Samsung's Nano-powered Q1EX UMPC loses its QWERTY, gains 4.5-hour battery at the FCC
Meet the latest iteration of the Samsung Q1 handheld: the NP-Q1EX. First spotted at CES in January, Sammy's going back to its UMPC roots by ditching the split QWERTY in favor of a clean, slate look that keeps the eye focused on the 7-inch, touchscreen display with 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution. Inside you'll find XP Tablet Edition running on a 1.2GHz VIA Nano ULV U2500 processor, VIA's Chrome9 HC graphics, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a SiRF Star GPS receiver, SD card slot, and a rear-mounted camera of unspecified pixel density. The unit that passed through the FCC for US airwaves approval also features a 60GB hard disk and 4-cell, 4,000mAh lithium ion battery for up to 4.5-hours of battery life according to Samsung. A quick search through the Intertubes also reveals a retail price of about $775 at on-line retailers. No launch date yet, but it can't be long now can it? A couple more pics after the break.

I'm too lazy to translate that, someone please tell me what they said.
Ya know, it's absurd that Windows Vista has gotten SUCH a bad rap that manufacturers have just given up entirely on pre-installing it - instead opting for a 7-year old OS! I personally can't stand XP. Until these devices start sporting Vista or 7, you won't see me anywhere near these gorgeous pieces of hardware. I went with the HTC Shift recently... at least IT had Vista (and runs FINE btw).
my 2 cents.
You've, obviously, never used Vista on a UMPC. Most of these things are way too underpowered for Vista.
Yea, I think most of the bad reputation for Vista is undeserved, but that doesn't mean it is going to start magically working on 1.2 Ghz Via hardware (The Nano is much better than the C7, certainly, but it is no Core 2 Duo, and Vista would be a little rough running on a 1.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo)
Strange move removing the split qwerty, id rather have hard keys than none at all
I can well see Android running on this...
godofb: UMPC are over rated, they should stop making them. iphone for everz. Thanks for wasting you time and translating this.
Tim Brown: You, sir, are an iDiot
So they remove all the keys and buttons, keep the same screen size, and yet its still the same size as the previous model, how the *% does that happen?

This is a spiffy little device. I think I like the alwaysinnovating touchbook better. It has a better pricepoint. But this is something to watch. I do like VIA.
its so damn slim and trim. i love such gadgets
I hope they'll continue offering keyboard version of this tablet. It is such a pain to use tablets without real keyboard.

I had the Q1 Ultra. The features were checklist good, but the implementation was awful. Using a split keyboard like that is a nightmare, nothing like a real or even thumb keyboard. The cameras were just horrible. The blinking status lights where you can't help but be distracted by them - why? And other badly thought out features. I was glad to get rid of it. At least this one might have enough battery for a couple of movies.
What was bad about the split keyboard? I own a PepperPad3 and think it works out fairly well.
Yeah you're using only 2 thumbs or so...but works great for small emails and whatnot...and you can walk and type at the same time.
The keyboard isnt really that bad, great for passwords and short emails
I'd be all over this thing, if it was five hundred bucks.
At this price, they may as well just not release it.
I hope it doesn't suck as much as the one I bought. Damn thing is useless!
let's see ,samsung=$775 or apple touch $229. Hmmh I wonder who will survive. State of global economy , let's be realistic!!!
my ipod touch can't run microsoft office
don't ask why I'd need that on the go thats not the point the point is that those devices are in two completely different markets.
Binary is so badass you guys

What about the forward-facing camera...wasn't this dropped too?
If so...I w/think it inifinitely more useful to have front-facing camera than a rear-one on a brick of this size...w/be quite unwieldy for photo taking me-thinks.
And gains all kinds of suck.
Agh. with a winning formula from the NC10 we didn't they just add a capacative touchscreen and a hinge to flip the screen. job done, convertable touchscreen umpc/netbook with a 5 hour battery life and windows 7 ready.
