Dell targets school crowd with Latitude 2100 Welch laptop?
Looks like Dell's going for the back-to-school crowd, if this leak is to be believed. According to Gizmodo, the Latitude 2100 "Welch" is a 10.1-inch netbook with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, up to 2GB RAM, and an optional SSD drive, all under three pounds. It's also reportedly equipped with three USB ports, SD/MMC slot, 802.11 a/g/n, Bluetooth, an ethernet port, options for three and six cell batteries, and maybe touchscreen. The best part? Color options include School Bus Orange, Blue Ribbon, Red Apple, and what we can only assume is Chalkboard Black. If the report pans out, look for these around May 2009, just in time for summer vacation.

Yay, more netbooks!
802.11 a/g/n? a? Really? Who uses a at all?
My old high school actually
the library at my college uses a..
What happened to 802.11b?
nobody uses 'b'
Why isnt "netbook" used to describe this when thats obviously what it is.
This looks very doubtful, they already have the Dell Mini 10.
They have multiple 13", 15" and 17" laptops I don't think releasing another 10" netbook is going to matter, and they don't use the word netbook because of copyright laws.
No i mean Engadget. Why didnt engadget term this laptop a netbook, because thats what its obviously is. They used it in an article about the Vaio P just a couple of days ago.
Isn't Welch a brand of children's grape juice?
yep, and their juice is from concentrate. Something that dell could have done a little more when it made this netbook. Seriously, why not just the get the last gen dell netbook, it is already cheap and widely available. There is really no need for this product, but Dell obviously see a market.
No, it's the nationality for people who have lived down mines for millions of years.
haha it looks like a plastic brick, just like other Window$ notebooks
Yes....[/sarcastic] just like your $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$Apple$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ computer. Where it's so expensive you can only pay with gold bars.
I wonder if putting an "i" in front of your name like so many people here do makes you FEEL cool.... Cause it makes you look like a douche. Just so you know. Kinda like those dudes that wear glittery shirts... They probably feel cool, and their hair gel rockin friends all do it to, so they don't think there's anything wrong with it... but there is.
oh and you are welcome for letting you know you look like a douche.
Successful troll is successful
I don't get it, Latitudes are business laptops, and the Inspiron Minis are perfectly fine for students
maybe they are aiming at education customers like schools looking for cheap PCs
I am guessing it may be more robust and able to stand up to the abuse that a youngster would put it through than an Inspiron Mini, since it is being targeted at the school age demographic. (keycap retention, dropped more often, and such)
School buses aren't orange...and neither is that netbook.
exactly what I thought.
thank you
And chalkboards aren't black.
oh no, redirect to gizmodo, and not just gizmodo, i.gizmodo
poopie
Hang on... so all Latitude E series, have the 9-cell battery stick out a little bit, straight... and now with this one, it sticks out complete and put the laptop in a stupid angle....?!?!
red apple?
is that a lawsuit i hear coming?
Nope. Apple's patent is for white, not red.
School Bus ORANGE = FAIL
Why does it look so thick?, or is it just me?
That's what she said.
*flee*
Some English teachers at my high school applied for grants to get eeePC's, they're cheap and perfect for in-class work when needed...
Is it my eyes or my lcd screen? the base/bottom cover seem like 1994 first Dell Latitude...may be it's cuz i just finished eating Chinese rice and chicken wings..chickens kind of make my vision impaired...
My high school gave everybody that enrolled after me a new MacBook. They keep it for four years then I guess they throw it away or something because what can you do with a 4-year-old laptop. Anyway, they could've done a lot better with something cheap like this is/should be instead of expensive Apple. Such a waste of money.
So it's code named "Welch", and they don't have a purple one? Pretty dumb, Dell marketing dudes.
no use, all those schools on 'TIGHT BUDGET' actually spent huge on macbook when they can.
They are many reasons why Dell would do this. I used to work at Dell in the business division - and the most likely reason for doing this is why they have done everything - to give a better built, better supported option for business customers that demand something from a consumer line. For instance - in the precision line they didn't have a 17" for a while when 17" were coming around in the consumer line. Finally, Precision came out with one because the business line and the consumer line are becoming increasingly blurred. However, in business they want better support, better warranty, better materials, etc. So, I'm guessing this is probably going to have a sturdier chassis and US based tech support, etc. It makes sense for Dell when you know how they work.
On the subject of School buses, I hate those Stop Signs (or Signes d'Arrêt for dose in Québec hoo would tink it a umiliation to ave de henglish in de province of Québec[insert French-Canadian accent here]) on school buses. I say children should either learn to look both ways before they cross, obey traffic laws and the like, or get run over. Stupid children should have to learn the hard way. But I guess it's not their fault, it's the parents and teachers who don't teach the kids these things. You wonder why the world is getting stupider.
You know, I think you could be on to something.
Could be a form of population control kinda like natural selection.
i think they could probably sell more if they sold it in school colors or with university logos... then again
That'd be funny... University of Santa Cruz has a banana slug as its mascot, hahaha. Imagine a yellow slug imprinted on your laptop xD
Regardless of the fact that school buses are yellow and not orange, that's a hot color. I really wish more laptops (and phones, Goddammit!) were available in bright-ass PM Yellow. I totally would have gotten my S10 in yellow if they had offered it. I went with blue instead, which is my second favorite.
Sorry, but those are ugly as hell. Why is the rear of it so big for it not to have an optical drive? Dell, please take these back to the drawing board, copy the Adamo style, Macbook or Voodoo. There is no reason for any netbook maker to have pieces of junk especially with low energy, low profile components.
These certainly have application in a business environment. We are in the beginning stages of deploying a new application delivery system and netbooks are certainly an item on the list as a slightly cheaper alternative to a thin client that will allow users to bring the device home with them to work, too. It's nice to see an enterprise class option.
