Sony X-Series Walkman gets the hands-on video treatment

We've already seen a somewhat underwhelming official video of Sony's new X-Series Walkman (or NWZ-1060, to be specific), but anyone seriously considering the touchscreen PMP will no doubt also want to check out CNET Asia's new hands-on video, which offers a decidedly less controlled look at the device in action. That includes a glimpse of the Walkman's seemingly speedy album art browsing mode, a better look at the trademark granite edge surrounding the device and, of course, a full overview of those dedicated control buttons that allow for non-touchscreen use. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.

Wow. It looks ugly as sin. Another run of the mill PMP, they don't bring anything new to the table. Boo-urns...
A long long time ago, on a media player far far away.
hahaha. Sony's attempt is truly laughable. This thing can't touch the Apple iPod touch and the iPhone. The design is so ugly, I mean, what's with that dirt like finish? Also, they attempted to ripoff coverflow and the home button on front.
Sorry, but the iPods are still the best DAP on the planet.
I'd get an iPod if it didn't sound like shit.
And where do you think Apple got the coverflow design? Right, Windows XP's filmstrip.
I was unaware that Apple was the first company to place a button that brings you back to your home page on the front of their device. Silly me, I've been buying phones that place the home button underneath the battery cover.
rcarm, apple never got coverflow from filmstrip. they bought out a small companys idea that had coverflow as a standalone addition to itunes. a very microsoft-like move.
Ok bottom line question will this kill the iPod touch movemnt and revolution,34,000 apps etc or even make a dent here in America ,.?
That's the real question ,Sony had 16 months to clone touch.
If success was measured by the ability to "kill" another product, then everyone in this world would be a failure, including Apple (OS X catching up with Windows yet?)
Here's the thing about the apps, most of those apps are dependent on WiFi, and usually if I'm in WiFi, I can bring my laptop and listen to Pandora just as easily. If not, then I'll have to SETTLE with my normal music that I like. The fact that the iPod Touch has Safari and the App Store is cool, but it's so WiFi dependent that I honestly don't care. Of all of the non-WiFi dependent apps in the App Store, most of those are total gimmicks, (Jelly Car, iSteam, That's What She Said). Most people get bored of the little games a few months after getting the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch does them really well, but paying so much for a device where you cannot access the coolest features 90% of the time is annoying.
I would much rather have a device that can have great sound quality, great video quality, and all of the features Apple never includes, (like FM radio, Bluetooth, Voice Recording, Customizable UI). These are the things that other companies put in their MP3 players. These are the things I want. The iPod touch is nice, and it's a consideration, but I'd rather go for a Samsung P3.

Pretty cool device... I like the screen, side buttons, and the bundled active noise cancelling earbuds. Sony's got some good ideas.
But one thing Sony lacks in is software. Most hardware companies, in fact, seem to lack in software. I had a Sony Walkman NWZ series last year, and the desktop syncing software was just horrible... what a sluggish and memory-hogging POS it was.
that cover flow like feature is pretty cool, and web browsing looks pretty good too.
The specs and the features look really good on paper, but I doubt it would threaten the sales of iPods... but that's not really news now, is it?
Fanboyism aside.
iPod touch/iPhone are still light years ahead
Of the competition on a global scale.
Let's be honest here , I am a sony fanboy.
Experia raped j owned by iPhone .
This raped n owned by touch.
Plus engadgeters voted iPhone as top
Dawg smartphone n touch as king of pmps.
Ever heard of the cowon s9? (of course not....) It is the best PMP ever made because it does what a PMP is supposed to do better than anything else. Check it out my friend...
PS- it looks way better than the ipod touch (hey, it could matter to the man...)
Umm, the iphone and ipod touch are just getting bluetooth, and copy-and-paste among other functions that other phones/mp3 players have had for years now.
How are they light years ahead?, the only thing that puts iphone on par is the multitouch and even so that does not necessarily add functionality so infact they are not ahead at all.
"Fanboyism aside".....?
iPod/iPhone aren't light years ahead. Otherwise copy/paste wouldn't be an up-coming feature, and multitasking would be possible. They are the more popular devices, but they are NOT the most technologically advanced devices.
And I wouldn't call an Engadget poll for Gadget of the Year as an accurate way of measuring anything except for fanboyism. The Zune and Storm don't deserve the titles of Worst Gadget of the Year.

Was that some kind of haiku? I like it.
Sony Software Sucks. Period!
Looks pretty "meh" to me. And that browser looked atrocious. Don't think Sony has an iPod Touch competitor here, at least not in the states.
If you were going to knock off a feature, why did you have to make it Coverflow? Coverflow is essentially useless to me, and I'm sure only a handfull of people actually use it to select their tunes.
For me, I am waiting to try it's built-in S-master for a long time.
So basically what it boils down to is...
If you want quality apps, web browsing screen estate go for the touch.
If you want quality audio, headphones and screen pick the X series.
Both products have their strengths and weakness it just comes down to what you want. I love the idea of surfing the web and playing games when im bored but i also love the simplicity of drag and drop this function is essential for me. I hate proprietary programmes for transferring music, that is why i currently have a 1gb Creative lol.
Im going to buy a pmp soon and i will probably pick the Sony as i mainly use my device for listening to music, it appears the X series is designed for doing just that. Plus, apples head phones are a joke, why did they design headphones that force everyone else on the bus to listen to someone elses music?
Im still not sure though, more contructive discussion is needed :)
