Dell Studio 15 with HD screen and Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics lands in Singapore
We first caught wind of an updated Dell Studio 15 when drivers for a 1555 model with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics popped up on Dell's support site, and surprise -- Dell Singapore's gone and posted specs and pricing. The 1555 gets more than just a GPU boost to a 512MB 4570, it's also scoring a new 15.6-inch WLED 1366 x 768 screen, so you can actually watch some of that high-def media at an appropriate res. The basic config nets you all the new stuff plus a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo, 3GB of RAM and a 250GB drive for S$1,599 ($1,044), which is actually a pretty stellar deal -- let's hope this bad boy makes it Stateside, and soon.
[Thanks, Karthik]

I could actually watch my high-def media on my 1280x800 15.4" display too!
nice avatar! I miss my old t-shirt
Just checked the Indian Site as well, the 512 MB ATi 4570 option is available through the customize page. The link shows the screen as WXGA but when you go into customize the WLED option show up

What's engadget's definition of widescreen if 1366 x 768 already is?
This must be a typo. 1366 x 768 is pretty standard fare, especially in a 15 incher.
I see now, there's an option for 1920 x 1200. THAT is HD. The 1366 x 768 is the base option, and there's a third option that's somewhere in between those two resolutions.
Where is 1920x1200?
you guys don't get the whole HD buzz, now instead of the standard 1280x800 (8:5), they've gone to the slightly wider 1366x768 (16:9) which also happens to be the standard resolution for all 720P LCDTVs
what I don't get is the whole point of touch sensitive media buttons, who ever started the trend should have awkward things happen to them
I hate touch sensitive buttons. Especially volume buttons. If you're in public, and you start playing a video... it takes like 10 seconds to turn it down. You push it, you don't know if the volume is going down. You keep pushing it, people are looking at you...
Give me a volume wheel like the Toshiba used to have.
You know it works because they work. On my M1330 each hit of the button is two points on the volume slider up or down. The key also glows a brief blue to confirm your hit, the volume is also changing of course. But beside that fact; you should be considerate of those around. The only appropriate speaker volume in public is mute. Use ear buds, IEMs, or headphones. The people around will thank you and you won't look like an asshole. There is a mute key for this specific purpose if you can't handle the very difficult task of purposely muting your laptop if you might be going into public with it.
I have a Studio 15 and am generally very satisfied, but man oh man do I hate the touch-sensitive media/volume keys. Also the ATI drivers get updated once in a blue moon.
you do know that if you hold down the touch sensitive volume control, it will shorten your 10 seconds to 2
This one has been on the Australian site for near on a week now. It's still under the normal Studio 15 section, but it's the last tier...
Yep, I was about to say the same thing... but we don't have the option for a higher-res screen, unfortunately.
I like the power touch button on my Dell 30inch monitor... if its the same its cool! (but I admit for volume it must be akward)
Seriously this laptop is a steal. And its a looker too.
Wish I had that videocard in my laptop... im stuck with a old 6600GT.
Also the Dell studio know when you are not using much power and swith to the integrated card for save electricity.
Surprisingly the Dell India site even has an option to choose between 256MB and 512 MB variants of the 4750 .. nebody know if they are using GDDR2/GDDR3?
The mouse pad on Dell's notebooks is NOT sexy at all. Even MSI Wind laptops have an attractive mouse pad. I don't understand why it is so hard for Dell to implement an edgier design. I think Dell produces well built, good machines, but the design is rather uninspiring.
I meant touch-pad.
I'll stick with my unsexy, utilitarian touchpad, thankyou very much.
1366x768??? That's only 1 Megapixel
Even my notebook screen has 1280x800 also 1Mpix at 13.3"
Bit slow on the news, I got a quote for one last Thursday my time, Wednesday yours; Dell Australia.
What's with all things Dell going to Singapore?
Man.. slap the 19x12 display on that mother and it's complete fapfapfap.
1366x768 is a lousy res for a 15".
Just taken a look at the Dell Australia website, and it looks like this new model is already available to buy.

It's nice to get something in Australia before other people :D
Hmm, it appears that the only screen option on that particular model is the 720p 1366 X 768 WLED screen. Oh well, the graphics card is what I'm worried about. That and the sub-2000 dollar pricetag.
I have a Dell Studio 1735 & 1737 and the speakers are the worst I have ever heard.
You can download the 1555 manual from the support area. The ports have changed around a bit, and the keyboard area has changed, it doesn't appear it they use touch sensitive buttons anymore for media controls which were cool, but would constantly get stuck on an have to be discharged. The new model has different speakers and a subwoofer, the old studio speakers were horrible, my cell phone had better sound. Dell usually comes out with the higher resolution screens later, there are rumors it will have edge-to-edge glass.
Wow, way to go iPhone for not posting yet another comment. Thanks. Let's try again, this time on a PC, where I can copy & paste a link.
I need some advice. I've been looking at the Asus G50, the one recently reported on here at good ol' Engadget, for $950 at Best Buy. 3 or 4 gigs of RAM, nVidia 9600M GS 512mb. Now this comes along at around a hundred bucks more, and I think I may get a discount on Dell machines through my union. I don't know what the discount is exactly, but if it's 10% or more, it's already about the same price or better than the Asus. What should I do??!?!??!
Also, anybody know about Dell's warranties? Best Buy only offers 2 years, and costs like $250, which sounds damn expensive. I wanna know if Dell offers a longer warranty, because I plan to use whatever I get as a desktop replacement. (I got sick of troubleshooting desktops and replacing motherboards, as well as feeling claustrophobic from sitting in the same spot for hours... :)
Mybad... The Asus G50 comes with the 9800M GS, not 9600, which notebookcheck.com has listed as a "Class 1" (the Radeon listed as a Class 2). That might have just answered my question. I'm still curious about Dell's warranties, though. An LED backlit screen could be really nice, but the idea of playing Crysis on my laptop is pretty sweet, medium details or not. :P
i just got this model too, 15'6"
wondering how to get bigger resolution as desktop icon is pretty big >"<
I could've sworn I was looking at those exact same customization options just the other day on the Dell USA site. I'm pretty sure it's come stateside.
Also, 1080p res for a 15" display is just nuts. I can imagine how inadequate my 19" 1680x1050 desktop display would feel next to a Studio 15 loaded out with a 1080p display. 900p is also an interesting option. Dell, why not just tell us the actual res instead of giving us *p names? If it's 1440x900, just say so.
Regardless, the P-series CPU and 512 MB HD 4570 options are very attractive for the Studio 15. For me, it's a tossup between that or the Studio XPS 13, but from what I've been reading, the 4570 beats out the 9400M and the "9500M" (not a true 9500M, it's a combination of some lower 9-series mobile GPUs), which has me leaning toward the Studio 15 at the expensive of some of the sexiness and size that the Studio XPS 13 has.
Erm... disregard the first part of that comment. I somehow managed to get this mixed in with my "Engadget posts from today" pile.
