Dell finally adds 720p LCD option to Inspiron Mini 10
So far as we can tell, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 was supposed to have a 720p screen option from day one, but after the ridiculously weird launch, we're not at all shocked to see that said selection is just now being offered. Starting right about now, prospective Mini 10 buyers can upgrade that stock 1,024 x 576 display to one with a native 1,366 x 768 resolution, or plenty to watch bona fide 720p content. The pain? Just $35 -- but you'll have to keep waiting if you're looking for inbuilt GPS, a TV tuner or a certificate of authenticity autographed by this guy.

This looks VERY tempting.
Ill take two!
I have TWO eyes, DUH!
Not available yet in Canada.
I had soo been looking forward to this, until they had to go and make the memory all integrated.
yeah i am with you, until they make the ram upgradeable i will be holding out myself.
The little things in life just keep getting better
Apparently at the expense of the "big things in life"
Nice! At that price, I'd want one of those things...
Good price point. Now make the RAM upgradable and I'm sold.
Uh, sir, the Ram IS user upgradable.
No, it's not. Do your research, Bro.
Dont tase me, Bro!
Indeed Bro.
Still waiting for:
Built-in TV Tuner - for Windows Media Center on the go!
Built-in GPS - the future is in location-aware services
2GB RAM - I'd really want 4GB of RAM, but 2GB is fine (and yes, I realize that 4GB is overkill for a netbook, but RAM is cheap, so why not?)
nVidia Geforce 9400M - Windows Vista/7 really sucks without it. Windows XP is showing it's age. Sticking with gimp Intel integrated graphics just doesn't appeal to me.
All for $500-$600
Then I'll take the plunge. Until then, I'll be content with what I have (realizing, it could be years before all of those are fulfilled)
The 2GB issue is Microsoft's fault re: licencing of XP for netbooks.
You can get 2GB preinstalled on the Ubuntu Mini 9 models, but not on the Windows ones.
That said, a 2GB stick is like $20 from Newegg, and it's not that difficult of an upgrade.
You can't upgrade the ram in mini 10.
ION. Dual-core Atom. 2GB. Sold. I don't even give a shit about the screen resolution, I prefer it lower on these tiny screens so I can see what the hell I'm doing.
Dell is feeling the heat from the HP 2140 which is also soon getting its higher res screen.
Yea i wish that would frickin come out soon, that's the one i've been waiting for since they announced it!
i am not sure that this the correct reasoning. I think it is more to do with a supply factor affecting all on the 720p screen. If you said t hat you would expect that HP will soon have a 720p screen, I would agree.
only add $35? that's pretty good.
1366x768 isn't 720p, it's 768p
idiot.
look at any 720P LCD HDTV, they use 1366x768, I'm not certain of the reason but it's not Dell's choosing, but hey more pixels, don't complain
for $35 they should take off the other option
wow, made yourself look like a douchebag. 768p lol.
just so you guys know...he's right...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p
"720p has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, a vertical resolution of 720 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1280 pixels"
the use of 768 is because its a value that scales to 720 and 1080 easily. a true 720 monitor will be exactly 720 pixels tall.
@v3xx, iBalla
idiot/wow, made yourself look like a douchebag
LOL
While technically it is 768p, when most people refer to a screen as having a resolution of 720p they mean it can do at *least* 720p. 720p is the minimum, and as long as you meet/exceed this then you've got a high definition screen.
I personally don't think it's incorrect to call it 768p or 720p, but the latter works for simplicity.
Once the better video cards come out (nVidia, etc), that's going to be a sweet little machine.
What's with all the Dell posts? I mean, every time I come here, it's Dell this, Dell that. Come on, Engadget, how much is Dell paying you to just promote their ware?
I'd just like to say in advance, don't feed the troll.
Dell's dominant market share of computer sales at least partly warrants the coverage.
The same can't be said of the manufacturer you fap to. A manufacturer who only really dominates the DAP industry but gets covered disproportionately in other forays where they're not even close.
Hmmm, Dell is worth 18 billion and Apple is worth 93 billion. So why again, are we covering Dell so much?
Obvious troll is obvious.
And stupid as cowdung.
It's Engadget.com... go to TUAW to fap to Apple.
Last time I checked, market share != market value.
He was talking about market SHARE.
Please, that's not 720p. What a headline.
That's right! It's better than 720p!
Umm... 768 > 720, so i'm not quite sure what you could mean...
OK, then. Go ahead & get a "real" 720p screen that has that exact native res & enjoy your lost 48 pixels in horizontal resolution, dummy.
Its 720 VERTICAL. 1280 x 720 is 1280 HORIZONTAL and 720 VERTICAL. Which should be obvious from the fact that it is wider than it is high. C'mon. If you're going to insult somebody, get your shit right.
What guy?
About bloody time too!
Kudos to Dell for keepin' it matte and affordable. And being the first (not counting the m912, since it was too sucky).
BS. Their focus is on these toys noone wants, yet this 10" laptop now has the res of my 13.3 XPS M1330. I want higher res on my 1330, bring it DELL!!!
Perhaps you don't want it, but the netbook segment is the fastest growing segment in laptop sales. I was actually waiting for this announcement and I'm also waiting on the hp 2140 as well.
Engadget, please no more Dell posts. We'd rather know more about the Macbook netbook.
You mean the Air?
And by "we", you mean just you right?
I just hate how it only has a 3 cell battery.
6 cell option is coming.
my macbook res feels woefully inadequate
damnit... if only the chipset was the GMA950, i would totally jump on this...
it wouldve make a great hackintosh
Nice! 768 is much more usable, both for web pages and games.
Nice to see a laptop resolution on a netbook. 35$ is great too.
35$ makes this a complete no-brainer. The higher resolution makes *everything* you do so much more comfortable...
Can the Mini10 playback 720p content? I know my Mini9 cannot, without dropping frames. Even so, it would be nice to have the extra bit a real-estate.
I think for a 10 inches screen, watching normal dvdrip is quite ok. 720p is overkill unless you plug it on a bigger screen. On my Dell 30 incher, I admit 720p is the sweet spot for good viewing experience without pixelisation.
Kinda missed the point there Canada...
I *assume* that since this has a regular 5400rpm drive, rather than the SSD in the Mini 9, that it should handle streaming 720p content just fine. But I'm sure somebody over at http://www.mydellmini.com could tell you.
Still want one, still waiting for the price to come down a bit more...
The $35 upgrade seems worthwhile.
1GB of RAM? FAIL.
At this point, I cannot buy this computer until it AT LEAST has a GMA 950 (Yes, I said it). The GMA 500 can barely play a DVD and having it power a 720p screen is just a plain shame. Hopefully they get the refresh of the Dell Mini 12 right.
So, who is "this guy"? The link ends up at an empty page in every browser I use.
Little by little Dell is adding features they advertised the Mini 10 would have.
I'm still waiting for them to add
GPS
2GB RAM
TV Tuner
WWAN
6-Cell battery
Fingerprint reader
A newer OS than Windows XP. XP is OK, but it's showing its age and an upgrade is needed.
So whether they add a fingerprint reader and a new OS remains to be seen. But I definitely won't buy until they at least add the other five features.
And Dell needs better graphics in the Mini 10, too. So along with others, I'll be keeping an eye out for that, as well.
Not convinced. Go to Dell and configure the system to your liking. If you're like me and you pick the 1.6GHz processor and the 720p screen, and so forth, you'll quickly end up at around $550. Since you can get a 13" Dell Studio laptop with more memory, a much better processor, etc for around $640 or maybe $90 more... I'm not sure the pricing on this thing is right yet. I'd be waiting for it to drop at least $50. $35 for the extra rez might not seem like much, but it should really just be included for free...
The guy has gone
Get back to me when it's got a real battery for the portability netbooks are supposed to epitomize.
WTF? The Mini 10's maximun RAM is a paltry 1GB?? Get with it Dell! This is the 21st century! How in the hell am I supposed to run Windows 7 with just 1GB of RAM??
close but no cigar
pretty sweet option, i saw the new sony netbook at staples the other day, definitely resolution overdone (rediculous)
but 1366 sounds ever so sweet, now lets get that 9400 and dual core atom in there.
AND I WILL BE SATISFIED
TISK TISK TISK :D
