everyone's in bed with apple already
Apple's killin it!!
As wholly expected.... Apple steals the show.
Yeah, iPhone 3G (Twice!), MacBook Pro, iMac, Cinema display, TimeCapsule. Apple is the company!!
Not only that but it seems that the MS hate is still on and shining. The Zune software is way better than the classics ipods along with the service. Also you guys can notice that they still are using the old Zune. Geezus engadget we know you have your apple overlords but at least have some integrity even if it's just a blog. I have finally conclude that the Engadget Staff are a bunch of Idiots!!! But we can't never forget the Apple trolls that voted down the zune 3.0 software.
What did you expect? The best stuff often wins
Oh yeah, I forgot, you can do copy and paste now! (wait not yet)
Have to say, I'm happy enough with iPod Touch getting best PMP, and the iPhone getting best Smartphone, but best handheld! I mean, what!?
Hate to burst its bubble, but the iPod Touch has got nothing on the DS/PSP in terms of handheld gaming. It has a lot of 'nice' games, but it hasn't got anything in the league of, for example, the recently released (for you, or 'to-be-released-in-May, for me :( ) Pokémon Platinum. I haven't seen a single bit of anticipation or hype for anything out on iPod Touch =X
@Nick
Dude, it's not Microsoft hate. Microsoft just keep making lazy, Me-Too products that don't work all that well and Steve Ballmer is at the helm. What else do you expect?
And the Zune may or may not be better than the iPod Classic, but really who cares? Apple has a better product in the iPod touch and a bigger and better ecosystem. They have more music, TV shows, movies, games, accessories. I mean, does the Zune even have any kind of video on the Zune Store yet?
@nick: That was actually readers choice...
The results are as much a function of the userbase that reads Engadget and their own... technical 'alignment', shall we say, as anything else.
Obviously, the true benchmark of what product is 'best' are sales. I doubt apple's sales in any category but smartphone and the unibody MBP are stellar enough to warrant those other awards, especially display and storage.
@Tyrotoxism
Dude, PSP/DS are out dated and over-played. The PSP is a joke. The DS is pretty sweet, but old. The DSi will take the cake next year by far. The iPod Touch kills the DS with functionality and everything. Who cares about Pokemon...it has been the same thing since the original.
And I agree with Paul about Nick.
"Dude, PSP/DS are out dated and over-played. The PSP is a joke. The DS is pretty sweet, but old. "
What this guy says. I have both collecting dust for quite some time now. UMD really is a fail and the DS games might have been fun at times, yet they were usually missing something. I would say that the iPod Touch/iPhone actually were the handheld of 2008. I can't really recall anything where DS/PSP fans had something to be excited about (OK, maybe DSi announcement and tons of PSP2 rumours). But if you look at it, handheld gaming is kind of a joke. Usually people want to play games on the go when they are bored standing in line or in a car for a couple hours, which IMO, Apple has kinda nailed down. (I sit in a car a shit load of time and on the bus as well and can't imagine carrying my PSP or DS as well as all my other stuff).
Nintendo has now got the DSi, so they have some momentum again, but Sony really NEEDS to release something new if they want to have something in handhelds. Still, the best one would be a PSPhone. I mean we are in the times right now where we are used to have as much crap stuffed into one shell (ie iPhone or many other smartphones). If Sony would release a PSPhone without UMD, a touchscreen as well as normal controls (2 nipples! :p) then I will seriously consider buying it (if the games would be any fun of course.)
The Apple Haters sure are voting now. They're voting us down, LOL. Too bad you guys can't change the results through pure whininess.
You've got to be joking... There are plenty of great AAA games for PSP, and only a handful for the DS (and even those are mostly kiddy games or games made for the Nintendo faithful). And PSP can do so much more than DS (music, movies). iPod touch may be giving it a run for its money but it is much more expensive and memory and battery can't be replaced (long travel = fail), and the games just don't compare. I made a decision to not buy Touch until it costs CDN$300 for 32G - minimum reasonable space for my music collection. So far it hasn't happened so I am sticking to 80G Classic. And PSP for gaming when traveling. Jeez, is everyone here 15 years old and playing only Zelda, Pokemon and Mario Kart?
@Paul:
"Microsoft just keep making lazy, Me-Too products that don't work all that well and Steve Ballmer is at the helm. What else do you expect?"
I'm curious, what's your source on your claim that they "don't work all that well"? From your false claims about the zune in your post, I'm guessing you've never used one or even seen one before. Actually, between the 5 or 6 people I've known with zunes, nobody has ever had a problem with them and they've always worked quite well. Also, let's not forget that microsoft put wifi in the zune, which apple mocked and said shouldn't be in a music player and then quickly announced the iphone/ipod touch which also had it.
"And the Zune may or may not be better than the iPod Classic, but really who cares?"
Umm, well since the zune is better than the iPod Classic, wouldn't that mean it's inherently NOT the worst gadget of the year? Thanks for arguing with yourself I guess...
"They have more music, TV shows, movies, games, accessories. I mean, does the Zune even have any kind of video on the Zune Store yet?"
Actually, yes, they've had both music videos and tv shows available for something like 2 years now.
Apple Won that then :D.
they win in nearly every category they can be entered in and i think overall they win.
Woop. and everything diserved to win, all rightfully placed.
I dunno, man. Apple obviously won, but even I, an inveterate Mac user, have some doubts about how much of it was deserved.
iPhone 3G? Well, obviously it wins. Unibody MacBook Pro? Hell yeah. Totally deserved.
But desktop of the year? Display of the year? Storage device of the year? I have my doubts.
The iMac is (without a doubt) a great piece of kit, but its abject rejection of upgradeability frustrates me to no end.
The Apple Cinema Displays are stunning, to be sure, but I doubt very much that they're worth the price. Maybe "value" isn't the deciding factor, but it's hard for me to swallow that a monitor that costs almost twice as much as nearly-as-good monitors really deserves "Display of the Year, especially since that particular monitor has also declared DVI, mini-DVI, and micro-DVI obsolete in favor of its proprietary Mini DisplayPort.
And the Time Capsule is a good idea, but I think it's one that's just as well implemented by connecting any external hard drive (or collection of external HDs) to a wireless router. Again, I think Apple's bold-faced rejection of upgradeability ought to bother us consumers.
Hell. Sorry for the rant. I'm not saying anybody's wrong. I like Apple products, and I love OS X. But Apple's consistent choice of proprietary and non-upgradeable solutions over popular, established, and upgradeable standards isn't always as much in the customers' best interest as Apple would have us believe. I think choosing "brushed aluminum" in spite of those problems is probably the reason we Mac users get a reputation for being rich, computer-ignorant, hipster fops. Come on, guys.
You can't spell. Use your Iphone to copy and paste your text...in the future.
I find the results of the user voted polls spurious at best. Certainly one can hardly complain that the iPhone 3G, iPod touch, and unibody Macbook come home with well deserved rewards. But the iMac? Apple 24" display? Time Capsule? The argument that these products were the best in their categories is shaky at best, as evidenced by them making no showing in the editor's choices. At one point in the polling the Apple TV, one of the worst Apple devices in years, was even leading the Home Entertainment Device category.
I would also make a similar argument about the appearance of the Wii as Game Console of the year. The device has long since lost its luster for most people who own them, and the dearth of quality titles has gone beyond "worrisome" and is now in "ridiculous" territory. Both Sony and Microsoft made far more advances in '08. Not just in terms of content, but significant firmware improvements, hardware refreshes, and price cuts as well (none of which the Wii saw in '08).
A cult following does not qualify as evidence of a superior product.
So basically you guys don't like the results because they don't fit into your preconceived notions about the devices selected. I personally owned a Xbox 360 and hated it, but I'm not going to complain just because the editors chose it. The fact that the Wii won in the reader category reflects what we see in the market.
The iMac has been wildly successful since it's first launch in 1998. The Apple Cinema display has built in iSight camera, giving it a decided edge over other displays. Doesn't look biased at all.
@Paul A. Chapel
a) The editors did choose the 360. It was the mindless fanboys in the user poll that chose the Wii as well as voted for Apple products in every category possible.
b) We're not complaining about the outcome. We're complaining about the process. Can you honestly look at the results of the user awards and say that they were the result of people seriously voting on what they thought was the best product in that category for the year? Of course not. It's a bunch of 15 year-olds (or people with the mentality of 15 year-olds) extending some imagined brand war (in which expressing affinity for a product is viewed as equivalent to pledging loyalty to the manufacturer for life) into yet another space.
Yes Apple and Nintendo both have products that deserve recognition (notably the Wii Fit, iPhone 3G/iPod touch, and Macbook). However, it seems that every well earned user award is accompanied by one that is near laughable (The aluminum iMac debuted in mid 2007 for Christ's sake).
I don't expect everyone out there to have the same exact taste in hardware as I do. Nor do I particularly care about the results of these awards. I'm just tired of seeing petty, adolescent, fanboyism masquerading as intelligent discourse and the accepted "party line" on every single website I visit.
The Engadget Awards are a joke, please don't take time to argue for or against them.
@Matt
I think you need to read my last comment again. I acknowledged that the editors chose the Xbox 360, which debuted in 2005 by the way. If you really want to expose the problems with this poll, why do you limit your complaints to the products you don't like?
Xbox 360: released in 2005
Zune: debuted with 2006, current version in 2007, with minor revisions in 2008.
Your bias is showing.
I don't own a zune but I doubt that it deserves "the worst gadget of the year title" I think people are just voting it down based on the fact that it's a MS product.
Pre should have gotten the "most anticipated gadget of the year award" by both readers & editors
iphone 3g is smartphone of the year? I thought, that smartphones means multitask feature, isn't they?
I suppose I should have expected as much from the readers, based on which comments get voted up and down.
It's like voting for prom queen or something.
it's good to know at least some engadget commenters were still on board the common sense ship. if the engadget user base = the engadget comment base, then i wouldn't be able to stand endgadget anymore. GIZ is worse, so that leaves me with what... fucking CNET.
seriously, i think people just searched the word apple or Nintendo with ctrl f and then checked each one without reading. and then made sure that Microsoft wasn't checked in any of the good categories. Seriously people, Zune 3.0 was the WORST gadget of the year? it might have some bad parts but the Worst gadget of the year?
Just ask yourself this. if, even if the ipod currently existing and if the zune didnt exist, and then apple said they are releasing a new nano, and it is EXACTLY what the $70-100 zune model is right now.. except selling for 150-250... (obviously, with no lack of half eaten fruits...) would you still say that it's the worst gadget of the year? If yes, then i respect your decision. if no, then you should look into the mirror and think about who you have become.
ps. ever wonder why the whole apple store is made out of glass front, wasn't the life without walls microsoft's thing. so much for windows.
@ Matt
loving the Brock Samson...
IPhone 3G. Give me a break. The original should of had 3G. Double the storage but give it a plastic back. And everyone seems to forget all the issues it had when it was released. Do you forget about all those Dropped Calls? Or is the standard 3.5mm headphone jack that makes it award winning.
If the IPhone 3G was the first IPhone it would absolutely be worthy, but as a successor that had missing functionality, there was nothing that made it innovative like the first gen was.
@ absurdio Just in case you don't know the reason the apple displays are priced high is because they use S-PVA panels which are more expensive but more accurately reproduce color, the cheaper displays use TN panels which are great for gaming but really suck for image manipulation work. If you compere the other displays that use S-PVA they are similarly priced if not more expensive like the Eizo or Lacie Displays.
Adding to the comments about the new Mac Cinema Display. It also has an iSight camera and microphone, as well as built-in
speaker system, a Kensington security slot, three USB ports and resolution of up to 920 by 1200 pixels.
In other words, it's a pretty impressive monitor.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-iphone-is-not-a-smartphone/
finally what ive been saying all along. it took a poll to prove. better late than never. iphone 3g best smartphone of alll times.
ipod touch best pmp/mp3 of all times. people have voted ,.,.,winmo fans will have to wait till march of 2010 to see if zune kills touch or if zune phone,.,lol,kills iphone 4g..seriously doubt it,,n have silenced all.!!!!!!!
Apple Cinema Display shouldn't win because Apple threw in a $15 webcam. In fact, ACD's are shit - much too overpriced, higher quality can be had for cheaper.
I am so SICK of all the Apple fanboies who care to be the papier mache that sticks to the bubble ever expanding over 1 Infinite Loop. You guys may protect the bubble from bursting but a bubble is a bubble and soon as any competition comes along that bubble will disappear so fast your fanboyism will crash and burn. The Pre beats the iPhone (3.0 OS might I add) down with multitasking alone, the iPod's competition is coming along from the disappearance of DRM in iTunes and other online music stores, and don't even get me started on the BS that is the new Shuffle - I could see they had them in the Apple Store the other day but they weren't advertising them or letting people demo them because they're ashamed of what corporate had wrought.
uh this sight is crowded by apple fan boy's and is made by mostly people on apple computers, of course in this unfair undiverse population of fanboys is apple going to win in next to fucking every category they are able to be entered into, and of course microsofts zune 3.0 is going to be rated the worst gadget of the year in an apple fan boy pool when it is auctually better then the ipod 120, I own both the zune 120 and the ipod 120, and the zune is way better in every category (style is subjective, and the apple ipod is overrated in style, ever heard of reality distortion field, it's happened to the ipod with it being called gorgeous every second it can be by the people getting the mullah for calling it that)
if theres one thing weve all learned here. It is that putting all fanboyism aside ,we stopped to vote n put all our differences aside. We gave honest opinions n voted iphone n ipod touch to be best devices in this our era. These devices will represent us, when looking back in 20 years from now.Once again iphone has raised the bar n represented well for all fanboys alike winmo,apple,iphone,nokia,etc.,.,u are all represented by iphone/touch. another successfull year for iphone os.
Iphone will take ALLLLL fANBOYS ALIKE N EMBRACE WITH OPEN ARMS.
@Stephen K. You're right. Monitors are not all equal, and I'll back off from suggesting that the ACD's price is totally unreasonable. I'm no expert, by any means, but I do some minor visual art on my machine and even between my external Dell and my MacBook Pro's screen there's a palpable difference in the way the colors are reproduced.
Still, I doubt that it was the nuanced eye of graphic designers that pushed the ACD to "Display of the Year" status. Also, the same folks that're best qualified to appreciate the ACD's color-reproduction accuracy are pretty likely, I think, to hate the glossy-only aspect of the displays.
I don't know. It's price does reflect its quality. It is an awfully good monitor. And the isight and all are compelling features. But the Mini DisplayPort argument still stands, and I'm still not convinced that the "Display of the Year" title came more from the ACD's technical merits than its style.
T-Mobile G1 should have been the smartphone of the year, not an incremental upgrade like the iPhone 3G...
@Matt:
I'm a 15 year old an I take offence to that. Just because I like Apple products doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to vote the iMac, Cinema Display or Time Capsule as winners of their field. That being said, it seems that many of the categories were unnecessary to begin with, and perhaps all that was needed was 'Gadget of the year', 'Runner Up' and and most anticipated for 2009.
SMARTphone of the year is smart enough not to have copy&paste?!
I'm sure that category was meant to be POPULARphone of the year...
Im sorry but.... has anyone else just lost all respect for Engadget besides me?
@thedesolate1
I have not lost all respect for Engadget its self, but I have lost most of my respect for the voters. But this is not an issue for frequent readers and such, but only once a year when all the idiot fanboys who decide to vote for the products that they hear about the most. If they have not tried the product or even looked at the features of the product they are voting for, they should not vote. It's their right to do so, but they are just making products that deserve the awards not receive them. This problem will happen every year, but I hope that people will realize their large amounts of bias and actually look up the other products and see if the item they are voting for really deserves the award.
Im sorry I almost forgot it was just a popularity contest.
=/
But... but... the Apple Haters told me that those Apple products suck. I'm so confused.
When the majority of people voting are apple fanbois it's pretty difficult to get a decent and honorable poll result.
WOW dude, reply some more... Jeez you'd think Apple winning some online poll was the highlight of your life! I really hope you're not missing out on all the wonderful things real life has to offer. Seriously man, go get some fresh air.
@Paul A. Chapel
What has change in your life since this "vote for your favorite apple product" poll. Me, not much, still didn't go out and buy a macbook in exchange for my Ps3. Don't get me wrong, both has the ability to go online and surf the web.
DON'T FEED THE TROLL
Damn, the Apple Haters act like Republicans. They can't win elections, so they just bitch. Bitch, bitch, bitch.
Considering the Republicans have won 5 of the last 8 presidential elections...
WOAH a democrat apple user?! Quick someone call the typical police!!
I'm not an Apple hater, I admire them, I just don't like people who have opinions on things they don't fully understand.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, and if it comes off like that, really I don't mean it to. It's just saying things "Does Zune even have videos on its store yet?" doesn't give me the impression of someone who knows what they are talking about (Honestly, not trying to be a jerk, if you could hear me you would understand).
And then you bash my party, judge everyone of that association because that's what you think of us. Perhaps you believe Rush is my ideological brain, but I assure you, he isn't.
I just don't believe in the assumption that you can't judge something unless you've used it. Am I to assume that everyone here has used every Apple product and can say without a doubt that the other products are better? No, we all know that's not true. Most people here are too cheap to have ever owned most of Apple products, but yet they think they are qualified to judge Apple products.
I don't have to fly into space to know it's cold and lacking in oxygen. I don't have to stick my hand into a volcano to know my hand will get burned off. I don't have to use a Zune to know that the iPod touch is better. I mean, COME ON, it's not even a contest.
@paul chapel
"I just don't believe in the assumption that you can't judge something unless you've used it..........
I don't have to fly into space to know it's cold and lacking in oxygen. I don't have to stick my hand into a volcano to know my hand will get burned off. I don't have to use a Zune to know that the iPod touch is better."
Bahahahahahahahaha! I swear we should just take all the safety labels off things around you and let you remove yourself from the gene pool
so uhhh... if the iphone wasn't put under the smartphone category... (holds mumble)
who woulda won ?
G1, IMHO
I'm confused..
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-iphone-is-not-a-smartphone/
Tyler, that article is obviously out of date. It now has 3G, can make over the air purchases( I think? I don't have one), and doesn't it have some sort of loose exchange functionality?
If I'm wrong then you're right, obviously.
Mr. Lawyer Bird Man,
3G does not constitute it being a smartphone; smartphones existed before 3G. Just poking fun at Engadget.
If I'm right, then you're wrong, obviously.
(Personally, I'd say it is a smartphone.)
Cue the comments about Apple bias...
I think that the readers got a lot of wrong, and there's obvious pro-Apple, anti-Microsoft bias there. Zune really isn't that bad, and the iMac and 24-inch Cinema display aren't really that good.
I agreed with the editors on all but one category (wearable device). Where the editors chose Apple products, those choices were well-deserved. I'm as far from an Apple fanboy as you can get, but the iPhone and the iPod Touch are industry-changing products. The unibody MBP is definitely overpriced, but it's certainly a fine piece of hardware, and far more forward-thinking than any other laptops that came out in 2008.
Think there's some apple fans who read engadget?
Probably 7 or 8. 9 max.
mmm apple and sony fanboys.
Worst
Yeah, because Microsoft Fanboys NEVER make annoying comments about non-Microsoft products. Never, ever, ever. They never even show up in posts about Apple or Sony. They respectfully comment in articles about Microsoft and totally ignore other posts. Yeah, they're just so nice, those Microsoft Fanboys.
I never mentioned Microsoft... But thanks for proving the point that a microsoft fanboy might have. Maybe I like linux...
You're welcome!
@ Paul A. Chapel: MS fanboys? Nah, even Apple fans come out to low rank you, because you (and Zak) give Apple fans a bad name.
YAY LINUX. I never thought of it but someone (read:myself) should had thrown KDE 4 into the fray.
time to start hating on apple, it's cooler that way.
It shouldn't be about hating one or the other, it should be about giving credit where credit is due. Apple makes great products and anybody can admit that but so does Microsoft wether you agree with it or not. Some people look back and criticize Windows 95 yet in 1995 Windows 95 was the shit. It might have have been the most stable OS or have the most feature but it sure was the OS to beat. It revolutionized computer and how we interact in the world.
Wrong picture for the pheonix lander?
Does this list bore anyone else?
sure, that's why we all read all the way through it and then commented on it.
iphone!!!!!!!!1!
yes.
Zune 3.0 worst gadget of the year? WTF happened to all those Crapgadgets? Blackberry Storm? frickin bias shite.
The Storm is absolute garbage. Work bought one for my entire department - everyone hates it, and the boss went back to his old Blackberry. The OS leaks make it slightly better, but it still sucks.
the Storm came close in Reader's Choice AND was Editor's Choice.
I'll like to be the first one to Congratulate Engadget for updating the picture on the Zune 3.0 even thought it got a bias Worse Gadget of the Year, The Staff has finally updated the picture. I hope you guys keep it up and at least become less bias in the future. I love Engadget for all the good stuff you inform us for but this bias you guys have must go. I think your readership would be greater if you presented a more balance reporting and giving credit where credit is due. You guys have written some good editorials with good and deserve critisism and praises so i do hope that guy guys improve in that perspective, i know you guys can, i hope you can...
wtf zune 3.0 worst gadget of the year? I bet most of the people that voted dont even own a zune.
I wouldn't even call the Zune upgraded to 3.0. They put out some new firmware and increased the max size to 120 and 16gb. I really don't think that the Zune had any place being on the list of "worst gadget of the year" because it really wasn't a new gadget. The only reason it got Worst Gadget was because a bunch of people who have never used it love to hate, as far as I'm concerned.
and it's still the pic of the first generation zune!
Argh.
Come on, Zune the worst? Blackberry Storm had FAR more issues out the gate than the Zune 3.0 software ever did, even though I hear its a half-decent device now, they pretty much shipped it with beta firmware.
So I have to own whatever device I vote for? I'm sorry, but if we're talking about the worst gadget of the year, it should be expected that most of the people voting for it don't own it. They don't own it for a reason - because it is the worst gadget of the year.
Uhhh ya Id say so or at least used one extensively, how the hell would you know if something sucks if you haven't ever used one.
So Spaceman what about people who have never USED these so called "worst devices"? Or even looked at their specs? Voting something as the best or worst without having any experience with it is ridiculous no matter what it is. Someone who votes something the worst based on other peoples opinions is someone without the knowledge or capacity to form his own.
And yeah, that applies to people who do the same for Apple products too.
zune>>ipod
Hey spaceman, then at least read a review of the product before voting it the worst of the year. The 120 GB Zune is doing just fine on Amazon, at 4/5 stars. Not the best DAP ever, but it has a lot going for it.
Actually it was just fine for them to use the original Zune.
You know, considering you can put the 3.0 Firmware on a first edition player.
But I guess complete backwards compatibility makes it the worst 'gadget' of the year.....
I'm SO happy that it was voted the worst. It shows the utter ignorance of the editors for even putting it on the list for voting, and it shows just how many jerkoffs visit this site.
why exactly is zune the worst device? i would really like some reasons
cause its a zune?
Because Apple told them it was. I'm not an Apple device hater by any means (I run an Xserve and a MacBook Pro), but I think that the iPod is soft of like Kleenex. It's the most popular, but it's not the softest or the strongest, thus not the best.I'm not saying iPod is the worst, but it's certainly not the best. Besides, Zune has some good solutions that it brings to the table. For instance, it's more personalizable with a background and Zune Originals, has online music services across the entire line, and is (in the case or rev 2 and 3) very well designed. Perhaps devices should be judged on merit instead of how many apple logos are on it.
Please put the kool-aid cup down....
I'm a huge apple fanboy, but I'm kinda disappointed that 50% of the awards went to apple devices and the majority of them were just 2nd gens that added one small thing. Not worthy of a gadget of the year award.
You mean 8 out of 23?
BURNED. And nice choice with the editor's best console right there ;] Do you know if there are any upcoming Apple events anytime soon?
Oh Josh... boldly defending Apple from exaggeration and trolls.
Actually Josh, since Apple didn't have products in every category, you're wrong.
@FF -- You'd think that we'd have found some way to put an Apple product in every category since we're such rampant fanboys. Also strange how we voted for even fewer Apple products in the editors' choice section.
