Special Edition Advent Children PlayStation 3 unboxed in all its matte glory
There's a lot to love about the special edition 160GB Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete Cloud Black PlayStation 3 bundle that was unleashed this week in Japan -- a fancy Strife Wolf emblem, a copy of Advent Children Complete on Blu-ray, and a Final Fantasy XIII demo you can't play anywhere else -- but perhaps our favorite part is the console's matte finish. For us, a smudge-resistant PS3 is well worth the 49,980 yen (US $505) price of admission. 1UP has the unboxing, hit up the read link for more pics.

I cant wait till the whole ultra-mega-super gloss phase finishes. It looks nice in promo pics and if you never touch it but matte is much better in reality.
Sony make such nice hardware, its a shame they pretty much priced themselves out of the game. Including blu-ray was a big mistake.
That is easily the stupidest comment I've seen on engadget in a few days. In no way, shape, or form has Sony priced themselves out of the game. Including BluRay was a master stroke of genius as their propietary format is now the next-gen media of the future. Their loss-leading price of only $400 for a BluRay player, next-gen video game console, and networked media server with free online multiplayer is absolutely the best value available and is WELL underpriced. EXTREMELY underpriced. They have the most advanced hardware which allows more breathing room for future software development, the best and most-featured media on which to develop on, the most studio and game-maker support, and - for the most part - the most recognizable and desirable exclusives (general and relative statement which does not include Halo or Gears Of War). Essentially the only stupid move Sony has done is removed the backwards compatibility feature from current models. This eliminates yet another checkmark in Sony's corner - the largest back-catalog library available.
The Wii is overpriced @ $250 (shouldve been $200 and now $150). It's certainly a lot of fun, but it's novelty diminishes over time and there isn't much substance to make up for it, other than maybe the Wii store and classic games. Perhaps the WiiMotion Plus will be a much-needed boost for it. Sure it's selling like hotcakes (except when the PS3 outsells it every now and then), but you have to know a lot of that is due to its low price-point and family-friendly appearance.. not because it's the best platform with the best features and games and the most desired among the true gaming crowd.
The X360 is a fantastic console with tons of support,a year's headstart on titles and next-gen adoption rates, and a great - albeit fee-based - online service. It certainly is a worthy competitor with checkmarks in it's corner that Sony needs (once-exclusives being released on 360 as well a la Assassin's Creed, GTA4 & number of players online among others). However, purely from a price perspective since that is what the main focus is here, it is still less of a value than the PS3. It's price point is the same and it has much less features.
Perhaps I jumped the gun though, and you're comment was simply from misinformation or misunderstanding, not stupidity. For that, I apologize. That being said, it is undeniable that there is no better value for your money than the relatively future-proof PS3. It's price of $400 is ridiculously low and should probably be almost double that. If you realized that it costs Sony $800+ just to make a PS3 and factor in normal retail markups.. you're looking at a $1,000 item that constantly 60% off, brand new w/ warranty. Once you pop in your first BluRay, or play a 1080p game in full ACTUAL 5.1 surround, or connect to your home PC or server via WiFi and stream your 'backup' BluRays or DVDs\TV shows in virtually any codec, etc... you'll have to pick your jaw up off the floor from realizing just how amazing of a deal you got in purchasing one.
haha that must of taken u awhile to write up :-P
I hope and pray Blu ray will never become the next gen media format for many reasons which i honestly couldnt be bothered going into.
The PS3 is obviously the lowest selling console thus far, including blu ray has provided no benefits thus far and increased the price substantially.
It simply wasnt needed in this generation. Yes they MAY has set themselves up for the next generation but only time can tell.
Blu-ray may have one the war, but was it really a victory? Do people want or need blu ray for movies let alone gaming. In my opinion...no.
@lwright84 umm, wow, all Adderz did was say the PS3 is expensive, not beat up your dog...
Yes lwright84, you jumped the gun there. Zeroing in on him saying the PS3 was expensive and then ranting on and on about it was a tad silly - especially after stating his comment was the dumbest you have seen in a while. Was there really a need to foam at the mouth and attack like that? I don't think so. Was saying Blu-ray was a mistake that stupid to do - no, considering it’s his opinion and that they are in 3rd place and people (who don't read tech blogs all day) are not flocking to switch from DVD. The Blu-ray did raise the price of the PS3 and set it outside of many buyers budget. It doesn't hurt the love of my PS3 to have people state valid points, why does it threaten you so much?
Addressing his more leading point, the matte finish looks nice and probably would be a better design for end users as the gloss finish is a dust magnet that gets all finger printed too fast. This finish would be a great buy to me.
@lwright84:
Last time I checked, the only market the PS3 has ever outsold the WII in was Japan. The very same Japan where the Xbox 360, despite traditionally poor sales in the market, has been known to outsell the PS3 as often (and the WII as well in one occasion), or even more often than the PS3 has outsold the WII.
Also, since when does the Xbox 360's pricepoint match the PS3? Only the Elite model is priced the same as the cheaper of the two PS3 models, wheras the cheapest 360 model, which is perfectly usable without addition by most people, is about half that. Its the cheapes console in the market by about $50.
Finally, considering the fact that the xbox 360 costs $200 and a blu-ray player can be had for $190, the PS3 doesn't represent amazing value, just average value. Yes, you can say that It is a better blu-ray player than the cheapest one on the market by quite a bit, but for people that are looking for entertainment on a budget, they either don't have the necessary home theatre equipment to tell the difference, or wouldn't really use the extra features of the ps3.
As for the streaming media related comments: really? You're saying one of the PS3's advantages over the 360 is streaming media in almost any codec? You realize they support virtually the same codecs, and frankly I prefer the look of the 360's interface, although I'll give you that the PS3's feel's a bit faster. As for the wifi support, honestly, neither I nor any other PS3 owner I know use wifi to connect our PS3s to the internet; we all use ethernet, as it provides lower latency when gaming online. Though if you really want/need it, then yeah, the PS3 has the price advantage, and you can find $50 adapters online along with instructions on how to use them.
And finally, man do I hate the glossy finish on the ps3. Or on anything really.
Note: I'm not trying to advocate one console over another, I'm just trying to say that the 360 and the PS3 are pretty much the same to the average user, and both are more than adequate as gaming consoles/media platforms. Honestly, I have both, and they get pretty much the same amount of use, and besides my preference of the 360 controller, I can't say I prefer one over the other. My dust covered, seldom used wii on the other hand...
Didn't read everything but I agree PS3 is expensive :P
A limited Edition next to the Metal Gear Solid 4 Gun Metal PS3.
:)
can't wait to see Advent Children in HD!!! (even though its over 3 years old)
A coat of paint hideth a world of sins.
Any landlord can tell you THAT.
Is this the new version that is totally without b/c? I assume it is just making sure.
BC is long gone now... just use your ps2 :P
For the record, ALL PS3s are PS1 BC. Sorry, but it annoys me when people claim certain models are non-BC. Current models are not PS2 BC, but play PS1 games just fine.
wow look pretty nice =)
Wow the box looks amazing.
That's about it.
My copy of the movie and game demo just shipped. I hope I can get through the demo, Unfortunately i cannot read Japanese.
Personal FAIL.
Apparently it's all in English so no Fail for you today.....
So any ETA on when the US is getting this deal?
ETA: NEVER EVER EVER IN A MILLION BILLION TRILLION YEARS! That answer your question?
wow..thanks for that amazing and detailed insight on the consoles.
Let me know when you're selling a special edition PS3 with a new revamped version of Final Fantasy VII on it and we'll talk. I swear, SquareEnix must hate money.
The Cause, the cause they're just doin it for the cause.~NOFX
Though, FWIW, this should be able to play the original FF VII (and all other PS1 games) just fine.
PS2 backwards compatibility is still a glaring omission, though. They'd do so much better keeping PS2 owners on the Sony platform if they hadn't gotten rid of it.
@ Duke
I like how you try to not be perceived as a fanboy by indicating PS3 ownership. lol
"I'm not a racist, some of my best friends are black"
Iwright84 was clearly at his ignorance limit and even apologized for possibly overstepping his bounds.
Tardgogglery is why the PS3 is in 'third place'. Third place as in the wii with $80 hardware selling for $!250 is now in the same market as 'hd' consoles. Third place as in suspect xbox360 actual sell through numbers with a year lead.
Really, who is actually "Foam at the mouth"-ing and who is threatened?
Adding bluray is a strategy that is still paying dividends that will only grow with the growth of HDtv.
How was sony to know the lack of discernment amongst gamers, claimed audiophiles and hdtv owners this generation? Tardgogglery is relatively new this generation after all.
Iwright84's issue appears to be that he can't understand why people don't see the value and use the same fanboy arguments to detract from the PS3's actual value.
Bluray disk with durabis is integral to the PS3 experience, as a fellow PS3 owner I'm unsure why you don't understand that.
No matter what, the PS3 is still my favorite.
That PS3 is awesome
ps3 is cool
Sony really needs to stop calling paint jobs special editions. I just looked up the PS3 wiki page to see the difference between the old skus and the new skus and..........
Wow do the new skus suck or what? no SACD, no card reader, no PS2 b/c.
So I'm looking about my first rev PS3 thinking, please don't ever break down, because I don't want to fork out another $400 for a new gimped console. I don't want to digg my PS2 out of the dark corner and plug composite cables into my HDTV so I can play FFXII for 20 minutes.
If you want to push a higher end sku, put everything back in there, I don't think people forking $500 for a special paint job will mind if u charge $25 more and have SACD, card reader and b/c.
Sure, a lot of people won't need it, but first, for those of us that do, its annoying that its gone, and second, high-end skus are never targeted at "most people"
Sony, your entire product lineup is based on the idea of "a little bit more feature, a whole lot more price markup", I donno get why you can't get it right with the PS3.
Ha-La-Loo-Yay Brother! Where's our Backwards Compatibility, Sony! THAT should be the premium version, one with a full Emotion Engine in it again!
So, if the Final Fantasy PS3 is $500, how much would it cost for a Fully Backwards Compatible PS3 to be available again? $600? $800???
Give us something we REALLY want, SONY!
Yummy!!! I think I can have this for desert!!!!
For those of you complaining about the removal of the extra features (specially backwards compatibility), i hope you're not the same ones that were complaining that $600 was too much for a game console.
I paid my $600 gladly and have enjoyed every day of my 60GB PS3. I take care of it like it was my baby, cause if it ever dies i know i'll be on ebay paying out of my butthole for a 60GB.
I have to thank all the cheap, broke-a$$ whiners for making Sony get rid of the extra features to bring costs down. You should all go get a real job so you can afford a decent piece of hardware and we're not stuck in a world filled with with last-gen graphics consoles that sell thru gimicks and cheap pieces of crap hardware with 1 year life expectancies (that moronic developers continue supporting since it sells well).
