OCZ gets official with 10.1-inch DIY Neutrino netbook
We know what you're thinking -- another day, another netbook, right? Not quite. OCZ Technology's Neutrino, which we caught napping at CeBIT earlier this month, just got official. Weighing in at 2.86 pounds, the DIY netbook arrives with a 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 LED-backlit display, Intel's 945GSE chipset, a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, twin stereo speakers, VGA output, Ethernet, two USB 2.0 sockets, 1.3 megapixel camera, WiFi and a 4-cell 2,200mAh battery. Notably missing is a hard drive, RAM, multicard reader and an operating system, all of which OCZ allows the end user to purchase as they see fit. Said machine is shipping out now to channel partners, and it should be available to end users within a fortnight for $269.

unless you are british, please quit with the 'fortnight' crap. TIA
1. engadget.co.uk redirects to engadget.com, so "fortnight" serves both the USA and the British Commonwealth. fine for me here...
2. Is being so thick a consequence of it being so cheap?

It's Darren's word, deal with it.
I agree... it's pretentious and stupid. You might as well tell us how many stone this laptop weighs.
What's wrong with fortnight? Is there an easier way to say two weeks?
In Australia we say it and don't think twice about it, probably thanks to the British though. Most people get paid 'fortnightly' too.
+1
In America, we never hear the word. I am nearly certain (if my memory recalls the from pod casts) that Darren is also an American. When we hear the word fortnight, most Americans need to pull out a dictionary to look up such an obscure word.
No, only the ignorant ones.
There's no reason to dumb it down. Good writing makes the site more interesting to read.
or
Small, plain words boring. Good writer use good words for fun read.
Is that concise enough for you?
Maybe you should read more than just blogs. I'm quite sure if you did, you'd know what a fortnight is.
Hmm... It's not very good looking (too thick). I might consider it if it were 100 dollars less.
4cell battery, and no RAM or HDD/SSD or OS? I'd say $150 would be reasonable.
Though notably, its storage bay is for a 2.5" drive, so that's nice.
$270 for what exactly? Piece of plastic with a bad (not 720p) screen and a battery? I don't need a 1.3mp camera! But I would benefit from more USBs and Nvidia Ion platform and a lower price tag.
Like $100...
That is probably 89 % user friendly, if you're the tech savvy buyer. Let's hope they made sure it run OSX without much trouble, to make it 100 % user friendly.
Oh come on OCZ, you can do better than that! so far, I think Samsung makes the sleekest netbooks.
is it that much more different from the other netbooks?
Cheaper to buy stuff for yourself, plus no Windows XP licensing restrictions on hardware (1GB RAM & 160GB hard drive limits).
Not really cheaper considering the XP license will cost $100, a HDD will cost $75-100, RAM $20-40. All of that with out a warranty or bundled tech support. The price comes out to about the same as most other netbooks.
Barcode, your getting your HDDs from the wrong guys.
I got a brand new 7200rpm 320Gb 2.5" drive for 50 pounds.
I can also get a 160Gb 5400rpm 2.5" for 25 pounds brand new...
Personally i wouldnt bother with an XP lisence, i would go linux, or just whack on W7b for the time being.
$50 UK Pounds is depending on the time of year, around $75-100 US DOLLARS. Most (Tech Savvy) Americans Buy From Newegg.com, they currently have the WD Scorpio for $139 with some lesser models selling for $89-110.

In America, Best Buy is our Biggest Brick and Mortar retailer, depending on what you choose, a 320GB 2.5 inch laptop drive sells for $103-131 (at this moment)

Wow! Thanks, friend!
Why is it that OCZ is the only company that makes DIY note/netbooks? I'm sure they'd get better looking/cheaper/better/(insert increased positive aspect here) if they had a little competition. This thing is hideous.
An Ion is fine too.
Make an order for 100,000 units and I'll make some competition to OCZ, and they will most likely be cheaper as well.
Prickly (or picky) bunch.
Darren, don't let the haters snuff out your linguistic élan you puckish little imp.
Haters, as always, choke on your own bile. = D
What a TERRIBLE name... my god.
someone cant take the name centrino out of their mind ,and create this shit.
i just hope that they come out w/ a ninja turtle model next.
Nice, though I may be one of the few who actually gets that.
Seems like a good idea to me. Those are the 4 things that I want under my control, and I can get more options from Newegg.
Still, the netbook/tablet with the ARM processor is more attractive to me.
i like the idea a lot. if only there was a way to make laptops/netbooks that allow you to put in your own GPU and CPU as well...
Well there sort of is a way to do that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MXM_Graphics_Module
Nightwish > Evenescence.
Anyways, I hope it comes in all black! Not digging the two-tone.
Woops. That was for the MSI X-Slim video above this post.
ghetto gaming rig for the masses right there!
Ah something resembling a barebones laptop smaller than 15" at long last.
I love this idea, and may get one of these, i may also triple boot it with
KDE
W7b
OSX
needs WXGA. Other than that, sold.
Has nobody seen that it's ugly as sin?
kinda defeats it purpose if it only supports "up to 2GB of memory and hard drive or SSD capacities up to 250GB"
"2. Is being so thick a consequence of it being so cheap?"
I think there's an unwritten rule in design: poor people don't deserve good looking stuff.
"When we hear the word fortnight, most Americans need to pull out a dictionary to look up such an obscure word. "
Oh, the HORROR!
;-)
The comment above was in reply to the first comment thread.
Damn you Engadget comments!!!
I love this idea, but like all of you have pointed out, this thing looks something awful. I also agree that if it were in the $150-200 range I would be sold on it. I am all for the barebones laptops, but there isn't enough competition or companies making good enough solutions for them.
Not cheap enough - you can get an MSI Wind from Amazon for 299 - so for the 30.00 difference in price you're getting a 160gb hd, 1 gig ram, an os and a wireless card...
Plus, the most OSX compatible netbook out there.
Come on OCZ - make this 149.99 and you might get some bites.
Where does it say that there is no wireless card? But you are right, if it were $150 I would definitely take it. Maybe even at $200. I could add a good OCZ 64 GB SSD and 2GB of RAM for $100 then just boot linux and W7b. That would be the cost of an MSI Wind, except more RAM and a SSD rather than standard HDD. $70 price drop and I am just about sold.
I would cream my pants for exactly this with ion.
Maybe could live with what appears to be more thickness, but the craptacular battery kills it for me.
Their website documents show a space for a SIM card to be inserted. I like this setup. I would throw in one of their Vertex SSDs and Windows 7.
