ASUS G71Gx boats of GeForce GTX 260M graphics, other extravagances
A followup to last year's G71, the G71Gx has ASUS at its extravagant best. The 17-inch laptop packs a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution, backed up by a brand-new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics card with 1GB of VRAM. There's also room for 12GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives inside, along with Blu-ray and Altec Lansing speakers to wrap it up with a bow. No word on price, but we're guessing ASUS isn't stuffing these things in cereal boxes.

That's not a laptop, it's a desktop with a screen taped on!
It's a Portable Desktop.
A portatop?
portapotty
A Portatoppy
A desklappy ?
a poopydoopy
A laptop?
call it the "macbook killer""
a pappop
Doesn't mean I wouldn't love it anyway! Thing of beauty that, pity I'll probably have to sell a kidney in order to get my hands on one.
Must have a "boatfull" of GeForce GTX 260M
or a leafload
i don't see any boats
if it can fit boats of GeForce GTX graphics in there, then it's definitely not a laptop.
Uhh.. .a beast, for sure, but considering the price tag that it most likely will feature, I'll still probably go with the g70 when I get my tax return...
I hope it's in the sub $2000 price range.....
Question, how good would the 260M play Far Cry 2 on ultra high? I hear that the better 280M is nothing but a desktop 8800 made smaller.
The GTX260M is basically the last-gen 9800M GTX, die-shrunk to 55nm (from 65nm) and with a moderate increase in clock speeds.
Performance should be slightly below the desktop 8800GT, which has the same number of stream processors (112) but higher clocks.
So in other words, The (assumed) much higher price of pretty much any machine won't warrant the same leap in performance over the 9800m gt?
Also - the gs isn't far behind the gt, is it?
9800M GTX and 9800M GTS, have been replaced by the GTX 280M and GTX 260M respectively. Same g92 chip with die shrink , just a new name and much higher price tag. The 9800M GS is the GTS 160M, Tthe 9600M GT is now the GT130M. Nvidia just renamed them to make more money.
Just goes to show: ASUS makes the best.
If you're talking desktop replacement, then I agree (at least they look better than the Alienwares)
But there are other companies that beat them in the more portable segment.
My only question is if it's called a Macbook PRO why doesn't it have an Nvidia GTX 260M ?
Because apple is "sexy." A high-end gpu would slaughter its battery life, weight and thickness.
Because Steve Jobs hates computer games.
Because George Bush hates black people.
Because high-end GPUs are a bag of hurt.
I just love how comments are always so relevant to the discussion and never go off on a tangent just to attempt to be humourous and entertaining.

Any word of the processor?
Agreed... it's a fairly major omission.
One of those drives should really be an SSD...
From Intel P9500 with dual core 2.53 GHZ to Intel QX9300 with quad core 2.53 GHZ with a turbo mode overclocking it more 300 MHZ!
Awwww.
(Puts down spoon.)
looks like the Hasbro "Optimus Prime Special Edition Transformers II My First Laptop" won't be coming in your box of Frosted Flakes...
Powerful, maybe-- but if that's actually a picture of it, it's rather.. ugly.
woah 12 gigs of ram? are games really that demanding!? ...thank god i gota ps3
and dont start crying over pc vs ps3 big boys
Your just very ignorant.
Games don't use nearly 12gb of ram, that can be used for other tasks such as running many virtual machines at once, intense multitasking.
I hope your PS3's Blu-Ray drive doesn't crap out on you, that happened to me. : (
I Wonder why anyone would spend more money on a gigantic laptop, rather than a regular desktop with better specs according to the price...
cuzzzz some people have friends and would like to bring their computer places with them?
i assume it's because most people don't want to lug around a 40lb computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and cables when traveling? just a stab in the dark. i could be completely wrong.
Yes that would be the case. I just sold my gaming desktop and bought an Alienware m15x so I could play in more places and bring it to lans/friend's house. Now all I have to do is bring one bag with my laptop, clothes, games, headset, etc in it. Before I had to bring my computer, monitor, bag with keyboard and games and mouse and such, AND another bag with a little clothes and stuff. It was nuts!
Don't call me an alienware fanboy. I was just looking for a great deal and this happened to be the best deal I could get. Barely used Alienware m15x for only $750!!!
"supporting up to 12GB of DDR2", doesn't say it HAS 12GB's of RAM straight off the belt.
Nowadays for the average user you wouldn't need anything more than 5 maybe 6GB's of RAM.
This was a reply for Ry, can't reply to him -_-
that toshiba laptop with the flames has some competition for ugliest laptop out there
nah it's still way uglier than this thing
Insane!!!!!I believe apple just got raped hard!!! Blows any apple outta the water.
Except that its heavier than any Apple desktop and is made of plastics, unlike an unibody Macbook Pro? Plus likely a medicore 220cdm CCFL backlit screen? Stop wanking to specs my boy, different folks have different needs.
The MBP has benefits over this and this has benefits over the MBP, both for very different audiences.
Ooops my bad I meant Apple laptop. It is a legitimate comparison: the 17" Macbook Pro is 2.9kg, the old Asus G71 was 4.2kg. The screens is a bit of a reach but if you do some research Apple screen are usually better than Asus screens. As for the plastics comment, its true. I made a legitimate point that this machine is in another catagory from the MBP, so rank me low if you want and keep beating your man chest about how great you are while plugging up your ears.
what the fuck is a MBP?
Macbook Pro
