Acer announces Aspire Timeline thin'n'lights -- $699 to $899
Acer's announcing a ton of new gear right now (we're live at the event in a New Jersey IMAX theater, of all places) and the hottest new products so far are the new Aspire Timeline laptops. Hard specs are a little light at the moment, but what we do know sounds pretty great: 13.3, 14.1 and 15.6-inch LED-backlit 16:9 screens in a one-inch thick chassis, Intel ULV processors, multitouch touchpads, HDMI and S/PDIF out, and eight hours of battery life -- 10 hours with an SSD. The real killer is pricing, however: $699 to $899. Ouch -- poor Adamo. We're still at the event, but we'll be trying to get as much info on these as we can, stay tuned.
Update: We got some more detailed specs, and things are still looking good -- like, built-in WiMAX good. The processors will be ULV Core 2 Duos, and the 13.3-inch model will weigh 3.5 pounds while the 15.6-incher will tip in at 5.3 pounds. RAM is DDR3 and drives top out at 500GB spinners and 64GB SSD. We're angling for clock speeds, we'll let you know when we go hands-on

Yeah! Fuck the Adamo!!
That is blunt and unkind language. The sentiment is understood though.
However, surely a little sympathy for Apple at this point would not go amis. They have based their whole position is the market place on high pricing for a stylish product. With their failure rate on the increase and the move towards a browser centric user experience, the question is "What are they going to do ?".
Almost everyone I speak to uses their Apple PC to browse the internet. Every single one of them uses Firefox, many of them are looking forward to Chrome. The argument over which OS is better, Linux or OSX or Windows, is pretty moot. The OS is becoming irrelevant to many, except for gamers, who clearly need Windows.
Many are now seeing Apple losing its appeal with the teeny boppers and the rich kids. Instead, soon Apple will be confine to those who actually want to use OSX for its own unique aspects (whatever those are).
I would argue that even the gamer appeal of Windows is wanning. It'll never die and it has it niche but its glory days are over. Warcraft, piracy and consoles are suffocating it.I just wish console games had an equivalent of the mouse.
If you could put the power of a mouse in a game controller then you would be rich.
You do know this has nothing to do with Apple.
... but it's an Acer
@muntari,
"you do know this has nothing to do with Apple"
and this has nothing to do with adamo ?
but this does have everything to do with Apple. That is what we do here. We compare stuff with Apple. In this particular instance Acer has produced a really sexy looking product, there are bound to be comparisons made to apple product and questions asked about the legitimacy of the Apple pricing.
@ fishepops
Ok keep doing you, comparing Apple's prices, lol.
Core 2 Duo ULV! 3.5 pounds! 500GB HDD option! WiMax!
Just one more tick (the 9400M/HD3200 one) and this will totally destroy everyone else. Even at this point, even if it was a lowly clocked ULV, this is my next unit. I'll cry tears of joy if a 9400M or HD3200 is possible but even Intel's option are enough for my non-gaming, ultra portable, long life needs.
@fishypops
although it had absolutely nothing to do with the article.. you got it spot on.
yeah I dont like the adamo computer but I think I watched too much battlestar because I feel angry hearing something so close to fuck adama.
Wow, talk about a gamechanger.
Now we get to see which our market values most, design or function?
Any bets?
Price
So much for the Adamo and the Macbook Air. Both overpriced and under performers.
I see a very bleak future for Apple. Clearly, with their luster already dulled, they won't be able to survive at their pricing level.
Bleak.
air been out since jano of 2008.
So how is the Air underperformed? For its size, it beats many laptops. Especially with the 9400M. But if you haven't noticed, Apple isn't about getting the lowest price.
this really is very nice.
it would be really a good idea for Apple to copy this. I hope that they do, i was looking to pay a little more than $899.
Whoa. This has my attention.
I was saving for the Adamo...
I am proud to live in a fruit-free household
Let's hope these won't have Core 2 Solos like the MSI X340 does. Thats a deal breaker for sure.
Last time I checked the MacBook Air and Voodoo Envy used Low Voltage cpus, not ULV, so they still do have that performance edge, albeit at a steep cost.
If these have half decent gpu & cpu, I'm down.
ULV's at this price point? Solo maybe?
Still very competitive against the X-Slim. Adamo and Air can go do themselves in a little corner.
For this price, it has to be single core processors, if not, then I am impressed.
No ion means no go for me!
I hope that's not their slogan. I had to reread that at least 3 times before I kinda understood it. I still don't really know where they're getting at, though.
Are these comparable to the MSI X-320 & 340? Nice option if they are.
Core 2 Duo SU9400 1.4GHz!
$799? Sold.
Hot damn, that is pretty fruggin good for a ULV ultraportable! : 0
Get over your Apple lovefest, this has nothing to do with Apple. And Apple's future looks stronger than Dell's.
Dv2 got pwnt...
This outta shut up that guy who was arguing with me yesterday on the DV2 post about how wonderful AMD's new ULV lineup is.
does HDMI handle audio output on those when connected?
I can't imagine how did they get these babies down to this price range, seriously - seems too good to be true, I fear that it smells of crappy plastic construction.
Or is the starter price for models with 512mb ram 80gb@4200 hdd with linux?
Too bad this thing runs Windows, can't beat the most advanced operating system that is OSX. I have a macbook air and I love it.
Uuuh... Aaahhh... This is it !!! Baby, chamone, this has got me so excited, i feel like dancing You Rock My world - MJ, GOSH, am so getting this immediately its released, check out the mouth watering specs, then combine it with the lovely, precious, priceless, fluid, sexy Windows 7 and you've got beyonce squirting all over your face. Urgh!!! Am so hot, i think am... Am... Am... Gonna blow... Urgh!!! Oh yeah!! Oh yeah!!!
Such a pity for apple fan boys, check out the hot babes they are missing... Instead they prefare sucking steve jobs balls. Such gay, fools... I mean spending $1000 for a stupid fruit logo... Thats insane... Wisen up fanboys. Anyway keep sucking only one set of balls, while i contemplate on which blazing hot chick to fuck... Gosh they r just so much. I might just fuck all...
To think you would do that to a computer has me worried...
wow just wow - don't know what to say to this :-s
funny though
The specs sound great...but the design? very generic looking, if the slides are any indication.
2002 called...they want their laptop designers back.
With ULV comes lower clocks... I'm afraid that it'll choke if you try to play some higher bitrate content?
Long battery life is useful also when playing movies at dim backlight while on a plane. But if it can't keep up with the media...
A Core 2 Duo is going to be enough for high bit rate content. Considering the prices we can expect a processor clocked just under what we see in the highest clock speed MacBook Air. Consider also that every graphics option these days be it Nvidia's 9400M, AMD's HD3200, or even Intel's 4500HDM can offload much of the decoding or at least help enough.
Damn, very nice. Looks promising. I want to get a decent ultra-portable before I go to college, and this might just be it. I hope Asus tries to match this.
Wow, do you guys remember just couple of years ago how Acer was doing? It's been a long way for them to get this far. From the day that I wouldn't even take a glance at their product to today... they have me keep on pressing F5 to refresh the page to get updates on these laptops. What's even more impressive is that almost every comment on this page has been comparing Acer to Apple and Dell. Just wow! Keep up the good work and keep them coming.
I've heard of Macs being likened to cars before, but Me4u2's analogy is the first (and hopefully last) time I've ever heard of electronics being likened to "blazing hot chicks." I get that you dig porn dude, to each their own, but this is just not the place haha.
Anyway, people are saying how this release effects, or relates to Apple. It does and it doesn't.
These new laptops (or any for that matter) aren't going to hurt apples business. The company has a rock solid consumer base, and, ever since Steve Jobs returned in 97, is a case in point example of flawless marketing (there are actually entire chapters in textbooks written about it). Apple is perhaps THE market driving computer company. That said this does have to do with Apple. You can't even argue that these new Laptops take cues from Apple's offerings. Apple might not have invented multi-tough trackpads, LED backlit displays, glowing logos, or metal/unibody cases, but because of the Buzz that these things get when they are featured on apples new products, the rest of the market starts to adopt them. It's called skimming, they add new unique/revolutionary/expensive features to their products, get tones of media attention and charge an arm and a leg. They wait for the features to saturate the market and come down in price, and then they start all over again. People either love or hate Apple for this.
But really, this thread has nothing to do with Apple. So we are starting to see some Apple influence in Acer, and what's wrong with that? I think it's freakin awesome. Look at these things, with those specs, that style, and at that price, who wouldn't want one. Acer really has one up on all the other PC manufacturers. People are going to want this product, and they are going to be able to afford two.
Lets be stoked about the direction the laptop market is taking, and not bicker which OS to spend the lonely nights with, ahem, me4u2.
I like you. I like you a lot. I wish you were born a girl.
I agree with you :)
Yeah.... these are pretty hot. Definitely Apple-inspired, they just decided to make some cheap Apple competition. Style is OK, weight OK, price INCREDIBLE. Sure, they are loads slower than a MBA, MBA (which is _not_ using the ULV processor AFAIK) but that's how they get the 8 hour battery life. Trade-offs.
This particular combination of trade-offs I find very appealing. Especially at these prices. Acer is kicking some serious behind here, of course other PC makers are going to feel the impact most (HP and Dell). I can almost forgive them for not producing any high end TravelMate anymore. Almost.
Oh lordy. Let the res be high, let the battery life stay high, let it decode 1080p high bitrates with ease.
10 hours with an SSD? Wowwsssa. Consider this tagged.
Are these Notebooks coupled with GN40 chipset? Or discrete VGA card?
chipset.
Well, is it a concave screen? Would love to have one if.
