It didn't take long for Echostar to turn its
ViP 922 SlingLoaded DVR for DISH into a tru2way powered HD DVR for cable viewers ready to placeshift live and prerecorded TV, and now we've got a glimpse of what it will look like. The
specs show off a 1TB hard drive ripped from its still-yet-to-launch predecessor, but new for the T2200S is a backlit capacitive touch control mounted up front, while that
no numbers required touch remote the 922 flashed at CES is so far missing from the mix. It'll be at least Q4 before these go into production, but you can believe Echostar is pitching them to all willing to listen at Cable Show '09 this week, while interested customers are being advised to contact their cable provider and let 'em know they want a piece.
Like Cox will ever let me buy that
With any luck I'd never have to leave my house.
Seems like a cool device, but why a cable technology, on a Dish receiver? Maybe Echostar will release this to consumers so that they can put their operator's CableCARD in?
Why tru2way? I would love a Sling-enabled HD DVR for FiOS... And 1TB of storage.
Boys and girls, the key word here is tru2way which does indeed mean cablecard! Cox or any other cable company can NOT deny usage of a box like this, doing so would be illegal.
Sure, but you've also got to be able to _buy it_. If Echostar won't sell it to you...
Doesn't matter one hoot if the cable companies are allowed to deny usage of it or not, because they simply don't care about the regulations. Time Warner will not let you get their complete channel lineup with CableCard - they intentionally cripple it to get you to rent their terrible box. I called and complained and they didn't so I filed a complaint with the FCC which did nothing. Eventually they might get a slap on the wrist from the FCC and pay some small fine, but full service with CableCard seems to still be years behind the devices.
I assume you're talking about channels they are broadcasting using Switched Digital Video or SDV. Which a current-model Tivo or a cable card equipped TV won't be able to tune in. In THEORY, you should be able to tune such things with a tru2way box, assuming your provider has rolled out tru2way compatibility like they promised.
I wonder if Sony has a bunch of money coming from cable companies that failed to make their commitments to tru2way deployments...
Are there any good HD DVRs that work with Cox cable and dont charge a monthly fee? Does that exist?
If you're willing to pay $800, sure.
You guys are all idiots! This is a Dish only rcvr! Why would dish let any other company have this! you cant rent a direct tv box and use it for comcast of dish!!!! Come on.....this box is friggin cool!!! A 1tb of storage!?!?! Are you serious! that is freaking awesome! and a touch remote!
Reread the article. Slowly.
Get it?
Echostar is not Dish. Echostar makes boxes for Dish.
That is all.
hahaha... what a tard
Interesting stuff, if priced right
Why should I have to call my cable provider? Slap a cablecard slot on there and off we go. When will these builders start to figure this out?
cool
Anything's better than Comcast's Motorola 160 GB DVR with horrible 1990's on screen guide.
^^^ So darn true. In all honesty, I would love to buy a Moxi right now. But if I use a cablecard, Comcast won't let me access On Demand. :( I need them free programming options.
Sooo Tivo, when will we see a tru2way series 4 HD unit from you? Yea, keep standing still waiting and watch as the tech world passes you by. Just sayin...
