11.6-inch Acer Aspire One inches closer to our hearts, reality
It's very possible that we're just reading too far between the lines here, but a recent post over at macles* lines up awesomely with specifications gleaned from a recent Acer FCC filing. Basically, what we're probably looking at is a forthcoming Aspire One with an 11.6-inch panel (as opposed to the 10-inch versions available now), a 1,366 x 768 resolution and very strangely placed Ethernet and VGA ports. Furthermore, we're also told that this bugger will house an Atom Z530 CPU, Intel's SCH USW15S chipset (Poulsbo) and GMA500 integrated graphics. Oh, and there's also an extended battery option that should provide up to eight hours of life. Interested yet?

I'm interested!
I'm interested to the point of about $200, so probably, still no.
Sounds like the perfect netbook. I'm not looking for a tonne of power, and this seems to give me exactly what I need. One of those things was the screen resolution. Also, this thing has a screen smaller than a 12" screen, and appears to hit the sweet spot for screen size, since keyboard size will be limited by screen size, and the keyboard on most netbooks just isn't good enough for full-time use.
Ian - my thoughts exactly. This is an awesome machine, more a sub-notebook than a netbook. Don't expect it for less than $600 or so though.
How about we get some freaking decent drivers for that stupid GMA500 before we keep throwing it in new computers!
how about those Atheros WLAN drivers too ?
9" AAO sux balls on wifi
or how about we stop putting it in computers and start putting in a better chipset.
ignore my prev comment, i was thinking of something else
Now this is what I'm talking about. I want a netbook that it slightly larger than a 10 inch, some op par with Sony Viaos 11inch TZ. Now as long as this has decent real life battery I will be buying it.
I will make sure to not get in your way when you will buy it because in fact you WILL be buying it.
"Interested yet?"
Hell yeah. Just what I've been waiting for - a netbook with a decent screen resolution and (hopefully) not the price of the Vaio P.
Time to [finally] jump in I guess...?
But is an 11.6" machine still a netbook? ThinkPads have been 12" or so for years. This guy seems a little big for his britches.

If the components inside can be used with a hacked copy of OS X like with the MSI Wind, I'll buy it.
With a gma 500, not likley.... Same problem with dell mini 12, which I would also buy, if it could be a hackintosh
I'd tap that
Throw Windows 7 on it and never look back.
How much?
the last 30 min of knowing was like a rollercoaster where the very end just goes down hill, flies off the track and explodes in a fire stupid ending...... i cant wait till may when all the good movies come out.
And what does that have to do with this article?
Dont be an idiot and go watch "Let the right one in".
the way you describe it sounds pretty action packed tho....
The *best* part of Knowing was the "action Plane scene" (obtuse reference intentional to avoid spoiler). It blew my freaking mind...
Does anyone else find it strange that netbooks have been gradually growing over time? I mean, they started out at 7", and now they're up to 11.6"? Soon there won't be anything which sets them apart from normal laptops except worse specs!
Except smaller, lighter, better battery life and HELL of a lot cheaper than standard ultra-portables...
7 inch netbooks suck! The screen is almost unusable. I have a 10 inch netbook and it is fine for occasional use it is still too small. I love the form factor but my eee could have had a 12 inch screen in it and been the same size.
Personally I think small size is one of the defining characteristics of a netbook (along with price). I got the original eeepc when it first came out and it was near perfect for what netbooks are meant for. Anything above a 10inch screen is just a poorly spec'd laptop (in general, they can have decent specs sometimes).
I agree, I bought mine for it's small size, the 8.9" aspire one and a 9-cell batt...got the 1GB 160HD version and love it....I don't LOVE the screen resolution, but I bought it because of it's size, so I can't complain. It works for what I bought it for, a small web-connected device for emailing, running office and syncing my Bold via BT, tethering etc. (for use on the road) basically, and I love a good movie on it too. When I don't want to boot up the MBP due to limited space like a tray-table it's awesome!!..But they are growing in size!!! I guess it's up to the person's needs. I love my 8.9" and so do the ladies, they say it's a perfect fit ;-)
All kidding aside, yeah I noticed....probably would have went with the 10.1" had it been out at the time I jumped on the bandwagon, but no regrets either. Works great for me!! And doesn't set my legs on fire after 30 mins or so like a larger lappy. ;-)
Battery life, battery life, battery life. I haven't carried my power brick with me anywhere in the past 6 months, and some of these new machines boast even better batteries than mine has.
To me, that's a huge deal. I hate those frakking cables, and I love leaving mine at home.
Off topic, but I just saw Knowing.
::facepalm::
sorry but beat you to the punch
Can manufactures go back into making netbooks as they're supposed to be, and not underpowered-overpriced-laptops? 11"? 12"? What's next, 17"? 8-9" is the sweet spot. I thought 10" is small enough, but once you actually use netbooks on-the-go, 10" still feels too big, let alone 11" or higher.
I totally agree with you, but it seems we are the minority here.
I am a lot on the move for work so when it came out I bought a pimped up MSI wind with 2GBddr2, 160Gb HD, WIFI/BT etc. and gave away my backbreaking Tosh 13".
When I discovered that no matter how pimped up, the Wind was too underpowered for my needs (and that external optical drives are a pain in the testicles) I bought a Sony VAIO TT, which is OK but sometimes feels a big too.
Now I'm just waiting for the Vaio P to make it to the shores of my scandinavian homeland to get rid of the Wind (which has done a great job after all) and see if I can live just with the 2 VAIOs (the "TT" and the "P") and 2 good smartphones to take care of my mobile needs considering that most of my computer time is spent on the desktops and workstatuons that I use at home or at the office.
The strange thing is that I never much liked Sony as a PC maker.
I bought the TT only because it was the only 11 incher with decent specs and an optical drive on the market, and now it seems that I'll be obliged to pay again the Vaio tax to get the P because I can't see any equivalent alternative (apart for keeping my old trusty MSI wind)
Awesome
Hell yeah I'm interested!!
Reminds me somewhat of the 12" Powerbook... which I dearly miss.
+1
No ion platform so no go. 9400M+badaboom makes the computer so much more versatile.
for under 400$?
can AMD just release its neo platform already -_-
"Interested yet?"
Nope.
When it has all of:
1) twist/swivel screen convertible tablet
2) vendor supported/supplied Ubuntu version
3) PCI-Express Mini card slot, with 3G drivers for Ubuntu.
Then give me a call.
I hate acer note/netbooks but this one is awsome !
I'm not interested because it doesn't run OSX, the best operating system on the planet.
I call bullshit.
and you will be able to run OS X on this, it has very common hardware so ultimately some drivers will pop up (maybe?).
Or, you could switch to a nice Linux distro and get the "best OS on the planet" for this particular platform.
although "best" is deff. a subjective term, a HUGE part of it is user friendlyness...try explaining to your grandma about using menus and right clicking, rather than a huge row of icons at the bottom of the screen
True, osx is for grandma...
People who understands a little bit about computer can manage their way with linux. Which includes tons of free software and a lot of excellent features.
Yeah, maybe if no other operating systems existed.
But since Windows 7 is out for all intents and purposes, everything else is now obsolete.
Looks good. Reminds me of my old Toshiba Portege, except without the trackpoint. I wish they'd put in one instead, as well as decent-sized arrow keys. Unfortunately, the Canadian version will probably have a bilingual failboard like the first Aspire One, with a ridiculous and unnecessary key where the right half of the left shift key is supposed to be, and a bizarre upside-down return key.
Yeah and without the $2000+ price tag :)
You should be proud of it... its one of the few things making you different from the south neighbour. A bit of sophistication never hurt. Hehe im sure you can find a model without it though... You know you can use Amazon. Oh and I was used to shop my camera lenses from B&H online and ship to canada. They are the biggest electronic store in New York and they ship worldwide.
