really ubiquitous so I doubt this will ever be a high priority.
the mini9 wont run OSX anymore either btw. Dell is starting the ship the new atom processors in the new mini9s. so more hackintoshes for awhile =[
Hopefully the higher-res screen version wasn't just a rumor. Cause those 1024x576 or 600 screens really are the most limiting factor of these devices I'd say from my Eeeexperience...
The following Inspiron Mini 10 features will be available at a later date:
* HD capabilities – Enjoy your favorite movies on the optional 720p Hi-def 10.1¨ seamless display.
Ah thanks! Note to self: read websites before complaining :D
Multi-touch trackpad! Also, where are the trackpad buttons?
It's set up similar to the new Macbooks. The lower left and lower right corner of the track pad can be pressed to produce a left-click or right-click (respectively).
Dell site down for anyone else?
Has Dell decided to go the way Apple has with the newer Macbooks? From the pictures, I don't see any trackpad buttons.
Too bad the features that set this apart and made me want one aren't available yet.
GPS
TV tuner
Doesn't seem to make sense to promote those things so much, even make them seem standard, and then not have them at launch.
Yeah, its also missing George Foreman grill option too. How much do you really want in a Netbook?!
I think the biggest *reasonable* thing its missing is 802.11n. b sucks bad and g is getting there soon, need n!!
@BigReg
On Dell Site I see this on the specs sheet:
Wi-Fi:
WiFi802.11g or a/g/n Mini Cards
Sorry if this has been mentioned further down :p
Interesting trackpad. I'd like to see some more details on how it functions; i.e. if it's a complete clone of the MacBook one or if it's slightly different in some way.
Not liking the 3-cell battery, but at least there'll be a 6-cell version available.
HDMI for the win.

Glossy 10.1 inch LED display (1024x576) WSVGA
NO WAY!
what's the point advertising 720p media playback? atom N270 on other netbooks can do that already.
If you read further down:
Coming Soon
The following Inspiron Mini 10 features will be available at a later date:
* HD capabilities – Enjoy your favorite movies on the optional 720p Hi-def 10.1¨ seamless display.
yeah it's a bit off from the normal 1024x600
hdmi keyboard and trackpad looks nice
dunno about the atom z-series processors tho.... probably gonna be underpowered like the 12 "
+1. I mean, it's only 24 pixels difference in height, but jesus why are we going DOWN when the screen res is already neutered enough to not run certain apps? Where's the 1280x800 love??
death to VGA port! i whole heartedly welcome HDMI! horay!
I was excited for the Dell 10 but there isn't much here ... and what there is, isn't much.
It uses the GMA 500 chipset. Not too big of a deal, but it lists 2 gigs as a future option. I guess they're sticking with the soldered onboard ram.
Anything interesting about it is "Coming Soon". The 720p screen, gps, and tv tuner. Without those, it's just a regular 10" (and albeit, overpriced IMO) netbook.
The only thing I really like about it is that they removed the VGA port that so many other manufactures love to keep. Good riddance.
How can something be overpriced if there's no prices listed for it yet?
Umm.. I was sure that it was stated elsewhere that Dell's base price on this is 399$ The QVC model is 559$ (which I'm going to say has the QVC markup) and pretty bare without any options.
It's got a multitouch trackpad with no buttons. People, this is what an Apple netbook would be like.
Oh yeah, I called it a netbook, SUCK IT PSION.
I think they did this to preempt a apple netbook :)
To pre-empt an Apple netbook, all they would have had to do is price it below 1000 dollars US.
Here is a little bit of an explanation on the multi-touch.
http://techorigins.com/the-inspiron-mini-10-makes-its-way-to-dells-website/
That doesn't explain anything about the multi-touch. Just a shameless plug, don't bother clicking.
I was planning to buy one Dell mini 10. Bus only they offer GPS, WWAN and build in TV Tuner, Also the non upgradeable RAM makes me sad and right now I'm looking for some other netbooks. Without these features the price is deffenetly to high for that. I really like DELL, and I need a netbook. I was waiting for the mini 10 for months... sad sad sad
You did see that a future version will have 2GB of RAM? Not necessarily upgradable though, so just wait a little longer...
"...unveiled in a 3- x 3-foot cubical at CES..."
What the hell is a cubical?
It's like a sphircle but square.
Only available on the US site right now as far as I can tell. Went to my locale and it still only shows the Mini 9 and 12.
I'm not too fond of the fact that it is using the GMA 500, while on a better chipset overall power consumption wise, I wish the drivers for GMA 500 would have been more mature. It definitely supports Aero on paper, so I don't see what it is such a big deal not to support 2GB memory and bundle Vista Home Premium. Although the future is definitely 7.
I wish they came out with the 720p display right away instead of having two versions of the 10 floating around. I can't wait for a 16:9 720p screen on a form factor like the 10.
Not so big on the touchpad. I hope those corner clicks respond well. Multi-touch is nice but if they were to emulate Apple, they should have gone all out and gotten the click under the entire pad, as opposed to just the corners.
The 1GB ram limitation is due to the current version of the chipset. It cannot use more than 1GB of ram even if there is a free ram slot. I have read that the chipset has recently been recoded to allow more than 1GB of ram but that has not yet been released to the market. This is probably the reason that 2GB ram is also "coming soon."
I only see Windows XP listed. Will Ubuntu not be available on these mini's? That sucks.
For Ubuntu, I think linux support is still iffy for the GMA500 (or it was when I checked a few weeks ago)
Not worth considering until the higher res screen is out. 1024x576 blows chunks. Folks need to buy glasses or start eating their carrots.
...why can't they put HDMI on the Mini 12?
The following Inspiron Mini 10 features will be available at a later date:
* HD capabilities – Enjoy your favorite movies on the optional 720p Hi-def 10.1¨ seamless display.
* More Storage – Do even more with optional 2GB memory and optional 250GB2 hard drive.
* Navigation – Know your way like the back of your hand using the optional GPS with optional internal WWAN support.
* Design Studio – Personalize your Mini 10 with cool designs from the artist, Tristen Eaton, in Dell’s Design Studio.
* Long battery life – No need to sacrifice weight for battery life. The Inspiron Mini 10 provides extended battery life while keeping the weight of the system under 3 pounds. 3-cell: approx. 3 hours. 6-cell: approx. 6.5 hours.
* The New TV – Watch your favorite TV shows with the internal digital TV tuner.
So I dont get it right away, but Ill get it later? No thanks.
It has a real HDD, not SSD.
Does anyone know if it has internal fans too?
Moving parts = no sale
There are netbooks which don't have internal fans? I thought the Intel chips (not just the CPU, the other bits too) used too much power for a fanless design in a very small case; power usage would also be why the battery lasts about eighteen seconds in this thing. (Dell's solution: get a bigger, heavier battery. Well, okay, better to have that option than not. But we really need lower-power CPUs and chipsets...)
Could be wrong though as I don't actually own a netbook yet. Fanless/solid-state would definitely be on my requirements list too, but I'm not planning to get one in a hurry, so...

Wait for it to come out with 7. That is when they will offer it with the other goodies.
Once the "coming soon" features are available, Nvidia's ION or something similar from Intel & Win 7 is released, this will definitely be a netbook to consider. Until then, it's just ok like all of the others.
Did anyone bother to read the tech specs?
Glossy 10.1 inch LED display (1024x576) WSVGA
I really wonder how they are going to do 720p on a screen that's only 576 pixels high?
There will be a different higher rez screen available.
The following Inspiron Mini 10 features will be available at a later date:
* HD capabilities – Enjoy your favorite movies on the optional 720p Hi-def 10.1¨ seamless display.
