ASUS has taken the wraps off its latest Eee PC, the 1008HA
we heard was on the way to follow up on the S101. As far as anyone can tell -- ASUS is a little coy on specs so far -- the laptop harbors fairly traditional netbook specs and a netbook pricepoint, but the exterior is all new and rather attractive. The computer is 1-inch thick and weighs 2.4 pounds, with a curved, shiny plastic "shell" (ASUS calls it "pearlescent") to give a bit more luster than the average Eee PC. ASUS is including 802.11n, Bluetooth, 3G and WiMAX options, and packing in it Eee Sharing and Eee Arena software. We'll be looking to dig up more specs and some hands-on time with this unit this week at CeBIT.

Looks thick to me!
i like how they try to taper off the front to make it liik like it is super thin... but the middle and back is thick like a thinkpad!
AHAHAH
...that's what she said!
"i like how they try to taper off the front to make it liik like it is super thin... but the middle and back is thick like a thinkpad!"
Hmm.. I wonder where I have seen the same idea before. Especially the super thin part.
You're opinion doesn't matter.
You seem to attach an "AHAHAHAHA" to every comment you post regardless of if it's a joke or not.
... I don't say this often, but Clak was better than you.
I miss iEye.
At least his comments were...inflammatory.
Looks like they learned that tapering/visual trick from Apple.
"Baby, you're as thick as a Thinkpad" sounds like a good female or M/M pickup line. Or maybe it's an insult? Depends on the Thinkpad model, I suppose.
@barc0de: I think most people in a situation like that, unless the "thinkpad" was out, would misinterpret "thick" as referring to their intelligence.
"...that's what she said!"
Actually, in this case I think that's probably the opposite of what she said...
thought it read "Eee PC 1008HAH"...lol?
Ahhh I see Asus have bought themselves a HP Mini 1000 too. Welcome to 2008.
Pretty awesome laptop, have heard the some people cut themselve with the edge of their laptop. It was a Mac I think...

I'll cut YOU with a laptop! GET OUT.
eee-sword by asus
just don't stick your eee-sword into an electrical socket.
If it costs ~$450, nice.
Agreed. I'm debating between purchasing this or the MSI X-Slim for my college work. Any suggestions? I'm kinda down on money.
"EEE"-Stounding.
You mean AstoundEEEng
forget the netbook. That keyboard behind it is EVEN more sexier!!!
Dual-core or die.
That's all.
Here's a video of that debut:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiKohfeEHEk
does that picture in the post above look like there is a cd-rom drive in the thing?
I don't think so.... doesn't look wide enough. one looks like it might be for hard drive access
I dont think it does. A lot of people think "if it has a cd drive, its not a netbook" but i think it would be nice to include one. Maybe a company could put a top opening drive that hide under the keyboard.
what are CDs?
Maybe not. They have to fit a computer in there, you know.
Apple, are you paying attention? This is exactly what your customers are asking for.
Small, inexpensive, reasonably powerful.
Yeah this thing is pretty much the MacBook Air Nano ...
With that many prefixes, it must be good.
it's like a smaller, cheaper, plastic MacBook Air.
Prefixes?
They'll call it the MacBook Breeze. It'll still be $800
Yeah, prefixes.
Can't you tell this is a nano?
But not just any nano, it's an air nano.
Can you imagine, even... a macbook air nano!
A prefix is something that comes before the name. I think the word you're looking for would be suffix?
"mac" is a prefix, at least.
Maybe it is time for me to finally get a Eee PC.
That logo is so ugly. I wish they had more sense to make it more streamlined and simpled like "EEE" with thick, sharp letters.
I wish, they'd used the Apple logo too.
I'm assuming from the size of this, it will not be sporting a 9 1/2 hour battery like it's bigger brother.
That would be too good to be true,.I wouldn't be surprised to see 16gb ssdp
well... looks like it's an estimated 5 Hours which I'm sure translates to 3 1/2 to 4 real time.
Per Asus blog rumor $520,.,compared to apple air starts at $1800. But not apple.
now we all can own an airbook
Yea, just as fast and 1/4 the price!
Im getting one!
Finally, proper right SHIFT key design/placement!!! That was THE reason I never bought ASUS netbook even when it's as nicely designed as the S101.
Yes it can cut cake....... and turkey
ASUS always seem ahead of the curve in this niche. With the 1000HE and this model, it looks like ASUS is getting back the luster of its netbooks.
Engadget keeps writing that various laptops/netbooks support 802.11n, but never mentioning if its on the 2.4GHz band or the 5 GHz one. Wouldn't it be nice if they specified?
(yes, I realize that if it doesn't say it supports 802.11a, chances are the n support is on the 2.4GHz band, but still, it'd be nice to know for sure, as I like to segregate my n and b/g devices to maximize performance while still having everything connected wirelessly)
totally agree... no 5GHz on the Eee 1000HE was a huge letdown- it would be helpful to know which competitors have it.
This is going to be mine.
1. Great Looking
2. Light
3. Bang up to date.
4. No OSX
5. I won't have to be taking it back to the Genius Bar every 3 months.
Gimme
ASUS has been make their netbooks all glossy and fancy lately. I would have the cover destroyed in a week or two.
Wish they'd go back to the matte like my 900.
And that, f00, is why Apple's latest changes to TimeCapsule and router are so outstanding. You don't HAVE to choose, anymore!
Of course, this isn't going to help me PAY for a new TC, but at least the option is there... at some point... when the economy comes back up... which'll probably long after I've had to eat my dog and cat...
was gonna get the overpriced dell mini 10. But not if this comes out with US 3G
what the heezee is up with friggn' black bezel. c'mon folks...ain't nobody got a sense of style anymore? the insides should match up!
otherwise, looks like I'm gonna have to trade in the Wind.
ASUS just picked up a new customer.
I love my MacBook Pro, love it to death even, but lugging it to school (along with school books) is still fairly brutal on my back. This nice little lady on the other hand would appear to be quite petite.
At least the Macbook Pro should be lighter than a Compaq V3000. That thing weighs the same as all 4 of my engineering books i take to uni. And most of them being 1000+ pages. Lets hope this thing have better hinges than the Macbook Air, even if it doesn't at least it shouldn't cost 2 legs and 10 fingers to get it fixed. A 800 bucks price tag on an original Macbook Air hinge can probably get you a custom made Ti one.
Looks nice, and I like the 3G. Need those Atom processors to get just a little stronger though before I'd want one.
Yep the air is shivering in its large boots
Eee PC, ultra portable. Isn't that redundant?
Looks like a bulky MacBook Air wannabe.
Seriously, doesn't seem to have ports, and is too bulky for that look.
But then again, aren't all PCs Mac wannabes?
(See, you don't need iEye, I'll pick up his slack)
Seriously though. The only thing that could save it from being a silly MBA wannabe with a small screen and slow processor would be a nice low price. If this can match other netbooks in price and specs, then fine.
It's like the sexy supermodel cousin to the 1st gen clamshell iBooks.
This looks a lot like the Acer Aspire One I'm using right now... if it went on a diet and thinned up. The colors and finish are damn near identical.
@Greg I think you are being fooled by the scale. This is only a 10" netbook. If you saw this thing in person it would look super small AND super thin. Asus says its no more than 1" thick at its thickest point, which puts it within 0.1" of the MBA, and much smaller overall. It also appears to have coverings on each side of the device which likely are covering a standard assortment of ports.
Roughly as thin as the MBA, smaller, lighter... and likely less than 1/3 the price. This is more than a MBA wannabe. This is a device that evolves the netbook form factor... a form factor which is helping make overpriced devices like the MBA less and less relevant. Also, keep in mind that far more netbooks have already been sold than the number of MBAs Apple will EVER sell.
I kinda agree that it looks like the acer aspire one. the same black bezel, the white casing and white keyboard. but the twist here is the hinge which kinda mimics the MSI wind to some extent (or MBA perhaps).
Asus is converging products here.. haha
I hate the thick rim around the screen on these ASUS PC's. There is room enough for an 11 inch screen in there. Otherwise I would have bought the EEE 1002HA by now.
I really hope Asus isn't going to be putting in those weak ass Atom chips(1.6 dual core not possible?) I am so over those chips and 2GB min Ram would be fantastic. Then at least I would buy one and put Vista(7 when available) in it and it would be usable to a real end-user
But can it fit in a manilla envelope?
A portless netbook!?
where is USB, Ethernet...
Even if these are hidden, it seems a VGA port is too large for this.
and why can't Asus make lighter laptops (
Are you all women? Coz this look like a toy for women..
