Dell finally adds 720p LCD option to Inspiron Mini 10
So far as we can tell, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 was supposed to have a 720p screen option from day one, but after the ridiculously weird launch, we're not at all shocked to see that said selection is just now being offered. Starting right about now, prospective Mini 10 buyers can upgrade that stock 1,024 x 576 display to one with a native 1,366 x 768 resolution, or plenty to watch bona fide 720p content. The pain? Just $35 -- but you'll have to keep waiting if you're looking for inbuilt GPS, a TV tuner or a certificate of authenticity autographed by this guy.

Not available yet in Canada.
Ignofibininious @ Mar 30th 2009 5:59PM
I had soo been looking forward to this, until they had to go and make the memory all integrated.
Todd @ Mar 30th 2009 9:33PM
yeah i am with you, until they make the ram upgradeable i will be holding out myself.
arcticpenguins @ Mar 30th 2009 5:59PM
The little things in life just keep getting better
KilgoreTrout @ Mar 30th 2009 7:28PM
Apparently at the expense of the "big things in life"
Leo B @ Mar 30th 2009 6:04PM
Nice! At that price, I'd want one of those things...
Khattab @ Mar 30th 2009 6:07PM
Good price point. Now make the RAM upgradable and I'm sold.
nicholas black @ Mar 30th 2009 6:47PM
Uh, sir, the Ram IS user upgradable.
Khattab @ Mar 30th 2009 7:06PM
No, it's not. Do your research, Bro.

Dont tase me, Bro!

Still waiting for:
Built-in TV Tuner - for Windows Media Center on the go!
Built-in GPS - the future is in location-aware services
2GB RAM - I'd really want 4GB of RAM, but 2GB is fine (and yes, I realize that 4GB is overkill for a netbook, but RAM is cheap, so why not?)
nVidia Geforce 9400M - Windows Vista/7 really sucks without it. Windows XP is showing it's age. Sticking with gimp Intel integrated graphics just doesn't appeal to me.
All for $500-$600
Then I'll take the plunge. Until then, I'll be content with what I have (realizing, it could be years before all of those are fulfilled)
slab @ Mar 30th 2009 6:24PM
The 2GB issue is Microsoft's fault re: licencing of XP for netbooks.
You can get 2GB preinstalled on the Ubuntu Mini 9 models, but not on the Windows ones.
That said, a 2GB stick is like $20 from Newegg, and it's not that difficult of an upgrade.
mgl0009 @ Mar 30th 2009 6:33PM
You can't upgrade the ram in mini 10.
AVG @ Mar 30th 2009 9:03PM
ION. Dual-core Atom. 2GB. Sold. I don't even give a shit about the screen resolution, I prefer it lower on these tiny screens so I can see what the hell I'm doing.
Jayayess1190 @ Mar 30th 2009 6:09PM
Dell is feeling the heat from the HP 2140 which is also soon getting its higher res screen.
Richard Glitter @ Mar 30th 2009 7:54PM
Yea i wish that would frickin come out soon, that's the one i've been waiting for since they announced it!
kccboy2004 @ Mar 30th 2009 7:56PM
i am not sure that this the correct reasoning. I think it is more to do with a supply factor affecting all on the 720p screen. If you said t hat you would expect that HP will soon have a 720p screen, I would agree.
htd @ Mar 30th 2009 6:10PM
only add $35? that's pretty good.
1366x768 isn't 720p, it's 768p
v3xx @ Mar 30th 2009 6:43PM
idiot.
JohnTitor @ Mar 30th 2009 7:09PM
look at any 720P LCD HDTV, they use 1366x768, I'm not certain of the reason but it's not Dell's choosing, but hey more pixels, don't complain
for $35 they should take off the other option
iBalla @ Mar 30th 2009 7:23PM
wow, made yourself look like a douchebag. 768p lol.
rkls @ Mar 30th 2009 7:38PM
just so you guys know...he's right...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p
"720p has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, a vertical resolution of 720 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1280 pixels"
the use of 768 is because its a value that scales to 720 and 1080 easily. a true 720 monitor will be exactly 720 pixels tall.
Wolfticket @ Mar 30th 2009 8:22PM
@v3xx, iBalla
idiot/wow, made yourself look like a douchebag
LOL
Daza @ Mar 30th 2009 9:14PM
While technically it is 768p, when most people refer to a screen as having a resolution of 720p they mean it can do at *least* 720p. 720p is the minimum, and as long as you meet/exceed this then you've got a high definition screen.
I personally don't think it's incorrect to call it 768p or 720p, but the latter works for simplicity.
Nate @ Mar 30th 2009 6:26PM
Once the better video cards come out (nVidia, etc), that's going to be a sweet little machine.
Paul A. Chapel @ Mar 30th 2009 6:22PM
What's with all the Dell posts? I mean, every time I come here, it's Dell this, Dell that. Come on, Engadget, how much is Dell paying you to just promote their ware?
RioRyan @ Mar 30th 2009 6:32PM
I'd just like to say in advance, don't feed the troll.
The Dude @ Mar 30th 2009 6:34PM
Dell's dominant market share of computer sales at least partly warrants the coverage.
The same can't be said of the manufacturer you fap to. A manufacturer who only really dominates the DAP industry but gets covered disproportionately in other forays where they're not even close.
Paul A. Chapel @ Mar 30th 2009 6:47PM
Hmmm, Dell is worth 18 billion and Apple is worth 93 billion. So why again, are we covering Dell so much?
L @ Mar 30th 2009 6:53PM
Obvious troll is obvious.
And stupid as cowdung.
Matt @ Mar 30th 2009 6:56PM
It's Engadget.com... go to TUAW to fap to Apple.
Ruben @ Mar 30th 2009 7:48PM
Last time I checked, market share != market value.
He was talking about market SHARE.
sr @ Mar 30th 2009 6:32PM
Please, that's not 720p. What a headline.
Matt @ Mar 30th 2009 6:57PM
That's right! It's better than 720p!
Richard Glitter @ Mar 30th 2009 7:54PM
Umm... 768 > 720, so i'm not quite sure what you could mean...
peestandingup @ Mar 30th 2009 9:42PM
OK, then. Go ahead & get a "real" 720p screen that has that exact native res & enjoy your lost 48 pixels in horizontal resolution, dummy.
Fanfoot @ Mar 31st 2009 12:37AM
Its 720 VERTICAL. 1280 x 720 is 1280 HORIZONTAL and 720 VERTICAL. Which should be obvious from the fact that it is wider than it is high. C'mon. If you're going to insult somebody, get your shit right.
Ross @ Mar 30th 2009 6:33PM
What guy?
Buis @ Mar 30th 2009 6:36PM
About bloody time too!
Kudos to Dell for keepin' it matte and affordable. And being the first (not counting the m912, since it was too sucky).
Jonyah @ Mar 30th 2009 6:37PM
BS. Their focus is on these toys noone wants, yet this 10" laptop now has the res of my 13.3 XPS M1330. I want higher res on my 1330, bring it DELL!!!
Al @ Mar 30th 2009 11:19PM
Perhaps you don't want it, but the netbook segment is the fastest growing segment in laptop sales. I was actually waiting for this announcement and I'm also waiting on the hp 2140 as well.
iKurt Mark III @ Mar 30th 2009 6:43PM
Engadget, please no more Dell posts. We'd rather know more about the Macbook netbook.

And by "we", you mean just you right?
