Clevo's 18.4-inch M980NU desktop replacement gets put through its paces

The gang over at Notebook Check just got their hands on that Clevo M980NU we've had our eyes on for a couple months now. A desktop replacement clearly aimed at the gaming set (what else could all those blue LEDs possibly mean?), this guy rocks the new nVidia Geforce GTX 280M GPU which, combined with its 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, gets called out for its "first-class performance in virtually all fields of application." The 18.4-inch display is no slouch either: with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a max contrast of 595:1, this guy offers "much bigger color space" than most notebooks, although the reviewer points out that you'd see better performance from an RGB-LED panel display such as the Dell Studio XPS 16. But don't take our word for it -- to check out the comprehensive, earth-shattering review hit that read link.

Someone explain the target market of these please,
i dont understand the point of them.
Lan party gamers?
Military or college gamers/heavy users/graphic artists?
Think: Small dorm rooms, small bunkrooms, small studios.
When I was in the Navy a few years ago, some of the rooms I had to live in had a ridiculously small desk space, so fitting a monitor, case, and all the usual accompaniments was pretty impossible. Something like this would have been perfect for spaces like that while still wanting the power of a full desktop setup.
Well Engadget put it into the title; "desktop replacement"
It gives you the power of a desktop in a fairly portable case.
Good for LAN parties or frequent travelers who want to game in their hotel rooms.
I live in New York for school, Hong Kong for summer, somewhere else for a month or so during the summer. Far enough you can't even take a XPC, but long enough you wanna game.
After using the luxuriously spacious MacBook trackpad anymore, I don't think I can go back. What's the deal with these tiny trackpads on giant computers!?
i have to agree with you. At least Apple can get something right.
Well this is a gaming laptop so anyone using it will probably be using a mouse, making a large trackpad largely redundant
It still seems weird to not offer the capability of decent trackpad use.
The track pad is not tiny. It's just dwarfed by the size of the 18.4" monitor on the beast.
Well we're talking in general about PC laptops.
most ppl dun use trackpads with large computers like that tho.. *always has a mouse*
Lets all wait till OLED laptops which will beat all other laptops in their contrast and will save some battery juice.
i'm tired of waiting.
The only waiting I'm waiting will be for Windows 7 to hit multitouch netbooks, and Tegra Androids to be out.
I'm still waiting for Unicorns to show themselves to me.
I checked the review, looks like you can fit 3 hard drives in there. Nice!
You should at least give a try to one of these gaming notebooks. Amazing machines.
It's like pushing technology to its limits.
Along with your wallet.
and your desk space
price please...
I'm considering 1 of 2 options... based on price and practicality:
1) Gaming desktop + Windows 7 multitouch netbook... or
2) Desktop-replacement super laptop (aka gaming laptop)
The first option gets me a better gaming rig, with zero gaming portability. Only my work would be made portable.
The second one gives me portable gaming, only with a weaker gaming rig (no gaming laptop so far can play Far Cry 2 smoothly on ultra-high with AA on, not even an Alienware M17x)
Not to mention the second option will be at least 1k more expensive...
What was the price?
From the article it said around 1900 euros.
This is awesome!!!! Will they sell it in the Philippines?
The new Clevo looks like the old Qosmio.
