Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters now available for under $20
Got a Mini DisplayPort equipped laptop or video card and need to connect it to something... um, not Mini DisplayPort? If you've got a crisp Andrew Jackson, then Monoprice has an adapter for you with HDMI, DVI and VGA outs, all of which are now shipping for $14.25 and up. Unless you don't like saving money, nor enjoy your peripherals actually working with your new machine, it'll be hard to find a problem with this.

Thank the good lord for Monoprice.com...
My favorite place!!
and on the 8th day God created Monoprice
Way to stick it to Apple!
i order stuff from monoprice just because it's so cheap. Who really needs seven 100' ethernet cables? Six USB extenders?
it's just fun to order from them! nothing makes me happier than an email from marisela.ortega or amber.guerra!
or bernardina.urena or melanie.rollins
ENGADGET READERS + MONOPRICE.COM =
* = LOVE
incompatibilities? sounds like an apple problem.
Yay!
I second that, thank you monoprice!
This is quite nice. Don't get me wrong - i'm not looking a gifthorse in the mouth, but what I'd really like is a line of mini-dp to HDMI / DVI / VGA cables. i.e. instead of hanging a clunky dongle off the side of my macbook, it's just one long cable with a different connector on either end. I have a DVI->HDMI cable that is exactly that right now.
Yup, someone got the woring picture or the wrong spec here... this is DVI, not HDMI...
Has the picture changed? That is clearly an HDMI port.
That's a strange looking HDMI jack.
Yea, that looks more like a DVI port...
engadget never admits to mistakes, they just cover them up as they go along.. but the tubes are watching!

@Sax65
Engadget had a DVI up earlier. They changed it.
I should have taken a screen shot... It was a DVI connector. They fixed it without a note.
I suspect that they did not admit it so those who pointed it out would look foolish.
Didn't Monoprice start selling these a few months back?
I think this story is about the three new ones that have some cable between them.
***EDIT***
Monoprice has had DP->HDMI/DVI/VGA
Now they have MINI DP.
Nope. Announced December 16, 2008 and started shipping early this month (though I believe it sold out almost immediately). Old news.

no, they just kept pushing them back...
i love monoprice, i have been using them for years, best deals and service ever.
No excuses.
id just like to point out that i find it at least the tiniest bit funny that the title says "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI" and the picture is of Mini DisplayPort to DVI. i know i know, HDMI and DVI share the same digital video signal and blahdy blahdy blah....im just saying i thought it was a little funny. that is all.
But, HDMI and DVI share the same digital video signal.
i just discovered this place today and ordered a 100 foot cat6 cable from them for 14 bucks. also when choosing shipping i noticed they do pick up and they're less than 5 minutes from my house. i cant believe a jewel like this was hidden for so long. i still have an hdmi cable and mini dvi-hdmi cable to buy. both half the price of anything els i've found. although i wish i could find a toslink to rca cable if one even exists.
ok. sorry for the creepily quick response but a few quick points.
1. you've never heard of monoprice?! they're like the official newegg of cables! and you call yourself an engadget reader (i kid, of course. :P)
2. toslink to rca?! holy mother of god. do you WANT me to have nightmares?
i know i found em today and kept yelling oh my god. so many cables i didnt know existed. i feel like an idiot for buying cables anywhere els.
i know the toslink to rca sounds funny but i just got a samsung t240hd from buy.com for 289 (yea baby) and the only audio ports are toslink and a headphone jack. i have the headphone to rca cable i've been using for my laptop but it's kinda short.
and yes that was eerily fast.
i try.
You should know that Toslink is optical (AKA fiber with light), and RCA is not (AKA copper wires); that's why they don't make a Toslink to RCA ;)
Any word on audio? Last I heard, new Macs don't output audio using miniDisplayPort even though they could!
I think they do use the minidisplay port for audio in the LED cinema displays... that or USB
What I want to know is when there will be a female minidisplay to male dvi/hdmi so that LED cinema display will work with other computers...
No audio through this one. I don't think Apple has the software to put the sound through DP yet. And Neil, the sound to the 24" LED Cinema display goes through the USB cable. I know, I have one.
I suggest you wait for Apple's own version of this cable... it is definitely higher quality and gives you the cleanest HD signal, even more than Monster cables.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/audiophiles-cant-tell-the-difference-between-monster-cable-and/
I wasn't aware Monster cables gave a better signal than most $5 cables.
Slurp that koolaid applebaby.
I didn't know Monster made printer cables until a few months ago until I was piling ancient hardware at work (IT) for salvage to pick up. I was surprised and disgusted. They probably pitched higher fidelity printing or some fucking nonsense.
Steve Jobs seems to hate HDMI. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Is there any way of getting rid of this stupid clown?
it's the RDF signal enhancement feature for the win!
Where do you guys keep getting these people names for various amounts of money?! Is there a list somewhere that I don't know about?
for real?
Maybe it's just the small Canadian town I've spent most my life in or my age working against me here
it's not common but sometimes we use the name of the person on the bill. for example a benjamin is 100.
They're all early presidents except for the 100 dollar bill, which is named after Benjamin Franklin, inventor of things such as the postal system, the fire department, and the library. Andrew Jackson is the president on the twenty dollar bill.
ahhh that makes sense, thanks Martin, it's the Canadian part that's to blame here :P
