Nokia E71x arriving at AT&T stores, due out next Tuesday
Looks like the Nokia E71x is finally about to make its long-awaited entrance on AT&T -- Boy Genius says handsets are starting to show up at stores nationwide. If all goes according to plan, this slice of subsidized style will set you back $199 on contract when it launches on March 24 -- a price that sort of makes us wish we'd sprung for that one-day-only $289 unlocked unit on Amazon. Come on, AT&T, at least hit us with that super hot white version, will you?

it's still available at the nokia store for a bit more, but the nokia site works w/a partner to accept up to 4 old phones for trade-in
so if you had some old phones lying around that are worth 25-50 bucks, you could get a decent price on a proper unlocked phone direct from Nokia! it makes the E63 a decent deal, too
in before iPhone $199 comment...
@iGoon
Wut?
I've been trying to keep up with the E71, I want to like it, but have yet to see any real reason to get it. I've always like the call quality on Nokia's phones, even more so than my current SE w760. What does S60 do that is better than WinMo? (serious question, I still rock the dumbphones, looking to get smarter, please don't give me the "WinMo is M$ evil suxx0rz!!!1" bs though)
S60 is like Windows Mobile, without the lag.
If you're coming from dumbphones, you're not gonna see two much difference between S60 and WinMo on a QWERTY device. Both OS's are fully customizable and have a huge array of 3rd party apps. When it comes to Internet Experience, both can install 3rd party browsers that support flash. Maybe WinMo does Office slightly better but S60 supports BES (both have support for exchange). However on the E71 you're gonna find a killer battery life and fast processing speeds...plus the stainless steel build quality of the E71 is like no other...
Bull. I use N82, and the thing is far from the fastest phone in the world. My buddy has N82 as well, and it is doing the same thing. Lastly, guy at work is using N82, and he had N95, and what do you know - it is slow!
I support Activesync for my company, I worked on at least 5 different WinMo models, no issues.
I like E71 because email on N82 works, but it is nothing to write home about. If I could have E71 form factor with the camera from N82, it would be a perfect phone, other than being slow.
I have limited experience with Symbian, but best as I can tell the non-touch versions of the two OSs are very similar in experience and ability. It's really personal preference which is better, but if you're looking for a workhorse phone you can't go wrong with either. They have by far the largest selection of useful applications of all the mobile OSs, pretty much anything you can think of that you might want for communication or getting work done will be available.
It's got some cool features missing from Windows Mobile. Stuff like a WebKit web-browser, podcasting client, USB mass storage mode as standard, iTunes support on Mac and Lotus Notes syncing out-of-the-box. I'm not aware of any complete up-to-date comparison though, sadly.
hmmm i wish they would just update the firmware of the e71 to include all the software of the e71x..
also if you guyse want the super white version just order the covers online and replace it.. its only a few screws
My wife loves her E71. Way more than the G1 & tons more still than the Dash she had prior.
The quality of build is impressive. Use of metal is a nice touch. But they keyboard & usability are really what set it apart.
What didn't she like about the Dash? I carried one for about a year and it consistently impressed me with its build quality and ability. Every time I thought I had reached the limits of its abilities I would discover some new application or a new cooked rom for it and it would be like a whole new phone again.
I use the G1 now mostly because I love playing with the Android SDK and making little apps for various things, but I still kind of miss my old Dash. It had what I consider to be the perfect size and form factor of any phone. It just seemed to nail the QVGA + QWERTY slate style better than any Blackberry or Palm OS phone I had used before.
you could just wait until june when they announce their full screen touch e-series with e71 keyboard, ala palm pre ;)
Hmmm
I currently use an unlocked version of the E71 on AT&T. Since it's coming to AT&T, does it mean I'm going to have to switch from my dirt cheap MEDIA MAX plan to the more expensive PDA plan/data connect?
knowing AT&T..i'm assuming yes....
well the question is whether or not AT&T knows that you have an unlocked E71. I have an unlocked N95 for AT&T and they have no clue what phone I have aka I pay $15/month for unlimited data
i think it would only make sense for them to charge more money every month if you bought a phone that they subsidized. otherwise it's not logical, if they charged more for no good reason, wouldn't that be like asking you to choose another operator? :P
do you get full internet capabilities, i'e 3g etc with media maxx?? i was told by att that the $15 media plan only takes u to mobile site. was i duped in to paying $30 for att internet???
Just got mine. FOR FREE, UNLOCKED, and NO CONTRACT. Oh, its nice to be on Cincinnati Bell.
It's about time, but AT&T should've thrown out a $100 on a 2-year. That'd make it better. I'd rather pay $100 more and have no commitment.
Have had the E71 since it was launched. It replaced an E61i. 71 is much faster, with little lag. Compared to the Treo my wife had it's nicer looking, faster and easier to use.
I'll probably upgrade to the N97 when it gets affordable.
Is it true that it does not charge with USB (interface is the old USB 1.1)
and that ther is noo auto-sense for data connections to prefer wifi over 3g ?
The AT&T Nokia E71x will be running S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 i've heard. With Feature Pack 2 you have the ability to choose which access points you want to set as priority which means wi-fi first, then 3g.
I noticed the AT&T branded E71x has no front camera. So you pay more and get less? Does it get neutered in any other way? As well why does AT&T always remove the front cam on they're phones?
I had a Dash but the visuals and reboot slowness got me down. I got an iPhone 3G for Christmas, and though the visuals are much better and it's a better fit for Google Apps (which our company runs on), I really do miss the tactile keyboard of the Dash. I have always been a Nokia fan but the sleeker designs always seem to be not supplied by the US carriers. :-(
@MUSHASHI66
I have an N82, dad has the E71. The E71 is a LOT faster.
i went from the XDA Mini S (aka the HTC Wizard) to the iPhone 3G and now on the Nokia e71
iPhone of course had better simple web browsing, but e71 makes me happier :-) lol
I hope it has a better build quality than my e51.... Ha! Who am I kidding...
I hate having the same phone as someone else. it doesnt look to have a front facing camera, and has anyone seen it on?
What are the specs? maybe it doesnt use symbian ( doubt it doesnt)? what has AT&T remove?
Front-facing cam is GONE because it's designed primarily for video-calling, which AT&T doesn't support.
Newer S60 devices are well-optimized to be much, much faster than older ones. My N85 blazes with a single-core compared to my old N95's dual-core with similar clock speeds. Moreover the E71 has bits of optimizations from FP2 so it makes sense that it would be much faster than FP1 phones like the N95 or N82.
You could get an unlocked E71 from best buy for $199 right now so long as you went with TMobile as your service provider.
I had one for only a day -- great phone with super build-quality and a phenom battery life but the reception SUCKED. There's a number of posts about the E71 and the antennas. Simply holding the phone I went from 4 bars to none in seconds. Let go of the phone and it would shoot up to 4 bars again.
I was really disappointed to take it back; I really wanted to like that phone but if it couldn't keep a signal then what's the point.
your tmobile network just plain sucks than. I have had this phone since it was announce and have never once had a reception issue
@Damon:
Don't think so. Have a Shadow, Blackberry 8900, Treo 680 and Moto Razr all on Tmobile and they ALL get great reception. Might have been that particular phone but like I said, I'm not the only one with the issue. Read here: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/08/04/nokia-e71-2-reception-issues-mmm/
wow I waited for AT&T to carry it just to find out it's only for 100 less? umm.. no
Wow.... looks like it was designed in 1995.
