VAIO P spec bumps coming?
According to the folks over at Sony Insider, Sony might have something more than just color changes up its sleeve when it comes to forthcoming variations on the VAIO P. Supposedly, the company has a new series of the diminutive laptop in the pipeline numbered 700 (as opposed to the current 500 line), which SI says looks just like a typical Sony scheme for spec refreshes. Inside the new digits there's a designation for upcoming colors, but the existence of a fresh starting point as well as an additional "Q" in the mix might also mean that there are legitimate hardware changes happening as well. At this point this is just speculation, and it certainly wouldn't surprise anyone if Sony were to bump some of the internals of the netbook... er, ultraportable, but it would likely be a welcome change. nvidia 9400m inside and i buy one no matter what it costs.
i need dxva decoding :)
1080p playin on dat baby yummy...
GMA500 has DxVA support, with examples of -P's already running 720p and 1080p in MPC hc
mmm...VAIO P...
the screen is too small and weird...8 inch?16:9?
and the resolution is too high...
so if u wanna play this kind of thing for a long time...
Be careful on your eyes...it'll be sore...
i love its appearance, anyway.
If you think 8'' inch is too small then I want to know what you think is large.
The VAIO P is not perfect, but it can be. Here is what they need to do:
I would buy it if the screen is optimized for 1024 by 768. This to me is ideal to run most of the Windows applications. The form factor is perfect - the keyboard size and the size and dimension of the computer hardware. I would love to see them make the screen about 1 inch wider since there is a lot of unused space around the screen. This will mean that the "MOTION EYE" text will have to be removed; maybe call it "LENS". If they make these changes, I am sold. The only other thing I would love is for a faster processor, maybe 1.6 GHz.
Conclusion: The VAIO P is nearly great. They need to make the changes above. Now if Sony want's to sell boatloads of these, they will have to find a way to reduce the price by $200: Thus, price it from $699 and up.
umm why do you want the resolution reduced? and also you realise that they sell them in both 1.6Ghz and 1.8Ghz flavours right?
and this new change... could but prob isnt the new 2.0ghz atom
A price drop would also be good. Like the sleekness. Price is just scary.
There is probaly some Sony-tax included though 1000 usd/euro for a laptop with a carbon casing, proper CPU, SDD, proper screen and not to forget a keyboard isn´t that bad. I fail to understand why people keep comparing it to an avarage netbook if you just pay attention to the specs it isnt priced that bad. To me it´s like comparing a low-end Dell with their high-end line, the outside might be grey and dull but what´s below the hood is obviously different. That said I can´t wait to buy one, I would love to replace my 13 inch laptop with something smaller which still lets me type properly on it. Shame Sony doesn´t know where the Netherlands is :/
People are comparing it to the new netbooks because the netbooks are faster. Half the price and better performance, it shouldn't be that way.
stereo speakers, 2.0ghz Atom, matte black color, centered webcam...then I would be happy
agreed. decent video playback is a must. Good candidate for OnLive crapbox running superior games as long as it can process videos at full screen resolution.
Who is this aimed at? Specs cant be that good, widescreen won't be great for viewing websites.... I dont get it.
rotate screen 90 degrees and...
Us professionals who travel a lot, especially with the built in 3g modem it's perfect - I've managed to replace my desk with a beach quite a few times now - otherwise, plain/train journeys. When you travel as much as I do - a small, light functional laptop is a must - this is just fantastic! Much needed spec boost though.
Put on XP, Vista drags it down to the point of being useless.
Pretty obvious you are not an owner then!! Vista may be a tad slower than XP or W7, but my Vaio P is far from useless. I won't go through the reasons why it is a great, if expensive, machine but I am very happy with it. I don't know what kind of computing power you need or expect from a netbook but it sound like what you want has yet to be built!
The visita is bad and slow card was old a year ago....
there is nothing wrong with vista, get over it already
It sure is bad on a 1.2 GHz processor (or w/e this thing is running.)
I am a fan of Vista too, but only on a machine that can run it properly. The Vaio P is twice as expensive as any of the new netbooks, but runs things MUCH slower. Therefore it is not a good value.
I want to like it, but right now I just can't do it.
But it doesn't run "MUCH slower" as you put it. I use one every day and am not considered a patient person...it's really not that bad at all! As for comparing to other netbooks, of course, the build quality in the Sony leaves the others dead. The keyboard is great, the screen res blows all the others away. Yes, some are faster (ones that run XP!) but in the real world this is hardly noticeable. If you really want you can put XP or 7 on it. I like Vista, it works for me. I reckon the vast majority of P users are happy with it too. Different strokes I guess but saying Vista drags it down to near useless shows lack of knowledge
I would get one in a heartbeat if they got rid of the GMA500 or actually had linux drivers for it. The widescreen is fantastic if you have an IM client buddylist open on the side + twitter + a webpage.
This Vaio P is another gizmo I would happily buy if I could first see one in a real brick and mortar store.
Unfortunately Sony does'nt seem much interested in marketing their stuff in scandinavia.
To buy my Vaio TT I had to trek south to Germany
This just might be what most of us are waiting for.. 1.33 just sounds too slow :] (although its probably not that different if they release the 1.6 version now.. haha)
Doubt the price will drop.. but if it does, I might be sucked in easily :/
This VAIO is sponsored by the letter 'Q', also the letter 'P'.
Any actual specs?
I really hope they add a backlit keyboard.
Whats conciderd good spec for a used laptop at a decent price? Cause i want to play decent non demanding games, but i dont think a netbook could even handle it. And i dont want to spend over 500$ for the laptop, if that. So whats a good used laptop with decent specs?
Look for something with a mobile graphics card like an 8600M GS. An 8400M won't cut it for most games. 2gb of RAM in a lappy that is going to do some light gaming is preferred. http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html this chart could be useful to you.

Who cares. just tell me when i can get an hp mini 2140 with hd display.
Uhh since last month dumbass. I just configured one after finding a website that imports the higher end Vaio P's fully loaded for 1.6k. A fully loaded HP 2140 with HD screen costs about 1-1.2k.

Just configured, in my cart and ready to order. Quit being a jackass. Also per Windows licensing agreements no netbook manufacturer is allowed to load 2gb of ram into the computer without putting Vista on it. Just peal the sticker off and downgrade when you get it.
They've been offering 1.6 Ghz in Japan. I assume it'll probably be the same.
They've been offering a 1.86 model since launch in Japan dude. Get with the program.
