Dell now taking Mini 10 orders, sort of

Dell may not be taking orders for the new Mini 10 on its website until February 26th, but it looks like those not willing to go the QVC route can now at least get an order in over the phone, with a few significant limitations. According to one MyDellMini forum user that opted for that route, Dell is only offering one configuration for $449, which doesn't include GPS or that promised built-in TV tuner, and is available in black only. Otherwise, you'll apparently get the standard 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and, of course, that 10.1-inch 1024x576 display. Then again, February 26th is just a couple of days away, and with a stated ship date of March 31st, there's no indication that these phone orders will actually be landing in your hands any sooner.

Update: We're not quite sure what's going at Dell, but the Mini 10 is now up on its website and available to order, two days ahead of schedule. There's still no configuration or color options, however, and that $449 price has now magically become $474 for what appears to be the exact same system, so you may just want to wait until things shake out once and for all before taking the plunge.

Hopefully we get more info on the upcoming upgrades- soon!

The Mini 10 launch has been terrible.
I've gone from:
"I want to go to there!" ready with CC in hand looking for a placer to order one
to;
"Meh, I'll wait and see that Asus tablet netbook first".
Way to go Dell.
I completely agree. I've been looking to buy a netbook, and this was at the top of my list when they announced it. Between the high price tag, non-upgradeable RAM, and low res screen though it's slipped down my list with just about every announcement Dell has made since then.
I Love Microsoft. But now I just can't see why anyone would not wait for:
1. Linux flavour
2. 6 Cell
3. HD screen
4. Lower priced SSD
5. Hands on review
6. July 2nd.
or Buy a reduced price 8.9 Asus NOW and then wait for the dust to settle... then buy in the Fall when all the manufacturers have got their shit together.
Did anyone notice how the "Dell" logo looks like a car companies emblem from this angle?
I wonder if the red one goes faster....
Ew, they took 24px of that 1024x600 usual display for 10inchers.No thanks.
I would wait for the 720p screen upgrade, not interested in the current 576p screen (even the typical 1024x600 resolution doesn't fit many apps, let alone 576 pixels height). But regardless of the screen, the 1 GB RAM limitation completely kills the deal for me. I am not waiting to see the specs of the Lenovo S20. If most new netbooks have this artificial 1 GB RAM limitation (some say that Intel pushes for the limit in order to not eat away the rest of their products), then I will just buy a Macbook and be done with this search of many months on my side to find something that's acceptable (I basically need a good 10.5"-12" 720p HDD-based netbook -- my flash-based Acer Aspire One doesn't cut it anymore).
1GB RAM???
I'll Pass.
I would to see how the mini10 runs os x - only because the mini9 does so well.
:)
There is a HDMI port on the one in the picture.
sweet. i'll take the model with more than 1GB ram...
Whatever for?
I mean, you could probably swap it out, but I don't own or administrate a single machine with more than 1 GB RAM. If I've got extra money to blow on a machine, I toss in bluetooth or fancy peripherals..
Then your option is only the Mini 9.
@ethana2: Erm...yeah, welcome to 2005. Come join us in the land of more than 1GB.
i was being sarcastic. you can only get it with 1gb ram.
>Whatever for?
If you install all the latest XP updates, and use its email client and indexing service, you need more than 1 GB of RAM. Plus, Vista requires over 1 GB of RAM for best results -- from the get go. I installed the latest Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One and I am never going Linux again for my netbooks. I use Linux for 10 years now, but I had so much trouble with wifi and flash performance while traveling to Europe, that I don't want it anymore. So exactly because I am going Windows for my next netbook, I need over 1 GB of RAM.
So I would appreciate it if you stop downplaying our needs.
no you don't.
i have the mini inspiron 9, and if the 10 is just like that, but with a bigger keyboard, i would be delighted
Who cares about this stupid thing. Its just a gimmick anyway. If your going to spend money on a computer why don't you save up and buy something that's not going to get thrown against a wall the first week.
I don't even know what this comment means and I speak english natively.
install OSX, then we're talking
Give it a couple weeks.. the OSX86 community is fairly diligent about these things. Pointless to debate the OS, when one has the power of choice with all 3 major players.
I commented on the last update but in case someone missed it the Mini 10 is available from AAFES (Military PX) through a direct portal to Dell for $399.00 shipped. You can pick almost any color and any combination of wireless and WANN. Two versions 1.3 and 1.6ghz. 1gb max RAM. Estimated ship date 21 Mar 09.
I would have ordered today, but:
1024x576
1GB not upgradeable
You lost the sale, Dell.
