Dell's Studio XPS laptop might be going red
The so far black-only Studio XPS laptop might soon be getting an injection of color. A "Bordeaux" (red) version of the portable was spotted at Dell's design labs, and the company told CNET an official release is currently under consideration. It isn't related to (Product) Red, however, so if you're eyeing this beaut, be sure to do it for style and not charity. Also on display at the labs were some test designs for next-generation server racks, for the fashion-minded out there needing a proper storage solution. Hit up the read link for more pics from the lab.

omg omg omg Dell's Studio XPS laptop might be going red omg omg omg
no offense to dell, but i probably wouldn't consider buying a red laptop unless it was for PRODUCT(RED). i just don't think the color works well on a laptop. just personal preference.
In addition to exclusive red coloring, you eyes will be bloodshot red from staying up all night trying to make this thing stop crashing. I work at a retailer and these things have almost a 50% return rate with failing hard drives, RAM, even screen backlighting. The quality control from Dell is TERRIBLE.
Stay clear of the Studio XPS series (and all Dells for that matter) IMO.
To Zlog:
Had my Studio XPS for weeks now- 0 problems.
I don't really like broad generalizations.
it looks brown... Dell is really getting stupid. First with that adamo POS thats only 1.2ghz and 2gb ram for 2 thousand dollars? What is Dell smoking. Stop with this whole "Fashion" crap or atleast find a middle between Fashion and good Specs.
Actually, the Specs on this one are pretty good.
Take a look. They're on par with the current gen Macbooks.
Since when have Macs become the standard for spec benchmarks? All I hear is people complain how bad the specs are on Macs (even though not true.)
I never said that the new Macbooks are the new benchmark.
But let's look at the facts: It's a reasonably fashonable laptop, 13 inches big, around the 2000 dollar mark, and made by Dell. It's inevitable that mactards and anti-mactards and everyone else who wants to fit into either category (god knows why) will compare it to Apple's darling
I've gotta say, the red version of this looks mighty tasty!
However, I'm sick of companies (all companies) calling their products pretentious colour names. 'Bordeaux'? Please, unless it actually tastes like that particular type of wine, why not just call it 'wine', or better yet, 'red'.
I agree. All computer makers should be forced to use hex color codes to describe their laptops. That way nobody can be offended or confused by these highfalutin color names. Things would be much simpler. No going to the store and facing the embarrassing task of asking for a 'bordeaux' laptop! Instead, you'd simply ask if they have a dell studio xps available in 660033. No confusion, no having to fear looking like a snob simply because you want a tasty looking red laptop!
Sir, I do believe that was sarcasm.
something clever, it would probably make a lot more sense to label them according to the most prominent Pantone swatch used, no RGB hex codes. I'm quite comfortable with the vague "cranberry red", "elephant tusk white", "black black" and such.
How's about instead of introducing a new color, Dell gets their act together and fixes that heating issue so that the Studio XPS series can actually start gaining momentum?
Not just the heat issues, but the rampant build quality defects that are plaguing the current shipments
No problems with build quality here, but it does get a little toasty. Though I haven't actually seen any overheating issues or felt any discomfort because of it.
13",similar specs as white MacBook . Costs same . So for same price would u trust dell over apple,.??
The build quality is closer to the new MacBook, if you want to compare to the old one, use the m1330
Remind me. This article discusses Dell now producing laptops with a red colour and you're talking about an Apple laptop, why?
On topic, I'd prefer it if the laptop was a real (Product)Red system and the case provided a matte finish, but aside from that I'd be quite happy to buy a laptop in this colour. It's relatively stylish and, to be honest, I used to rather like the colours that Voodoo used to sell their laptops in. Black, grey and white are rather dull colours, although anything else is likely to fall into the love/hate categories.
XPS studio actually surpasses Macs spec. XPS' dual GPU works together like SLI and can switch between GPU on the fly. Mac can only use one GPU at a time and you have to log out to switch between the GPUs.
Gpu???I forgot most important thing,. Apple killed by the gpu!!!come in ted, that's the biggest thing customers look for when buying 13" laptop the gpu,.!!!!!!!LOL
@ shank
Hell ya GPU. I have a 10inch tablet PC (TC1100) that I use for drawing and some light 3D during my travel. 13 inch and GPU gives me more 3D power for heavier scene and more screen space, but light enough to be able to carry with me everyday...14 inch is too big to carry everyday, let alone 17 inch. If I want power I can use my works 24inch home station. Dell's Studio XPS 13 are rocket pocket.
next generation server racks? the current standard has been in use for a long time, if not the beginning, and i doubt it's going to change any time soon. there's already way too much equipment built around the current standard (unless they were compatible somehow...)
I would just buy macbook if price is same, I mean you can have two OS and better look hardware. They should price it $100 cheaper, or make it unibody laptop.
I got mine for about £200 cheaper with 4 gigs of DDR3 ram, 250Gb Hdd, tv tuner, backlighting, better GPU than the Macbook, and of course a screen leaps and bounds ahead of the Macbooks.
I'm probably a freak of nature for doing this but....
I actually switched from a MacBook Pro to a Studio XPS 16"
Here's why:
MacBook Pro = beautiful looking body with semi-current parts $2,700+
Studio XPS = ho-hum body with 1080p OLED, Blu-ray, 8GB Ram $2,000
More stuff for less dough.
You do the math...
Windows, OS X it's all the same to me... just gimmie the goods and don't gauge me for the privilege of showing off a Logo.
And don't even get me started on the Unibody's new Trackpad... who's idea was that!!!!!
btw it's not a 1080p OLED. It's either white LED backlit or RGBLED backlit
The O stands for Oh My God that RGBLED screen is a totally rad.
OLED = Oh My God that RGBLED screen is a totally rad LED
I always wondered what that stood for. Now I just need to figure out the RBGLED and LED parts.
And while we're at it, how about AMOLED?
who pissed that thing off. it
who pissed that thing off. it looks mad. will it eat me?
Just because it isn't made of aluminum and overpriced doesn't mean it deserves criticism.
I think it kinda make sense to build more colorful, fashionable laptops, because specs are evolving at such a fast pace, that after a year or less, it's already obsolete. So, after awhile, you'd better be stuck with a fashionable obsolete laptop, than a boring grey obsolete laptop.
Meh.. I want to like the Studio XPS notebooks.. really. There's just something off about the design. Given that they're very similar specs as the current Macbooks for just about the same amount of money, I might actually get my first Apple machine. Except I'd be putting Windows on it, so.. I dunno; maybe that defeats the whole purpose.
Man.. both the black and the red Studio XPS's look great!
Can't wait to get mine this summer.
wow. that's lid's pretty shiny.
i can see the photographer really easily.
my ocd would require a cleaning cloth to be included with the purchase; please.
Its a shame that when you open the monitor it covers the only exhaust port and the heat discolors the screens within days...
I've been using it for over a month, no discolouration here. ;)
I'm willing to let them keep the shuny exterior if they're willing to return to the matte screen, at least as an option. Otherwise, no deal.
BTW, shiny plastic is very hard to clean and therefore use of it is a really bad design decision, for any component that will be affected by dust or hands.
Spot on. One thing that makes me consider perhaps the Studio 15 or 13" Macbook is the fact that glossy plastics SCRATCH, and do so with ease. Go to your local Best Buy and take a look at all the glossy HP notebooks or white Macbooks. They are scratched and smudged to no end. Is it REALLY that much of a task for designers to come up with a notebook design that isn't a chore and nigh impossible to keep in good condition? Shiny plastics are a NO!
I like that particular shade of red
