Canon Rebel T1i / 500D gets unboxed
Sure, we've already seen a couple video clips, but Canon's new EOS Rebel T1i / 500D certainly deserves a proper unboxing, don't you think? Nothing you probably don't already know if you're into this cam, but we will say the menu screen looks a little nicer than on previous models. Hit the read links for the full rundown.

I just bought the 40d a couple months ago and I am disappointed I should of waited. The sensor size of the 500d is the same as the 50d
The 40d also has the same sensor size as the 50d and 500d. And if you're dissapointed with the 40d the 500d probably isn't the right camera for you anyway (unless you think the 40d is too big, and you feel that you don't need the 40d's speed and so on).
Unless you really want the HD video capability, the 40D is still a better still camera than the 500d. To do better than your 40D, and get HD video, you'd need to step up to a 5D Mark II (which is a superb camera, don't borrow one if you can't afford to then buy one!).
"The 40d also has the same sensor size as the 50d and 500d. And if you're dissapointed with the 40d the 500d probably isn't the right camera for you anyway (unless you think the 40d is too big, and you feel that you don't need the 40d's speed and so on)."
40D is 10 mp and 50D/500D is 15 mp
The 50D & 500D have more megapixels but the actual physical dimensions of the CMOS sensor are the same. That what the above confusion is about, you are both right in a way.
The increase in megapixels in the 500D & 50D over the 40D are not a positive one, in the cons section of the 50D review conclusion on dpreview.com it says the 50D has worse noise at higher ISO then the 40D.
I would much rather have a 40D over the 500D or 50D do to is superior low light shooting capabilities. More megapixels crammed into the same size sensor is not always a good thing and it is getting to the point of stupidity. It is actual starting to hurt low light image quality. This is very similar to the megahertz race of the 90's, most of us know now megahertz has very little to do actual computing speed.
Also the 50D & 500D do not have the same sensor, the sensor used in the 50D have gapless micro lenses while the 500D sensor has gaps between its micro lenses.
The 40D vs 50D noise debate is a heated one technically, While yes it has more noise than the 40D, most users report that in practice, you just cant really see a difference unless you're shooting a big black wall...
Yes, the box really wants his cd back asap!
Yeah, what's with the handwritten cd title??
Yeah that's hilarious...
No, the CD wants the box back, but the box doesn't love him anymore...
Haha... I suppose cannon uses cannon printers to print the lables... they clearly ran out of toner.
And I thought that only happened to me :)
that would be cool if thats how they all came. i would get it just for that disc
It would be nice if it was personalized and it read, "Insert CD to install, Matt..."
Your idea will just live on as a dream... Just a dream :(
This is because it is a loaner camera sent out by canon, it is not a retail purchased camera. Canon like many other companies send out pre-sales versions of their product to reviewers that must be returned after the reviewer has had a go with it.

Whoever took these shots needs to ease up on the lens aperture. What's the use of these unboxing shots if 90% of the photo is "artistically" blurred? You can't see any detail in the closeups.
relax. :)
Or PREPARE TO MEET YOU'RE DOOM
for a photography website, they sure did take some lousy photos of that camera. with that nice new T1i maybe they can try some manual settings on the next product unboxing to get a little more depth of field.
Manual settings were used... was shot in 10 minutes, had little available light, no tripod, and didn't expect the images to be so popular!
Hmmm, more DOF say you? Less DOF say others, can't please everyone...
My question/gripe: 1080p @ 20fps... not 24fps?!? Stupid marketing driven limitation I'm sure as would be the inability to output 1080p live thru the HDMI, probably 1/2 rez.
This is obviously one of the preview copies of the camera - since it won't be available until May. The production release won't have a hand written CD :)
I'm curious about the white battery too - aren't all canon batteries black?
my 450d has a battery like the one in the pictures, but hey thats just me. its my first canon.
*yawn* Another disgusting product from one of the worst camera manufacturers, Canon. What a shame. Just another piece of crap, just like the company.
Get a life. Get a Nikon, a real camera.
/fanboy
Get a camera that can autofocus without using the kit lens. Get anything OTHER than a Nikon.
That's got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Canon are a fine camera company; how are they at any point, except in your silly fanboy mind, one of the worst camera companies?
Get a life, take some pictures.
You sir, are an idiot.
Maan talk about the douche bags of all douche bags.
The majority of all your posts contain the word(s) "trash" and "piece of crap." How lame are you?
Seriously, how freakin' lame are you?!
I always thought there were two schools of people who buy pro(sumer) cameras - and always thought it was the slightly more arrogant type who bought Nikon. You're not helping my minds stereotype.
ISO 12800 makes this better than any other camera in the same price range be it Canon or Nikon.
ISO 12800?! Ha, I'm guessing you aren't much of a photographer! You can't just judge it based on the fact they have the biggest number... 10:1 on a APS-C sensor it will look like rubbish...Check out dxomark.com or dpreview.com to see what I mean...
No one expects crystal clear results @ H2 -- I'm just pointing out that it is capable of reaching it if necessary. The 500D vs the 5D Mark II @ ISO 1600 look pretty damn silimar for being APCS vs Full frame. That's as high as I'd like to take the ISO anyhow.
Take a look: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/03/canon_rebel_t1i_handson_50ds_sensor_1080p_vids_899_-2.html
Gonna pick one of these up when they go on sale on May. It looks great
So many awesome cameras to choose from, what's a guy to do?!
6400, my fault
Didn't realize they'd added the processor from the 5D II, yeah that'll help!
O_o Don't forget to return the CD to the box!
idiot
The perfect camera for the guy who has had a Rebel, 10D, 30D or 40D and is looking for the next step, but not ready for that 5D.
Eh...
I have a 30D and I'm waiting for the successor to the 50D....
Dont get me wrong, love the 50D, love the 500D..but I want 2 command dials and the build/ergonomics of the xxD line
I also do a lot of stuff involving high frame advance and cant justify a 1D just yet..which is why I dont want -just- the 5D....I'd miss my 1.6x crop and my 6fps shooting a lot [That said, If I had a 5D I'd get excellent wide angles and excellent high ISO performance....so I actually want both..but the xxD does more for me more of the time..]
Looks like this isn't a real unboxing. Someone got a preview unit with a CD labelled with a sharpie.
sick!
Why is this the first time it's been called the 500D?.. I've been waiting for ages for Engadget to call it by its non-American name, if only so the readers in the rest of the world can figure out that that 500D on the shelf is the same camera as the T1i on Engadget..
Sorry I've just been a little miffed by the American-focus of Engadget lately.. things like "the price of 2 Benjamins" and "back during the Nixon administration".. can we have an international version of Engadget that doesn't assume the reader has lived in the US before? Sure I can go find out what they're supposed to mean but that's just annoying..
And yes I realise Engadget is based in the US but a little global sensitivity can't hurt anyone :)
/rant
Apparently you missed the Engadget post advertising for British (preferably London) based writers.
I'm not asking for new writers.. just for Engadget to have plain-English "translations" when they use American-oriented language, say as a hover-over (alt text – ok so not exactly an "international version" but anyway..)
And I don't live anywhere near London; I'm not even in the same hemisphere. I'm not a writer either so that's all moot anyway :P
I can Trade my 450D for this?
DPReview will have the most comprehensive review. Can't wait to see it!
so based on a scale of 1-10, how much would you grade the 500D????????
