Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic finally up for grabs Stateside
There was a bit of a false alarm at the flagship stores yesterday -- Nokia's New York and Chicago stores got inventory, but didn't start selling the 5800 right away, causing much anguish in the hearts of American plectrum lovers and our very own Chris Ziegler. Well, all has been rectified, and now you can pick up Nokia's touchscreen pioneer, the 5800 XpressMusic, for $399, unlocked and unsubsidized. If you aren't so much into retail stores you can head to Nokia's online store, though the phone is still inexplicably listed as "pre-order" there -- we're sure things will be rectified soon enough.

just a warning, research about the phone's list of faults, and you'll see the reason why its priced half of iPhone.
Link please?
and as it turned out, it wasn't that bad of a device....
"All NOKIA 5800 Come with defects"

I gave my wife my iPhone 3G and got the 5800 XM to replace it. Best thing I could have done, she's happy and I own a real smartphone again!

@Zunavio
Reading the link, Nokia have admitted to the problem and are fixing it.
@_o thx you guys, I was about to buy it.. I better wait for Nokia N97.
As Mobile Review state:
"My opinion that this phone is the best offering in its class hasn't changed at all."
They also state that this issue has been fixed, the manufacturer of the dodgy earpieces changed and that Nokia will correct all the defective units that were issued. They've also been absolutely open and honest about the issue which is more than you can say for some comapnies.
So the ones you get in the US will be fine because they're not the defective batch.
So.. The American one is "fixed"?
I just bought it (Europe) and i am a bit disappointed since mine turned out to be defective from day 1. When i turned off the lights and i was checking the phone(internet and applications) i noticed a small gap in the upper right corner since the light could escape the casing. When i searched a bit about my problem i figured out that i wasn't alone out there but most of 5800 have the same defect. There were TONS of users who got the same defects and there are numerous complains on the net about these defects on Nokia 5800. Now i am reading about the speaker and i feel like i gave 350 euro to buy SHIT.
Moreover shame on engadget,a blog that i trusted and got informed about technological news, that not even once made a notice about these kind of defects on this phone.
wow, i was low ranked because i mentioned iPhone? or because i made you guys aware what the phones problem were?
Denom, I am totally feel the same
So, if your phone had defects why didn't either of you have it replaced under warranty?
I DID ask for replacement . Right now i am waiting for a new phone, but since there are almost 70% defective devices as i can see from various polls over the internet you can't hope for something better you know.Maybe your next device turn out that is worst from your first one (defective speaker, dead pixels over time and the defective casing )..plus, i dont think that anyone who s buying a new phone is in mood to be in a situation like this . If you gonna buy one think twice .
"but since there are almost 70% defective devices as i can see from various polls over the internet"
Polls on the internet. A reliable source. Srsly.
On the other hand Nokia report a 7% defect rate with the batch of units affected.
You got a bad unit. It'll be replaced, don't assume that everyone else's is knackered just because yours - which will be replaced - is.
uhmm lets see ... if nokia says something, would probably be correct...yeah right nokia has nothing to loose so that how it should be.On the other hand if 70 out of 100 buyers have problems with their device ,then they must should lying, and be considered unreliable source because they dont want someone else, somewhere in the world to have the same phone as they do...how i missed it ?
If you are taking under more serious consideration a nokia's statement rather than the actual buyers of this phone , ok ,go ahead and buy it,you ll be happy to figure out by yourself what these 70 (percentage) are saying .
You used polls on the internet as a source. Seriously, get real.
There are faulty units out there, Nokia know about the issue and are replacing the defective parts or units. Yes, it's a cock up but one they're not hiding. You have a right to complain on your own behalf but don't start speaking for the rest of us, OK?
No, I have a 5800 which I got in January. If it's defective then it'll be replaced. Is that annoying? Yes it is? Am I going to whine on the internet and claim that the whole product line is defective? No I'm not.
Rectified?
Damn near KILLified!
HAR HAR HAR HAR
is that a guitar pick?
Yes, it comes with a Guitar Hero game.
Waiting for amazon T_T
$394 and in stock at Expansys:

That is the European version...
what carriers can i use this phone with?
I am not a big fan of at&t's service at all....
Not an American so the info I give you may be a bit off, but I'm pretty sure AT&T and T-Mobile are the only GSM providers in the US, and only AT&T's 3G operates on bands compatible with this phone. I don't know for sure, but maybe the European 5800 will work with T-Mobile's 3G, you'd have to do more research to be sure.
Ask yourself the most important question, will this replace my iPod touch ??yes or no. I think we all know the real answer .only one phone that can truly replace an iPod touch.. Exactly I see we all agree. Nokia falls very short of goal they set out to meet.fail!!
Looks nice.
Don't rush to buy it yet. I picked mine up at the Chicago flagship store and it is not picking up 3G. It is the NAM version! I checked with Nokia and they say return it. I am not the only one! It appears there might be a problem with this phone.
Not sure which provider you're with, but when Eurasian mobile manufacturers say "NAM 3G" they mean AT&T and Rogers. If you're on T-Mobile, they use a different frequency.
Of course, you might be an AT&T customer and you got a defective phone, I don't know. Just something to consider.
although i really like apple i'm not a fanboy. my service contract just expired (i live in spain) and i was interested in signing up with movistar to get an iphone. my current service provider called me and offered me this phone and a 30% discount on my monthly plan to stay with them. i told them i wanted to see the phone first so i went to an orange store and played around with it a bit. when they called back to offer me the 5800 i told them no thanks, it wasn't even close to what i was looking for. i received my iphone earlier this week and absolutely love it. maybe an iphone isn't for everyone but in my opinion it smashed nokias first attempt to really dethrone it.
Quite interesting that you want inferior phone. I guess that you do not like higher resolution display, better camera, fm radio, memory card slot or mms messaging let alone video calls..
This isn't Nokia's first attempt at dethroning the iPhone. This is Nokia's mid-level touchscreen, not even in the same class as the iPhone.
As for dethroning? You do realise Nokia is *on* the phone-throne, don't you? It's Apple and everyone else trying to dethrone Nokia.
actually i went ahead and got the far superior phone, i think most peoples responses to this article confirm that fact. also, like i mentioned before, i'm not an apple fanboy and i quite like nokia phones, but when apple came out with the iphone almost 2 years ago, they decided to think outside of the box and come out with something that the world has never seen before. now everyone is trying to come up with something to compete. you want to talk about the n95 or n96, go ahead...they're great phones but they're not in the same class as an iphone (if you use it as a music device, although it also has great apps, etc.). the 5800 is a music phone and whether you like it or not, it was made specifically to compete with the iphone (touch screen, express music, camera, etc.). it just seemed too rushed and quite inferior (and like i said, most comments to this post seem to agree with that fact). apple isn't trying to catch up to anyone, if so, their first phone would have been some kind of a nokia-style phone and i think it's clear that the 5800 is quite the apple-style phone. even though it has a camera with more megapixels (more megapixels doesn't mean it's a better camera), radio etc, doesn't mean it's better (oh, and by the way, i CAN send mms with my iphone).
The pricing is interesting at least.. in Portugal, Unlocked is 360 euro, and locked 315 Euro. Something like: 450 and and 400 USD. Although not that different.. it is worthy to note that the same price for unlocked in the US and locked in here.
You got to love those differences..
Anywhow, anyone know which firmware are the phones carrying. It seemd that V20 was pulled out of Nokia Updater as it had some bugs...
I know that most (all?) EU countries have to pay the dreaded VAT, which North Americans don't. Most states/provinces, as well as the Canadian federal government, have sales taxes, but they're generally not included in the list price like the VAT is. That probably makes up the difference in price.

Do you have something useful to say, or do you just spam?
@Canis_Minor
I posted a reply but it looks like the comments ate it :/
@Canis_Minor
Hmmm, it looks like pretty useful info to me! How often do you get to read phone reviews from independent bloggers? Have you even looked at it?
As for spamming - sure commenting with links gets me a few page hits, but it's nothing compared to what I get when Engadget picks up one of my hacks (which happens regularly)! Besides, my blog is non-commercial, so it's no like I make any money from page hits...
Anyway since you enjoy my links so much, check out Google maps on the 5800: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/12/13/google-maps-on-the-nokia-5800/
