Acer Aspire One mod adds eSATA port, an element of danger

The blogster known as tnkgrl has just rounded out a delightful series of step-by-step Acer Aspire One hacks covering the gamut from RAM upgrades to installing internal Bluetooth, a 1.8-inch HDD, and HSDPA 3G. For the final part of the series she's salvaged an eSATA socket and placed it just above the venerable netbook's second SD card slot -- and she's provided enough photographic evidence that if this were a crime, she'd go away for a very long time. Of course, this sort of anti-social warranty-voiding business ain't for the timid, but if you're feeling rather Legend Of Billie Jean, here's your opportunity to go wild.

I call bullshit on this one.
Everyone knows women can't add sSATA ports to netbooks.
Welcome to the Internet -
Where men are men,
Women are men,
And children are the FBI.
tnkgrl isn't a woman
According to the article, which addresses tnkgrl as "she", she is.
Rule 30 - no girls on the internet, sorry.
Hmmm, let me check... Yep, I'm still a girl!
Fucking dumbasses.
Harsh.
"Hmmm, let me check... Yep, I'm still a girl!"
So, you had to check because?
@Joseph I was a joke, stupid... Apparently too clever for you!
@tnkgrl
sorry, I forgot to close my sarcasm tag. Why the ad-hominem attacks?
@Joseph because you guys are being sexist jerks? And yeah, I missed the sarcasm tag :)
chill out, it's a joke: http://encyclopediadramatica.com/No_girls
@maveric101 oh I know... It's still sexist!
chill out tnkgrl. you just went from 'cool modder girl' to 'obnoxious feminist bitch' with those few comments
http://www.xkcd.com/322/
Seems relevant. OMG THUR R NO GIRLZ ON THE INNERTUBES really isn't that funny anymore.
Right... Just because I call you on your shit I go from cool modder girl to obnoxious feminist bitch! Way to take responsibility for your crap -roll eyes-
You know what us cool modder girls (obnoxious feminist bitches or not) don't like? Sexist assholes. Get this through your thick little skull and perhaps one day you'll get some action instead of jerking off to my hacks.
first
false.
EPIC FAIL
Isn't it nice to be second eh?
ive done that :D
then engadget deleted the first post, so i was first!
there is still hope :)
Where the hell is that banhammer??
Nice Idea & Clean Install
I could do without the "Storage Expansion" label
@CraigJ That label was already there! (How appropriate, eh?) See, the left SD slot on the SSD version of the Aspire One is allows you to expand the storage of the built-in SSD via SD cards. The right SD slot is a just standard card reader...
Sexay. Why can't eSata ports be more common?
Because eSATA (or regular SATA for that matter) does not supply any power, unlike USB. Therefore if you want to use an eSATA port you still need to somehow power the device.
@ Paul
4-pin Firewire doesn't supply power and I'm not too aware of many devices that exploit 6 or 9 pin Firewires' power. Not trying to be argumentative, just curious why that would be a huge issue.
"I'm not too aware of many devices that exploit 6 or 9 pin Firewires' power."
Any 2.5" external firewire drive will. It would be more interesting to find one that doesn't.
wholeheartedly agree on the need for more eSATA! netbooks seem to be generally limitd to only 100MB/s ethernet or 802.11n 2.4GHz so eSATA is required for any high speed transfer!!!!! wtf!!!
The lack of power in eSATA ports is just moronic. Talk about missing the point. Now we have to sit around and wait for yet another I/O port to emerge, since Apple so flubbed the promotion of FireWire.
Pop an HDMI port on the back, that'll be a nice thing to see.
The Dell Mini 10 has an HDMI port :) I think we will see this as a standard on most netbooks fairly soon.
Props to you, ma'am. The mini-10 is my next toy.
Posts like this keep me interested in Engadget.
I'm pretty sure this is what everyone has been looking for. Seriously, why didn't anyone think of this before? I might buy one (if this is real) just to say i got one.
great, well done and useful mod.
But how did tnkgrl knew where the eSATA was located?
@Frank follow the link and read my blog post :)
Woman's intuition. They're smarter than us.
Major props, tnkgrl! I'm a big fan of your work.
sweet, to bad i dont like that computer anyways
Could give to shits about this article. thanks for making my day and mentioning. Legend of Billie Jean
another great job tnkgirl! Cheers!
I dont quite see the point of this. Sure, its a well done mod and all but why would you need esata? The netbook has a zif hdd out of an iPod which probably maxes out around 20-30mb/s. So anything you transfer to/from the netbook would be limited by the internal storage. Means that it offers no benfits over USB and also its more cumbersome, because of esata's lack of power. You can probably run applications off of it but carrying around an esata hdd would be annoying.
Cool mod, yes. Useful, not really.
I agree that it's not an extremely useful mod - it's a mostly a fun mod. Why do it then? Because I can!
One advantage is that I don't have to use up a USB port to connect (and optionally boot from) a super fast and/or super large external drive/array...
tnkgirl you are awesome.
Anyone know how to build a narrow 4 port USB hub into a Portege R500-S5003? I need like eighty more ports.
