Dell launches freshened Vostro 1320, 1520 and 1720 laptops
It's been awhile since this family saw any updates, but we must say, Dell did a pretty laudable job with the redesign here. Make no mistake -- these guys are still aimed squarely at the gamboling suits in attendance, but we could certainly see a consumer or two pulling the trigger. The freshened line includes the 13.3-inch Vostro 1320, the 15.4-inch Vostro 1520, and the 17-inch Vostro 1720, all of which come with pre-installed videoconferencing and webcam software (so long as you purchase the integrated webcam and microphone). Furthermore, users can now opt for an SSD in place of the traditional hard drive, a fingerprint reader for added security or an encrypted HDD with Wave Systems software. The whole trio is available today in North America and select South American countries starting at $569 (Vostro 1520), $629 (Vostro 1320), and $649 (Vostro 1720).

ha the good ol vostro line..these will always sell
Gamboling?
Like on a river boat?

I kid, I kid!
Just a little purposeful misinterpretation for comedic effect.
-or affect, as the case may be. :o
Well at least the post can serve as a "word of the day" for those who don't read it on their toilet paper.
Are those speakers I see? On a Dell laptop?
No. Dell laptops have never come with speakers.......why would they start now?
Yes, those are speakers, and the vents on the front of my Inspiron are jealous. These are vents, right?
Can these new Vostros be docked? Dell kind of has you trapped into the Latitude if you want to dock.
I think the Russians plan on Docking the Vostro with the Space Station next week.
It really DOES sound like a Russian Spacecraft...
No, you still have to get the latitude.
You may want to look at refurb's - many of them are 'previously ordered new' - which means that they are new - but someone cancelled the order or the order was refused upon delivery. So, by law - any device sold to one person and sold to another has to considered 'refurbished' even if there was no issue. This is how I buy my notebooks and many times I have found Latitudes under refurb cheaper than a new Vostro. Its worth a look at least. You can find it under the 'dell outlet' in the business section of Dell.com
I remember when my trust old Inspiron 8600 could dock. Of course I bought an Inspiron precisely because I wasn't in the market for the kind of laptop that could dock, but it was nice to know it was there.
gambol is the word of the day for gmail.
My cat's breath smells like cat food.
Hey! My breath smells like cats too!
Wait, what did you say?
is there any word on a refreshed m1530 from dell? (ala studio xps 13)
Ugly as hell.
I'll stick with a Mac
Except most executives aren't flaming homosexuals, I kid, I kid! : D
And don't have the budgets to waste that kind of money...
looks like a lenovo
Looks like a ThinkPad.
the 13" is really priced between the 15" and 17"...?
weird.
just looked... apparently so. 15" must sell more in business channels. or something.
15" laptops are cheap. It is less difficult to engineer, the components are cheaper and you sell more of them, simple as that.
17" screen is too big to carry, and 13" has the older ladies complaining.
5x 1500's and 4x 1510's is all my organization bought. And its funny, cause the 1500 has more features than a 1510.
whats this? a black macbook pro redesigned by toddlers? why does it have the word "dell" with a funny E?
Boring troll is boring.
600 bucks for a floating computer?! Even if it is 2 inches off the ground, that's a bargain!!
I wonder if Dell improved the disarmingly mushy keyboards on these things -- that was the only real gripe-worthy downside to the older models.
The Vostro 1500s are actually damned good looking for $500 machines. We just got a couple in at work.
I wonder if they'll ever get anything better than my Vostro 1500.
Nononono!
My Vostro 1510 is 3 days outside of its 30 day return period!
:(
I have a Vostro 1510. I would have proffered an XPS laptop but i got it as a gift so i can't complain. They are pretty decent machines for their price but unfortunately they do have a kind of mushy keyboard.
The 1320 fills the void left by the XPS 13, at least as far as I'm concerned.
I like the specs of the XPS, but don't like the built-in mirror. Granted, there's no eSATA port, but I can make do without.
I had a Vostro 1510, after it was stolen I went for the Dell Studio 1537.
IMHO much better than the Vostro with about the same price (here in Israel).
The Studio has a P8400 cpu, 4500MHD IGP, with eSata and hdmi out, and 2 outputs for earphones.
and it has a better keyboard, fingerprint reader, and normal speakers. (the touchpad however is worse).
from this angle those keyboard side grills look a lot like the MacPro grills, but black.
im typing on a computer that looks exactly like the one above. Except mine is a Lenovo IdeaPad Y530....
Ugh. These are almost just as bad as the -10 series. The only thing that has been improved is that the tray loaded optical drives are back. Still, neither the -10 nor the -20 series comes close to the original -00 series.

I was ready to pull the triigger on this and then I saw where it only has one USB port. How do you develop a computer in this day and only have one USB? That is crazy and a deal killer for me.
One? How do you figure?
It has FOUR USBs, two per side... see pics (and captions) here:

Also, happily, the keyboard seems to have been fixed. FTA: 'I could not find any area of flex on the keyboard, even when trying.'
Pulled the trigger for my wife today since they're on sale:
Cherry red, free XP downgrade, 2.1 GHz, Core 2 Duo, 3 GB, 250 GB freefall sense 7200 rpm drive, LED backlit, 2 yr extended, free laser mouse and belkin bag, integrated webcam... < $680 free delivery. Nice.
I just took delivery of my Vostro 1320 yesterday and I just love it. My previous laptop -- an Inspiron M630 still had lots of life in it, but now was the time to buy as the Canadian Govt was offering a full write off on computers for business purposes. It is more compact and lighter that the M630, but it will travel more easily for me.
I, too, took the XP downgrade and was delighted to see that I also got the Vista software with it -- if I should decide to upgrade. I haven't heard many good things about Vista -- still waiting for that 2nd or 3rd service pack.
It's well worth the money, as far as I am concerned.
