Today's laptops are slim and trim (with some notable
exceptions), and as smaller cases demand smaller components Intel is doing its best to keep up, announcing two new CPUs specifically designed for the "ultra-thin" notebooks. They are the 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SU9600 and 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo SU3500, both joining its existing line of consumer ultra low voltage (CULV) chips to create three tiers of efficient and dainty processors: Celeron, single-core, and dual-core. No word on where these chips will be first making an appearance, but we can think of one upcoming
lithe lappy in which they'd be right at home.
fat chips not allowed
NO FAT CHIPS!
Real chips have curves.
I could see this going in the Dell Adamo's too...
If these chips are designed for low-power consumption, might they be making an appearance in netbooks? I noticed the term absent from this post.
The atom processors use even less power than Intel's ulv chips.
@fp, the atom processors don't have as good performance per watt as most core2 processors
@Drew Green, I think Engadget doesn't want to upset the "netbooks are cheap" crowd
I'm pretty sure Intel's Atom still has a smaller die footprint than anything else they've got, seeing how they can produce about 1200 from a standard wafer run.
No, and what is really stupid is that these were supposed to be "cheap" versions of the existing Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Solo ultra-low-voltage (ULV) models which have always been somewhat expensive.
Unfortunately, these new chips are all around $250, which is basically the same price as all the existing ULV chips.
In the next month AMD will come out with a new cpu of course waited for Intel than copied their Cpu and then release a crappier cheaper one as usual...
Don't hate the player...
And seriously, can we only report on the "cool" kids?

good point
intel releases Core i7 940 & 920
AMD releases Phenom II X4 940 & 920
AMD is hoping people get fooled by the same numbers at a cheaper price
Me thinks a processor like this could fine its way into a Mac netbook. Sounds strange since netbooks seem to stick to Atoms, but as we know Apple likes to find an excuse to charge more for their products and these would be a good low power chip with dual core to set itself above other netbooks.
Expect to see the Macbook Mini with a CULV chip this fall for $800, firmly missing the point of a netbook.
Yet they will fly off of shelves like nothing else.
can they just kill Celeron already?!
this is something good for the x300, now it can pack more of a bunch cpu wise.
**punch
I'll bet the Thinkpad x301 will be updated very soon with this new iteration. Why couldn't they just round it off at 2.0ghz ? eh wicked Intel. Raping the money from consumers in 1 small increment at a time. lol
I hope they marked down which six chips they screwed up by dropping a penny on them.
Wow. These are extremely slow (for me at least)
