With all
the doom and gloom stories we've seen about PlayStation 3 getting beat by Nintendo Wii, it's refreshing to have some good news for a change. For the first time in
16 months, Sony's console managed to best its motion-controlled competitor, 146,948 to 99,335 this past March in Japan, according to gaming research group /
Famitsu publisher Enterbrain. The sales are undoubtedly helped by PS3 heavy-hitters
Yakuza 3 and
Resident Evil 5 debuting last month, and at this point we don't expect the trend to continue, but for now Sony, enjoy your victory and bask in the knowledge that you're still totally kicking Xbox 360's rear in your home country.
ahh... but what if everyone already had a Wii and now wants to buy another ps3.
They don't. Wii sales are much, MUCH lower than DS sales, and even DS is only approaching the one-per-household level.
Wii sales right now in Japan are not very good. This isn't because everyone has one but because not many major Wii games are coming out (until MH3, Wii Sports 2 etc).
PS3 sales right now in Japan are good (again because of games).
No excuses or weird explanations needed, really. Just games.
I don't think this is "overtaking". I mean, in a race, when one guy is going faster than the other guy, but he's eighteen thousand miles behind on the track, you don't say he's "overtaken" the leader.
I'm not in love with Home, but considering I have played the Wii and the 360, and I don't have a netflix account, I'm happy I picked up a PS3 at launch. I'm not going to gush, but I couldn't live thinking about the red ring of death everyday, and for the Wii, I got bored with it after 2 days. Sure, my 5 year old would still be enthralled with it, but she's satisifed with the eye toy, and so am I.
Fingers crossed that the systems continues to progress.
Nice to see PS3 getting some proper notice. It really is a decent system despite its price. The games I want to play are on the system and the options/flexibility (hard drive upgrade,DIVX,etc) are there as well.. Maybe things will pick up this year for the system.
"sk in the knowledge that [YOU'RE] still totally kicking Xbox 360's rear in the country."
I have 2 PS3's even though I am not a gamer. I just find all the other features very convenient as an overall media center.
a) Very quiet
b) Streams media over the network
c) Plays Blu-rays, DVD's and CD's
d) Decent storage which can be easily upgraded.
e) And when it is not doing any of the above, it is helping humanity by solving complex problems.
I think a lot more PS3's will slip into people's living rooms because of the above - even though they have no interest in playing video games.
What? Did hell just freeze over?
The only reason I can think of for PS3 outselling Wii in Japan is because everyone in Japan probably already has a Wii...
Wow, Sony fanboys are tools....this is in Japan people! Which doesn't even account for 13% of global sales. Its like saying your favorite team lost the super bowl but they did win one game in the playoffs lol! Enjoy the small victory and bask in your denial... Sony is still butt raping you on price point but who cares its still kick ass in Japan! (sarcasm) lol!
NO!
The climb in PS3 sale is primarily due to the PS3 promotion happend 3 weeks ago. PS3 took a $100 off if you sign up for Sony Card and additional $200 off if you spend $3000 on credit card bill for the next 6 months.
This essentially knocks down the price of PS3 to $100 for the average YUPPIE. So That means PS3 is underselling the competition.
that promotion has been going on and off for a loooong time. Everyone i know with a Wii bought the system with intention to play it but they're all dusty and unused. Xbox 360/PS3 ftw
Sorry to burst your bubble on this, but Sony has been offering similar incentive in US for 3 years now and I have not noticed any crowds applying for Sony Card in great numbers.
There is no point to argue which console is better. They are all different and unique in their own way.
Wii has no DVD drive and is strictly a low end game console that utilizes simple games, and low end graphics (When comparing to XBOX360 and PS3) It's much cheaper as a result and you get exactly what you pay for. It's more for kids.
XBOX360 is a improvement in over Wii because it has a DVD drive (you can also get a blu-ray drive too) and much more powerful graphics than Wii. Came on a market earlier so Microsoft could improve manufacturing process and lower costs sooner.
PS3 is most advanced and powerful console hands down. Blu-ray drive alone ads almost 150$ to it's cost. Yeah who cares right, wrong how do you want to play games which are read with Bly-ray drive, there is build in wifi, most powerful processor and most of all best out of the box game console for next 5 years.
Depending on what you want and what you like you pick your console.
I got PS3 after waiting 2 years to buy it for few simple reasons:
Most powerful console = better games in a future than competition can handle
1080p resolution = best quality image
Blu-ray drive = I love watching movies at Movie Theater quality oh and Blu-Ray is future
Of course the PS3 is outselling the Wii NOW- everyone in Japan has a Wii already.
The last time I saw a ps3 was about 6 months ago and I couldn't help but thinking that the operating system is just too boring. I love it on my psp but When I'm sitting in front of my TV I want something a little more appealing. I'm sure that you can download themes and all that just like the psp. Have they updated the OS like they did the 360? The operating system is the main reason that I bought the 360 and then I discovered xbox live. PS3 needs to start charging for PSN, unless they already have, so they can put more money into that piece of crap. XBOX LIVE is what's kickin everyone's butt as far as I'm concerned.
Well, since pretty much everybody and their family members already got the Wii, isn't it obvious that Wii sales doesn't stay up all the time? Now that everybody have a Wii, people would be looking for another console, obviously they will go to the PS3. IMO PS3 won't do as well as it should until Sony brings back PS3 compatibility.
