Latest PSP2 rumor covers familar ground, adds pre-Xmas release date

Not that we needed much more evidence that 2009 would be the year 'o PSP rumors, but Pocket Gamer is now reporting that it has heard from an "insider source" who says that the PSP2 will indeed be released before Christmas of this year. That source, who's supposedly a "developer working on the new hardware," also backs up some of the earlier rumors about the design of the device itself, saying that it will be more like the iPhone than the current PSP, and that it will boast a sliding touchscreen that conceals the buttons and dual analog controls when it's closed. Not much more than that, unfortunately, but who know's what next week's rumor will bring? We're personally hoping for a surprise Atari Lynx rebirth to really shake things up.

Make sure it still has Video Out and keep it as SECURE as 1-3 FW versions, and ill buy it.
The best thing to happen to the psp was and is Homebrew.
and no i dont want a pandora
If you like homebrew, you should get a pandora!
Sorry, I had too :-p
Pandora the battery and jigkit memstick is how you homebrew your psp.
You can use a PANDORA BATTERY kit
but I'm talking about the HANDHELD device
and i have never used a Pandora battery for my psp, i had a 1.5 firmware.
rizzo = fail
The Pandora has awesome specs, but the real question is if there are going to be games to push those specs, and get the most out of them.
I want it to be everything the Pandora will be...but I don't want a Pandora. You kind of lost me on that one.
I hope the PSP loses that UMD drive. I've only got a couple of games so I'll take the loss. The UMD drive was such a useless device since you couldn't record with it or store anything on it. Sony should just put in two Memory Card Duo slots and be done with it. 16GB cards are somewhat reasonable and a couple of them would give you room to spare. I think the PSP2 would make a good media player to watch movies on.
nice timing for an upgrade. my PSP is dying, hope it can hold longer until PSP2 release. please sony please release it quick!
Same here.. I have been waiting for an upgrade..and sir.. this is it. Now..Kojima.. MGS2 : SOL for PSP2? Please?
lol i might finally have something to replace my GBA SP... this thing sounds almost exactly like what i'm looking for in a handheld. only difference is i would have made it a clamshell to protect the screen, but oh well.
@maveric101
I really hope that was sarcasm because if it wasn't security will have to escort you off this blog immediately for having outdated technology instead of emulating it. In all seriousness tho the current PSP is pretty sweet especially with M33 and if what all the rumers are describing is true, Sony can have my money.
Damn, gotta come out soon... I've wanted to get one for a while now, but I just had a hard time purchasing a device that used UMD for a format. I'm not too worried about the Memory stick, but UMD was the questionable piece of the puzzle. Maybe i should thank the Rumor mill for keeping the money in my wallet for now though.
Sorry, but a serious handheld gaming device needs dual touchscreens. With the capability to overlay/slide in/snap on a thin game controller pad or even thin keyboard etc. on top of the touchscreen. The device should be closeable with the thin controller pad snapped on top of the second screen. The controller pad can have see thru areas taht let you see bits of the touchscreen underneath it.
Third parties should be able to make controller pads .. maybe with OLED buttons etc.
You must not have cost as a consideration.
JS, don't ever stop dreaming
kinda lost me there. anywho, imo dual screens isn't worth it. all the best video games ever made only used one screen.
going to need a lot of disk space. Games like God of War for the current psp are nearly 2GBs (1.2GB compressed).
40 gig ssd anyone?
If that were the PSP 2 I'd totally get one...
I may be wrong, but doesn't the description sound like it was drawn straight from the rendering impression of the PSP1?
I'd rather see it have a clamshell design so that the screen would be protected when it was closed.
+1
but then how would sony sell iphone like cases?
Personally i would love the design on this render. Dont care about screen protection, thats just me.
Looks like just a screen when closed.
Touch interface. Go the extra mile sony and cram a camera in this too.
GLOMP...
it will slide out from under the controls, thus protecting and cleaning the screen at the same time. I been telling you all for months that it is the PS2p not the psp 2. now you might believe me. I have an insider at Sony Japan. I knew about this back in Feb. but oh no you all called BS on it. Don't you feel silly now?
You know, there`s not much point in saying practically EVERYTHING in the title of the post.. I didn`t even read it, after seeing the title.
Too bad. They gave away a million dollars. It was pretty cool. U shoulda been there. We missed you.
Those renderings are sweet. Yes, I know they've been used in every PSP2 rumor.
An iPhone like model with retracting thumb pads would be perfect. But I haven't owned a handheld gaming device since the Gameboy Color (yellow) so the likelyhood I'll buy any PSP is slim to none.
Anyone know when XBP will be out?
It never seemed to me like a MS portable gaming device would have much of a niche - the NDS and PSP seem to cover the 2 distinct halves of the portable gaming scene - I'm not sure where a 3rd platform would fit into that - I always saw them building on either Zune/WinMo in much the same way iPhone app store has.
They stopped developing it after a bug was found that caused "Rosie Palm of Death" to many of the beta testers.
dual analog sticks, no UMD, touch screen with gyro sensor, plz
E3 is around the corner...
That is one sexy device, alas I don't know that I'd play enough games or video's on it to make it worthwhile.
What the!!
More like the iPhone, great that's all we need another major company trying to rip apples ideas n innovation. How pathetic.
Class we have here more proof that iPhone not only revolutionized cell phones pmps digital cameras but now portable gaming systems.
Will we ever see any innovation other than apple,?
fanboy much?
You give us iPhone users a bad name. Apple didn't invent the touch screen, they didn't invent gaming, and they sure didn't invent a dedicated game system like the PSP has been.
Plus that is an Artist render not an official picture, and if Sony ever made that device I would definately be in line to get it due to it's beauty, and besides the iPhone looks nothing like that, two different devices and two very different purposes.
Go troll else where
lol can i get some of the stuff your smoking?
the only thing the iphone 'revolutionized' was a touch screen, which had been in cell phones long before anyway. my 3 year old razr is more of a PHONE than the iphone is.
and there is no argument at all for the iphone being a gaming machine .... because its not, apple hasnt made a game console, and games hardly run on their os so they have a long way to catch up.
I agree with you, d889, on everything except when you said "apple hasn't made a gaming console." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin
I think Sony makes very nice hardware but their software seems to be lacking in terms of fun games. I had so much fun playing NSMB on the DS - what games on the PSP can provide me with fun for hours and hours?
they should make a MYLO that looks like that as well and it'll be a instant hit!
Whatever, the Atari Lynx was the shizzz.. had better color, better processor was an all around better hand held console then anything else out there on the market at that time.
-Romeo
better processor? gimmie a break what was it oh 32 Hz? yeah thats way better than the psp. yeah way better. Fool.
soopergooman - He said "at that time". Did you not catch that part? Little slow on the uptake maybe? Go back to school, learn how to read, then come back. Thanks.
I agree. Hell, I still have mine in a box somewhere.
As I recall I traded my original Gameboy in to get it.
ARGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!! not that rendering again!! I'm SOO sick of seeing it.
I just want this thing to come out so I can stop seeing that damn mockup
This makes me rethink getting a DSi... oh what to do, what to do.
You get a DSi. If this is still in the rumor stage, it's not going to be out too much before Christmas...of next year...and that's if the rumor is actually true. Of course Sony might end up slapping a second analog nub and a touch screen on the current PSP. In that case, it could be out at Christmas time of this year.
Currently my old phat psp is being used as a wifi enabled security cam (Thanks Homebrew Developers around the world), the slim I own for games. Beat that ninty and xsux. Apple is rotten to the core.
i don't care too much about the nitty gritty specifics at this point. all i'm concerned about is Mac OS X compatibility. Sony waited until within a year of the end of the current PSP (still speculation) to get the PSP Online Store up and running. Before that, only PC users could transfer games from their computers to their Memory Sticks. If they're going to be ditching the UMD altogether, then this tomfoolery can't be allowed to continue.
Way to bite (some of) the hands that feed you, Sony.
