Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I wish this came with an internal optical drive.
why? It would completely throw off the purpose of this device. Plus I hardly use my optical drive on a regular day, in fact I have removed mine from my laptop to save weight. If they would bump speccs to laptop level (aka Dual Core 2.0GHz+) and still keep it thin, light and cheap I would be interested.
Wow.. this escaped the bashing the Macbook air got.. I'm not exactly surprised but it's interesting to see how people react to certain companies. Although this is a lot cheaper so maybe that's why.
@sacapuntas
just because you dont use your optical drive it doesnt mean other people dont use there optical drive
...just saying
I would really get pissed if optical drives-in-netbooks became a trend. They increase the weight, are susceptible to failure, make a lot of noise, and are infrequently used. Just use an external optical drive to load programs. If you're one of those people who complains "I can't watch DVD's without an optical drive!" stop living in the stone age; just digitize your movies and throw them on a media server.
yet another nail in the coffin for physical media, although there's still a lot of love for flash media (SD cards)
besides those of you optical drive lovers would appreciate that the external drive is included in the purchase, although I'm not sure where Engadget got "Blu-ray-packin'" from
I wish it didn't come with an optical drive, period. No need to spend extra on yet another external drive I don't need.
That might drop the price of the laptop to a more reasonable 600.
So where's the mention of Blu-Ray on either link?
I think the Bluray drive is the external pod on the left, as the spec sheet on the hp website says the thing has an internal DVD 8x superdrive, similar to the Samsung NC20.
Or is it the new 12 inch from Asus that has the built in drive? Whatever, it's one or the other. I can't keep up with all these tiny netbook/notebooks anymore as they are all so damned alike.
pushhhh... not feelin' it
I'm pushing as hard as i can!!
I like it. I'd buy one.
But sooooo much glare.
its got a widescreen, but its......square?
The square is it's external drive, not the minime of the laptop.
The bezel's bigger on the top and bottom than the sides. Thus, the screen's rectangular but the top appears square.
yes. thank you captain obvious.
woops! that last one was @pciv.
you beat me to it jayse ;)
ironically i have no comment
An athalon processor? You're joking, right? I was interested, but a battery-chewing Athalon processor just defeats the purpose of an ultra-portable. Besides, with these specs you're better off spending 150 more for a macbook, and throwing Windows 7 on it.
First of all, It's spelled Athlon
Second, It's an Athlon Neo, which is AMD's in-between-atom-and-normal-mobile-cpu CPU
Thirdly, Ranking down for feeling compelled to use the M word.
15w. I think that's less than most laptop CPUs
Athlon Neo 15W, typicaly Core 2 Duo mobile 35W, atom 5w, get your facts straight.
I thought the purpose of buying a mac was for the software. Why would I spend more money, if I'm going to install windows 7 over it? Uh... What!?!?
@KeegdnaB
My bad... iPhone spell correct strikes again. But seriously, you're comparing a ULV processor to a stock C2D? Apples and oranges.
@Moses
Some people, like myself, love Apple hardware but absolutely despise their software. That is why Boot Camp and Parallels are both very popular pieces of software now that it is relatively easy to run an OS other then Apple's on their products.
This is exactly the kind of laptop I've been waiting for. Since my next machine will be a homebuilt desktop, I'm still gonna want something for portablity, and I like this since it's more than a netbook but still small, thin, and pretty inexpensive.
If you consider 750 bucks "inexpensive," we obviously come from different tax brackets. I paid $399 for my 14" Gateway 2 years ago, and it kicks the crap out of this thing in every single department except video, but seeing how the underside heated up to 102 degrees during testing with 3Dmark06, I hope you don't plan on keeping it close to your nads while bust out a game of Quake waiting at the bus stop.
But a macbook does not come with a blu ray bag of hurt!
and ooops, neither does this. The post lied!
And having read the specs now, neither does this!
So how well would this thing handle L4D or TF2?
I can't wait to play OnLive with this thing!
There is a user review of this here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=368400
It only has one Dimm, filled with a 4Gb... surely they could have used 2x2 to save costs?
well, I was going for this, until the geniuses at HP decided to save 50 cents by using 10/100 ethernet. Way to go.
It looks nice but it's stuck with Vista...so NO.
Nothing is "stuck" with Vista.
you can install any OS you want on it....not that Vista is actually that bad anyway.
it would be cool if it did away with the trim around the keyboard. make it full sized rather than 92% like the powerbook 12"
