General Dynamics Itronix GD8000 notebook for extreme conditions, or the extremely clumsy
It's been a hot minute since we heard anything from General Dynamics in the tough notebook department, so it's good to see the company come back with a product that really raises the bar. The Itronix GD8000 sports an Intel Core 2 Duo SL9400 processor, 4GB of memory, integrated GMA 4500MHD graphics, 120GB storage, and a 13.3-inch DynaVue sunlight-readable touchscreen display. But that ain't all! This bad boy also features integrated GPS, WiFi, a biometric fingerprint reader, a smartcard reader, and an integrated Gobi 2000 WWAN module. Bluetooth is optional. As far as the toughness goes, with its magnesium chassis and polycarbonate case this bad boy meets MIL-STD 810F standards, able to withstand a drop from 42 inches, 30 gallons of water at 40 mph, and operates in temperatures anywhere from -22°F to 140°F. One more pic after the break.

GMA 4500MHD graphics = Epic Fail.
yeah totally, because when you're in the desert, the Antarctic, the top of a mountain, etc, you just have to do 3D rendering, AutoCAD, Maya, Photoshop, etc.
You are the epic FAIL i guess when you are trying to plot a plan to win a battle or just doing research in the Sahara, you want to play Crysis go back to bed and here have a cookie
Usually a though workplace is too a dirtiest place and i don't think so that this notebook can runs with some level of dirty particles (for example a Desert or a mining company).
Your local community college has classes for English. Please take a few prior to posting on blogs, writing emails, or composing letters to the English speaking world.
Not everyone that reads and/or posts on this blog is from SmallTown, USA. Too bad that community college you went to didn't have classes on manners and being polite.
He does bring up a good point, if poorly worded. Can this laptop handle alot of dust and grime? How hard is it to clean the vents? Maybe you can wash them clean with a hose? That would be a novel way to clean a computer! lol
Hey Engadget--Panasonic is going to be SO ticked off it you do to their trademark "Toughbook" what you did for "Netbook." Now go sulk in delusions of grandeur . . .
EUREKA!
Best Feature is probably that built in Brief Case Handle.
But is it... a bad boy?
Correction: They are GD6000, the company i work for just got 300 of them. Great devices.
yeah, i was gonna say... that looks like a 6000 and not 8000 on the case to me lol.
...Anyone besides me nervous when you put a device prone to catching on fire (a la battery fires), and encase it in one of the hottest-burning substances that there is (Magnesium)?
Famous last words: What's the worst that could happen?
Where the hell did they come up with this military specification?
So a .125GPM stream going at 40mph for 4 hours? When in the hell are you going to run into that situation?
A submarine probably.
If I buy a few of them to you reckon they'll throw in an F-16?
We used to use these for demos of some simulation technologies for Army platforms. These demos would take place in dirty environments where a ruggedized laptop was necessary. The older version of this laptop performed well but the 3D renering was lacking. The major problem we had with that series was that the machine would overheat very quickly and shut down. We had to restart the machine every 20 minutes or so.
