ASUS' Eee PC 901 with 20GB SSD and 6-cell battery now just $268
An Eee PC costing $550 just 8 months ago is now selling for less than half that price from a trio of major on-line retailers. In an apparent across-the-board price cut, several SSD-based EEE PC 901 models have been slashed with your choice of Linux or XP. Most notable is the 8.9-inch netbook configured with a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 20GB SSD, Linux, and 6-cell battery. Careful though: the European CeBIT show (an ASUS favorite event) is just days away and with it should come a few new Eee PC models running the latest Intel processors and chipsets. Consider yourselves warned. Hit the read link for the details.

Pretty much all netbooks can deliver a 6 hour battery life if equipped with a 6-cell. Two weeks ago I was hunting for a netbook and was highly tempted to pull the trigger on the Samsung NC10 because it comes standard with a 6-cell, but in the end I settled for the HP Mini 1000 since it's much sleeker. Buying a netbook I wanted something light as possible with a usable battery and with a 6-cell the Samsung clocks nearly 1.4kg on the scale which is too much weight for a laptop with such little power.
But overall this is a good deal, the 20GB SDD which I welcome to see many more manufacturers offer as I find my 60GB 1.8 inch harddrives to be a major bottleneck in my laptops performance.

CeBit? You mean like next week ASUS will show a totally awesome new netbook which will tear this thing apart and put its pieces in the dust so we should buy old crap now because nobody will even want it the next week??
I'll take two with gift wrapping please, for the very best friends >:D
Alex @ Feb 26th 2009 7:16AM
I don't know... How much cheaper/faster can these get?
Dopefish @ Feb 26th 2009 7:29AM
Now bring that kind of price to the UK!!!
matto @ Feb 26th 2009 7:58AM
well ill know tomorrow if i need to cancel my pre-order 1000he blue from amazon.
J Williams @ Feb 26th 2009 8:04AM
You'll cancel ... it seems like all over the place with 1000HE pre-orders. I cancelled my HE order two days ago. I don't think I really have the need for something like this at this given time.
Good price for a little bitty netbook though, I think the 9" screen would drive me absolutely nuts.
Brianyman @ Feb 26th 2009 8:04AM
so cheap !! i will buy it definitely
Montusama @ Feb 26th 2009 8:18AM
Damn....just had to jump on the 900A that bb had for 200, oh well I rarely use it...so whatever
Jacqueline @ Feb 26th 2009 10:28AM
(Sigh) I'm bitching with ya. I got the same one from Newegg for my 10 y.o. after my old clunker Dell Inspirion fuzzzzzzzed out. Sucks my old 40gb portable drive won't work with it too! :(
I am tempted to get this for myself for a lightweight 'book to tote around but damn this recession!
imotionsrt4 @ Feb 26th 2009 8:49AM
That's only IF you get your 100 rebate...............
Michael @ Feb 26th 2009 9:09AM
I got the Asus 900 20G/1GB/Celeron/Linux model last summer when they were on $100 rebate, and when the MS Cashback was giving over 20% back. I ended up getting mine for almost this cheap after both the rebate and the cashback finally paid out. Only problem I have with it is the battery drain issue, so I wouldn't mind getting an Atom model to replace it.
thecow5 @ Feb 26th 2009 12:54PM
This looks like a verry good deal, but I have two questions.
Will WinXP/Vista/Windows 7 have drivers for it?
(I am thinking I can also try installing OS-X)
I know what a 20GB SSD HDD is but I am not sure what a 20GB E storage is. (is that an online Storage)
I will have to think about getting this or wait for the Atom N280.
Jayayess1190 @ Feb 26th 2009 7:14PM
All the drivers are on support.asus.com. I am typing this on a 901 with Windows 7 on one ssd and XP on the other. Check out eeeuser.com for more info.
TheCow5 @ Feb 26th 2009 10:08PM
Thanks, can you keep me up to day on any problems and your experience doing this. thecow5athotmail
I am thinking of getting this one next week.
I don't have a netbook and was wondering what the experience is like, is it like using a vanilla pentium as far as speed, how well does it run office and RDT or when do you start experiencing lag (not running any multimedia files)
pigsbladder @ Feb 26th 2009 12:20PM
I couldn't resist, I've been wanting one for a while, and I can't resist a good deal. I decided to get the pea green :p
prnkmonkie @ Feb 26th 2009 10:48AM
Ugh, Mail-In Rebates make me a sad Panda...
Darryl @ Feb 26th 2009 11:58AM
Ow burned. I paid $450 for mine. Imagine how pissed the people who paid $650 are right now...
Rahul (Rurouni Kenshin Forever!) @ Feb 26th 2009 7:46PM
Damn, I was excited for a few minutes until I saw the rebate, I hate them SO MUCH!
Josh @ Apr 1st 2009 11:15PM
I paid 369 for mine back in February via Amazon. I love my 901. Ever since the EEE PC 1000 they have drifted away from netbooks. Everyone should pull the netbook label off of there SMALL LAPTOPS. A netbook is supposed to be a SSD (not a spinning 24 hours a day, really fast, OLD FASHIONED hard drive.) and 7 inch / 8.9 inch screens. They are no LONGER NETBOOKS. They are normal small laptops now. Great Job HP (HP Mini 1000) ASUS (1000H and beyond) and everyone else. Now you need to change the labels from netbooks to laptops.
