2010 Range Rover gets 12-inch 'dual view' touchscreen
We've seen dual view prototypes for ages now, but you can bank on said technology (dubbed Parallax Barrier) being front and center on Land Rover's forthcoming flagship vehicle. Announced today at the New York Auto Show, the 2010 Range Rover will arrive with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system that puts off different images depending on the viewing angle. In order words, the driver can check out the route to grandma's house while the lucky soul riding shotgun peeks a DVD -- in theory, at least. The navigation system is HDD-based and also includes a USB socket and a dedicated iPod port. Land Rover even spruced up the voice activation system, giving motorists the ability to voice their concerns about climate and volume (and get instant results). Check the full snippet just past the break.

World first 'dual view' screen technology
The 2010 Range Rover is the first to feature 'dual view' infotainment touch
screen technology. The display allows the driver and passenger to view
completely different images simultaneously. This means that the passenger
can enjoy a DVD movie while the driver follows navigation instructions, all on
the same screen.
The system uses patented Parallax Barrier technology to alternately hide and
reveal columns of pixels to the left and right hand views of the screen. The
display comes with a specially designed agar coating to help prevent sunlight
bleaching.
The screen retains all of the touch-screen functionality of the previous
display, but the graphics and menus have been redesigned for easier and
more intuitive operation, allowing the number of 'hard' buttons around the
screen to be reduced by a third. As before, functions such as satellite
navigation, DVD video, and audio systems can be controlled via the display.
An updated voice control system with enhanced voice recognition software
complements the touch screen, and can be used to control a range of
entertainment and comfort features such as the audio system and climate
control.

Land Rover's Range Rover: The only netbook that comes with a FREE CAR!
cholly @ Apr 8th 2009 9:34AM
is the speed in km or can this thing really hit well over 210...
Smi @ Apr 8th 2009 9:44AM
It says km/h right in the middle of the speedo ;-)
That said however, even my wee Citroen Saxo's speedy goes up to about 150 - speeds well above what it'll actually do.
bk7 @ Apr 8th 2009 9:45AM
that would be kp/h.. seriously? how many sports cars do you know of that can do 210, let alone a 4x4?
Col. Readily Apparent Upon Cursory Inspection @ Apr 8th 2009 10:46AM
As a friendly note, if you see the steering wheel on the left then most likely the speedometer is in km/h. Not always, but nearly so.
cholly @ Apr 8th 2009 12:20PM
The last picture with the steering wheel wasn't up when i left a comment.....now i look like an idiot lol but thanks for the fyi peeps
CJ @ Apr 8th 2009 8:09PM
bk7:
Well, TECHNICALLY a 4x4. But given that it comes as standard (the current model anyway) with magnisium-alloy rims and profile tyres, I wouldn't even attempt to take it further off road than through my horse paddock (yes, in this comment I own horses, but more to the point, I also own a hundred-and-fifty-thousand dollar SUV, so yeah.)
Michael @ Apr 8th 2009 9:37AM
I'll stick with a car that doesn't make me look like a douche bag.. nevermind a fancy display.. i'm sure you could get one fitted into a normal car that doesnt cost you the price of netbook to drive down the road to the shop.
chrismaltba @ Apr 8th 2009 9:43AM
When women see a guy riding around in a Range Rover, I don't think douche bag is the first thing that comes to mind...
Michael @ Apr 8th 2009 9:52AM
Your totally correct...
"Man.. that guy's penis must be so small..........." probably comes into there head.
Unless there less shallow than a puddle in the middle of a heatwave... then its "oo that guy has cash" but no-one value's people like that's opinons anyway ;)
There is however one exception, and thats the very few people who buy a landrover so they can drive about fields on farms.. but you can always tell.. and there very much a minority...
Interesting Fact: I live in Northern Ireland (UK) (The land with the leprachauns to those of you who are american... ;) In the past year 90% of the time i've seen a landrover (to the americans again: yes! we have cars!! we upgraded from horses and carts about a few months ago) only driven by skinny women...
/M
Col. Readily Apparent Upon Cursory Inspection @ Apr 8th 2009 10:54AM
You snarky friggin mic, I love you. Here tiny women prefer Suburbans and Escalades. Usually the people here who drive the rovers are either rappers or certified card carrying douchebags, which more often than not tend to be the same thing.
plaid thermos @ Apr 8th 2009 12:28PM
How the hell do you equate Range Rover with douche bag. What to you drive? Ford Focus ZX5 SVT...that's a douche bag car.
plaid thermos @ Apr 8th 2009 12:36PM
@michael
Wow, thanks for pointing out that Ireland is where the leprechauns are, other wise I would have been scratching my head all day trying to figure out what the "Ireland" you spoke of was, Thanks again.
Also again, thanks for setting me straight about the modes of transportation available to you bomb planting, potato eating, police murdering Catholic terrorists. I was clearly under the misguided and stereotypical assumption that you were all still riding horses while you blew up Protestants.
Col. Readily Apparent Upon Cursory Inspection @ Apr 8th 2009 1:16PM
@plaid thermos
Wow, someone needs to calm down. The vehicle doesn't equate to douchebaggery. There are plenty of good uses of a rover, just like there are for large SUV's in general. As for the general populace, it is more of a statement or status symbol. If you own a Rover and use it for what it was designed for, no complaints. It's not what you drive, but who is doing the driving.
P.S. I think mike was just trying to have a little fun. I don't think it's necessary to haul off and call the man a terrorist just because he lives in N. Ireland. And even if it wasn't just a joke, it is just the internetz my friend.
Enhance Your Calm.
Eriq @ Apr 8th 2009 9:36PM
You're an idiot LOL
Michael @ Apr 9th 2009 9:42AM
@plaid
1. It was a Joke (You do know what a joke is..) if you've managed to take it any other way than a Joke then you're clearly a fool.
2. The Northern Irish people aren't all like you seen on the news.. wouldn't that be like me turning round and assuming that all Americans hold people hostage at gunpoint at some points in lives? That all American teens go round their high school's and kill people?
Unlike yourself, I've got enough brain cells to be able to NOT generalise an entire populous based on what I've seen on the news.
3. Frankly the Joke that I made was more at my own/country's expense than at yours.
To clear any final misconceptions up:
I have nothing against the American people (You did vote Obama in...)
I know you know that Ireland: Isint full of leprechauns, Doesn't ride on horseback (Plaid said that.. not me), And does have cars...
My Main point is that anyone who buys a car that wastes so much fuel, that doesn't actually need it (buys it because they've got the money and it looks nice..) is totally wreckless.
/M
bdav @ Apr 9th 2009 12:04PM
To all you slagging off the Rangey -
Think about it this way - The 'douchebags' you so pleasantly refer to them as will have the 1st-gen 'beta' (if you will) versions, and by the time it filters down to your Focus STDs, you can probably be sure of something that has had most of the kinks ironed out.
Just a thought.
auricom @ Apr 15th 2009 11:34AM
If you just have the money you would buy the Range Rover. That's the plain hard truth.
@LeprechaunMic: You put the words into the GENERAL American people when you said
"The land with the leprachauns to those of you who are american... ;)",
and then on your reply to plaid you said: "Unlike yourself, I've got enough brain cells to be able to NOT generalise an entire populous based on what I've seen on the news."
How's that for generalizing? you, sir, are a tool.
nirgon @ Apr 8th 2009 9:43AM
I think Engadget's got the wrong end of the stick here. The 12" screen actually replaces the instrument cluster in the binacle much like the Mercedes S-Class displaying the speedometer, tach and gauges. This screen is closer to 7-8". In fact, the Revised Mertcedes S-Class also debuting at the New York show is showcasing the same technology.
Tony C @ Apr 8th 2009 10:07AM
I think you're right there. There's no way that little wide-screen center console jobbie is 12 inches. If so, those buttons, knobs and vents would be HUGE.
Tony C @ Apr 8th 2009 1:27PM
"...a new virtual gauge cluster that utilizes a 12-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen in place of traditional analog needle instruments..."

zioncat @ Apr 8th 2009 9:46AM
That may be but will the parking brake for the head unit be grounded in order to use the device while driving. Chances are no.
bdav @ Apr 9th 2009 12:06PM
*Facepalm*
The whole point of the thing is that it will play your Dora the Explorer, but the driver won't be able to see it.
Mav @ Apr 8th 2009 10:30AM
Fantastic cars but is this really going to help them, the range rover plant in Liverpool, Uk are nearly on there knees.
paragraph @ Apr 8th 2009 9:47AM
Notice how all but the last picture is left hand drive.
I like the technology, hell, i LOVE the technology, but wake me up when it's available for a nominal fee in a Camry or an Accord, not for what will most likely be more than the cost of a new desktop in a Range Rover.... who drives these?
P.S. If you opt for this package, you don't need a range rover, aint no-one ever needed to watch a DVD while Muddin' or Rock Crawlin' or Offroadin' or other such things like that there.
Tony C @ Apr 8th 2009 10:04AM
Umm... No. Look again. Only photo 3 is left hand drive. All the rest are right hand drive. Notice the placement of the Start/Stop button.
I echo the rest of your sentiment though.
CJ @ Apr 8th 2009 8:14PM
Rock crawlin'.
HAHAHAHAHA! Oh gosh, I'm sorry, but anybody who takes a Range Rover rock crawling is asking to have their diff ruined.
Ray-- @ Apr 8th 2009 9:51AM
this seems like cool tech... but not really useful here IMO.
Garrett @ Apr 8th 2009 9:57AM
sp?
In order words=In other words
Greg Combs @ Apr 8th 2009 10:16AM
Great, now you'll have something to play with while you wait for the tow truck.
B3 @ Apr 8th 2009 11:17AM
This is great and all, but hopefully putting it in park will disable it so you pull over and watch something.
William Lau @ Apr 8th 2009 10:22AM
gosh, you should embrace this tech rather than being pessimists and luddites. W221 S class led the way on night vision and the w220 led the way on distronic, so this should be a standard on most cars in a couple of years time. This is the future, Micheal, stick with your very basic 1998 corsa or whatever, times have changed, mate, it's 2009. Before you assume, I'm from the Midlands in the UK where they make Land Rovers and Jags.
jtsongas @ Apr 8th 2009 10:25AM
That is not a 12" screen and the 12" screen referred to is the instrument cluster and not the one you are featuring. Do you guys read what you are posting about?
iceman2929 @ Apr 8th 2009 11:00AM
Oh come on guys! Just because you enjoy the finer things in life doesnt make you a douche. I know people who have range rovers and i've ridden in them. They are a very smooth ride! If you have the money than there is nothing wrong with buying the nicer things out there. The only thing that makes something like this douchy are people who buy it not for the quality, but for the show aspect ( and usually those people are the one's who CAN'T afford it in the first place, putting themselves into unneeded debt.... i think we all know where this happens the most...) and the wealthy who are tacky and have to customize it, with stuff like the strut package ( gold grill, satelite tv, obnoxious colour purple... we have one of those in town...)
CJ @ Apr 8th 2009 8:18PM
You're right, in a way.
But I don't know the Land Rover situation in America, but down here, if something breaks on your range rover, expect to wait several months and several thousand dollars to get if fixed. Now, some of the Land Rovers, like the Defender, don't have as much of a problem because they're built like brick shithouses. Range Rover, not so much, it's essentially a sports car with a big body shell.
Sorry, I get rather heated when it comes to stuff like this, Off roading is something of a passion for me, and I hate seeing people buy perfectly good 4WDs and then putting 20 inch rims on it and never taking it off road.
Barri @ Apr 8th 2009 11:01AM
These companys need to take a look at the Microsoft sync system Ford uses. That thing has been able to do what this rangerover model can do and more for over the last 2 years. Climate controls via speech, Current fuel prices, Live saterlite weather infomation, Mountain ski conditions, Live sports results, Fully voice control of every funtion the system does, 2 USB ports and the many other things it does. I can even watch a dvd and get nav directions whilst driveing. Not that i would even do that.
Ben Sisco @ Apr 8th 2009 11:22AM
Does this include the Sport model?
bdav @ Apr 9th 2009 12:08PM
I would imagine the sport model would only go for an update after the discovery in the update cycle they're in, as thats where most of its components are drawn from. I may well be wrong though.
Pete Zich @ Apr 8th 2009 11:33AM
Anyone know about the dashboard? Why is there a side view of the range rover in a spotlight?
Luke @ Apr 8th 2009 12:19PM
Can the driver watch the video and the passenger watch the map, that would be dangerously cool.
MONKEY @ Apr 8th 2009 1:37PM
Sucks for whoever sits in the rear center seat.
MikeE @ Apr 8th 2009 2:15PM
there is a rear tv
CJ @ Apr 8th 2009 8:23PM
There's most likely three.
One on each headrest, and one on the roof. Come on, if you're going to pay upwards of a hundred grand on a base model, you should expect a few luxury extras.
FILA @ Apr 8th 2009 9:11PM
shittiest cars ever built. Proven and I also worked for them before, shittiest parts, everything is plastic, more then a regular car, save your money
bdav @ Apr 9th 2009 12:11PM
Everything is plastic? Have you looked at any other cars recently?
