Apple anxiously awaits the selling of their billionth App download celebration

Apple's going all out in anticipation of a landmark for the company -- the downloading of one billion apps in the App store. Not bad for nine months of work, if you think about it: over 110 million a month, in fact. About 27 million a week... well, you get the idea. Oh yeah, they're giving away a bunch of stuff too, so be sure to check that out if the mood strikes you.

Some of these are mine!!!11 =D
How long will it take the Ovi store to reach 1 billion downloads? 25 years? That's if Nokia are still around in 25 years...
eugh whenever I try and submit an entry for the competition I get this

Dyranios, I get the same thing when I try the alternative application. I just went to the iTunes store via link, and got a free app instead. But still, odd that the alternative application didn't work.
Hey, so if I win this, can I get that arm I used to pay for that MacBook pro?
I keed I keed.
I'd never buy a MBP.
@ Dyranios:
Same here. From two different machines.
sigh.

Is that all P.A.C. Man ever posts?
Weirdest troll ever.
P.A.C Man = Pathetic Analysis & Calculations Man.
@P.A.C Man
Irrelevant troll is irrelevant.
@ P.A.C.
yes we know you've already posted the exact same list at least 17 times. And we still don't care, Apple fans seem content defending the parts of their platform that are widely thought of to be good while ignoring the majority of criticism leveled at Apples obsessive control over their software/hardware locking users into a needless and expensive upgrade cycle.
I had just about all the apps listed in the contest, except for Labyrinth Lite (I have the full version, LOL) and BubbleWrap, so I guess I have little to no chance of winning this contest, but my question is: the contest states that you'll get a chance to win a 10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Do you get all of those? Or just one of them?
You probably get all of them when the millionth song was sold on iTunes or something where was no promotion like this they just rewarded the person who sold it with a buttload of stuff such as the above.
Wait, so they're not choosing people randomly, just whoever buys the billionth app? Crap, I definitely ain't winning if that's the case.
Boy, this prize is worth almost $13,400, depending of course on whether they're giving out the high end MacBook Pro and iPod Touch. Still, even if you juggle around the numbers, it's still close to $13,000 in free swag.
Why am I not eligible for the 'lucky draw'? You're selling your iPhone here in Hong Kong too, Apple...
Yeah, not only that, but the contest kind of punishes the people who have been buying all the apps from the beginning. Of course, I doubt that many people have all the apps I have, but I would say that at least 60 percent of iPhone/iPod touch owners have at least 80 percent of these apps.
Unless you're cheapskate. The cheapskates have all the free apps and maybe 3-5 of the paid games and usually only the .99 cent variety, like say Moto Chaser or Flick Fishing.
Oops, I was replying to Gus.
nah that was just an example so show its usually the one winner who gets all the swag by the looks of it, this will be a draw when the billionth is sold
@ILoveApple: How long will it take you to realize your stupidity for loving a corporation that just wants you for your money, 25 years? Never.
PAC man = Paul A Chapel, Apple uber douche.
While i recognize that there are some good apps on the Apple app store, I just came to the realization that what my professor on communication said a few years ago. He said you can sell shit and if it looks pretty people will buy it. By the huge amount of useless apps that Apple apps store has it amazes me how gullible people are.
Every time I see that stupid list it reminds me of how much duplication and worthless applications there are.
ONLY a billion downloads. That's why everyone is going to throw away their iPhones and iPod Touchs just to get their hands on a Pre because it has a keyboard and background processing. I don't think so.
This is after all those early bitching developers said that the Apple SDK is too restrictive and they were going to go to Android or WinMo. I hope those crybaby devs are sitting and writing for those platforms right now while missing out on the most exciting developer platform that hasn't been seen for a long time. Between the Android and WinMo platform, a developer might be able to make a grand sum of $5000 because the people that use those platforms don't like to spend money on anything.
By next year this time it'll be 3 billion downloads and the Pre may well be just a fading memory in some Palm lover's bottom drawer.
I wonder how many of that 1,000,000,000 will be of that sick "Baby Shaker" app?
Top 20 apps are likely fart related.
@ Lando
"Top 20 apps are likely fart related."
Wrong. Just ONE in the top 40 apps.
Top 20 Paid Apps:
Crash Bandicoot, Koi Pond, Enigmo, Bejeweled 2, iBeer, Moro Chaser, Pocket Guitar, Flick Fishing, Tertis, Texas Hold em, Super Monkey Ball, Pocket God, CroMag Rally, Ocarina, Fieldrunners, ifart, Touchgrind, iHunt, iShoot and Monopoly
Top 20 Free Apps
Facebook, Google Earth, Pandora, Tap tap revenge, Shazam, Packman Ligt, Backgrounds, Touch Hockey, Labyrinth, Flashlight, Urban Spoon, Movvies, iBowl, Light Saber Unleashed, Sol Free Solitaire, MySpace Mobile, Virtual Zippo, Weather Channel, Bubble Wrap and Remote.
@RattyUK
(see:joke)
Why, you slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler!
Hey, if Lando says so, so it must be.
@DirtyVegas
Damn straight.
I'm very surprised that Rolando didn't make it in the top 40 apps. It's probably the best designed and most innovative app to come to the App Store. Rolando is the kind of game that could only happen on the iPhone or iPod touch.
"Facebook, Google Earth, Pandora, Tap tap revenge, Shazam, Packman Ligt, Backgrounds, Touch Hockey, Labyrinth, Flashlight, Urban Spoon, Movvies, iBowl, Light Saber Unleashed, Sol Free Solitaire, MySpace Mobile, Virtual Zippo, Weather Channel, Bubble Wrap and Remote"
What, no Shozu?
Weird!
The fact that there is even one in the top 40 is sad.
So does this mean that when the time comes close we can just download like 500 free apps and we'll have a better chance of winning? :D
Yeah, it looks that way. If I am reading the rules correctly, then after 999,999,999 downloads, the prize gets awarded to the next entry (either someone downloading the 1,000,000,000th app OR someone sending in the no-purchase-necessary form.)
No. The promotion is as follows. Any entries (download of apps) received between 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 10, 2009 and the one billionth download is equally capable of winning a prize. It doesn't matter if you are the billionth download or not. So if you download one app, you have one chance at winning a prize. If you download 1000 apps, you have 1000 chances of winning a prize. It doesn't matter when you download an app. Each download has an equal chance of winning a prize.
And the prizes are separate. One person wins a 17" Macbook Pro. Another person wins the iPod Touch (32GB), third will win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Certificate, and a fourth person will win an Apple Time Capsule. They're all separate prizes.
300 of them are mine
Why, that's 4-5 apps a second! Good show, Apple.
actually over 44 apps a second...
2.7e6/7/24/60/60=4.46
why obsessed with all the math? chillax man
except for the fact it's 27 million a week and not 2.7... 1,000,000,000/9 = 111,111,111/4 = 27,777,777/7 = 3,968,254/24 = 165344/60 = 2756/60 = 45.9 a second
your welcome for the math lesson
Thanks Engadget for the mis-information.
Looks like they corrected it.
godayum I hate Maths
@ bassist18:
"your welcome"?
Good thing YOU'RE good at math. English doesn't seem to be YOUR strong suit.
He said "Your welcome" because he deserved a thanks, English doesn't seem to be YOUR strong suit
its a contraction of YOU ARE.
therefore you're.
and yes, you're welcome.
What's the average price for an app? That's some serious moolah.
Most apps are free. Say 10% are paid, and a $1. They get 30% of revenue, that's about 30 million. Subtract advertising, hosting, bandwidth, web design, and other overhead, probably 20 million or so in net revenue. The app store is not really a revenue source. It's like the iTunes music store: a very convincing means to sell hardware.
theres no doubt that the great majority of these are free apps (which makes the term "selling" kind of dubious). the app store makes it very easy to find and download a bunch of free apps, try them out, and delete them, whereas with WinMo you have to go search the internet. the "marketplace" for WinMo should help that a lot.
