Slimmer Acer Aspire One pops up in the FCC
We're not sure what Acer is up to lately, but this is the second slightly-revised Aspire One we've seen in the past few days -- it looks like that rumored slimmer model with the weird hinge VGA and Ethernet ports is in fact real and headed for our fair shores. No hard specs on this mysterious stranger just yet except for the presence of the 3G SIM slot, but the model number Z68 AO530 strongly suggests that there's an Atom Z530 lurking in there instead of the usual N270. We'll let you know if we find out anything else -- hit the read link for some more pics and oodles of FCC test data.

Why dont the LCD's ever fit snugly with the bases on netbooks. There is always the unsightly "gap" of sorts where the lcd curves in and the base curves out.
Wasnt a fan of the Aspire One, still arent, not a fan of anything Acer. When they actually bring something innovational to the table, wake me.
Im gonna pick up a Dell Mini 9 tomorrow, shame Apple dont have a netbook, they just lost themselves a sale, cause i sure as hell am not going to pay $1649 (Aus) for a Macbook to check Engadget and play the odd movie.
I understand the Aspire One, but nothing Acer?
Hell, their screens are amazing. Usually a hundred cheaper than good brands, with the same features, and sometimes better quality.
When Apple decides to release their netbook, any sales they have lost to Dell, Acer, etc, will be QUICKLY made up for through their ad campaign.
@flash
I strained my eyes serching but just could not find the apple word anywhere in this article.
@ Flashpoint: I never knew that add campaigns made money!! And here I was, thinking it was sales of a product that makes you money.
Had an Acer laptop die on me for no reason (motherboard) plus their laptop designs are just AWFUL. Dell are really climbing the design ladder, plus they are a good mix of quality and price.
@coldwave
Don't challenge the the basis of our society. Advertising allows us to watch television over the air, view websites, etc, all for "free." All this happens based on the assumption that, yes, ad campaigns WILL eventually make money.
@Flashpoint
Seriously doubt the apple netbook will steal any netbook sales, as apple will not release a crappy product that would be required of it costing $300. For apple to build a netbook for you, you're looking at least $700, if not $800. Apple will continue to charge a premium for their name, and there's just no way they would swallow that pride for one product, AND put out a device that's only capable of providing a crippled computing experience.
The FCC gets all the cool shit. jealous.
I will never again buy a Dell. I sent two back recently. Spent hours on with Tech support India. After the litany of moronic questions "is it plugged in, can you pres ctrl-alt-del "... all having nothing to do with my issue. I decided my blood pressure was worth more than the computers.
In addition I have told everyone I know about my experience.
I replace my dells with ACERS... I loved them. The one time I called Tech Support I spoke with someone in Texas who actually understood my question and I understood his reply.
No more Dells for me or my company!!!
Put OSX on it = Air Aspire One.
Sorry dude, if its got a Z-series CPU in it, then it can't run OS-X. If you're going to be a troll, at least learn your facts.
And why exactly can you not use a Z-series? If it's capable of SSE2 & 3, then it should be capable of OSx86.
Do you know of a technical reason why the Z-seies wouldn't work?
If not, I suggest you not spread misinformation.
I bought an Acer, hated it, a Dell, which I like very much. I'm not crazy about ANY of the netbooks -- way too slow to my taste -- but of all of them, I think the Dells are the best designed and best value. Apple? If they come out with a netbook or netbook-type device, it'll probably cost more than a low-end laptop.
The Aspire One is just fine for it's intended purpose/audience. The Xmas special @ Wal-Mart had the 1GB, 160GB HD, WinXP 6-cell battery (over 6.5 hours of surfing) shipping free to the store for $348. My oldest son loaded Office 2007 Ultimate (at the special student price) for $65. The little screen is okay for the free NetFlix movies and for less than the cost of a handheld device you have a real computer that more than fulfills it's niche intentions.
Now for a REAL laptop, Toshiba's mid-range models are $449 shipped at New Egg.
Sometimes the economy downturn has an upside...
What is Laptop makers problem?! None of them have firwire! Firewire and a fast hard drive are among my only requirements for a laptop but Dell and HP are almost the only companies that make them. Apple only gives you two FW ports if you shell out for the 17inch (3000+). I am an audio engineer so maybe I am biased but firewire is so much superior to USB it is not even funny. Firewire hard drives are the most stable on the market and firwire 800 actually fights with eSATA for supremacy (mostly cuz HD's are not fast enough for either interface, but SSD's are gettin faster daily.). But seriously acer and toshiba get two thumbs down for not even offering firewire in most of their models. And where are fast Netbooks I am tired of the idea of lugging around a laptop that weighs ten pounds. Slap a quad-core 8 gigs of ram, an SSD and FW into a dell mini 9 and ill cream my pants.
PS USB sucks, I want FW flash drives now that SSD's are kickin ass.
how much more slim can it get :)
Looks like more tapered, rather than actually slimmer...
Comparing the thickness (at an angle, so inaccurate) to the rulers in the picture, its under an inch thick, so it actually is thinner. The A150 is 1.2" thick...
If Acer pulls an Asus and starts dropping Apsire Ones like I drop paramours, I am so out of here.
slim or not, it still looks shady.
Yeah, that's gotta be the Z530 there as (looking at the FCC's pics) it's clearly the US15W chipset and not the 945GSE found on the N270 systems.
Would someone please explain to me why most laptops have a VGA out? I just don't get it. I could understand HDMI &/or DVI, but not VGA.
For business use. Most projectors have VGA connectors at the moment. So to share your powerpoint, you need a VGA connector.
Today a guy with a Macbook tried to plug the class' VGA projector into his mini display port, he realized that he would need an adapter meanwhile all the people with PCs were able to plug the projector straight into the computer. My netbook plugged in quite easily but I realize in the future the VGA is going to be quite outdated.
I actually just ordered the Acer Aspire One off of amazon. After seeing this, im actually thinking of sending it back then getting this! Not sure if thats such a good idea through, because it looks to me (From the FCC Docs) that the only major improvements are the processor, chipset, internal 3G, and the new port layout.
