Windows 7 RC coming May 5 for public consumption, out now for MSDN / TechNet subscribers?
It's not as good as gold, but according to Microsoft's Partner Program website, Windows 7's release candidate is due out to the masses on May 5, a bit earlier than the BBC report had previously noted. MSDN and TechNet subscribers can apparently download the new build now, although Ars Technica is reporting it may not be up just yet. There's always the chance that this date was posted in error or will be pushed back, so in the meantime, perhaps marking your calendar with pencil or erasable pen isn't such a bad idea.

I got Windows 7 build 7077 (so many sevens it has to be good)
what build number will this be?
7100
i had to go to 7068 from 7077 because the internet connection kept failing with 7077. it would say its online, but its not, and then i would get lock ups, it wasnt fun.
i thought it was supposed to be 7109 internally last week, i may be mistaken...
It wouldn't make sense if it was anything before or including 7106, since that was the latest NON-RC leaked build.
Not on my MSDN or partner site yet... Guess I can enjoy being outside this weekend
tight
Right
Still not on technet for me either...
Office 2010 is scheduled to be released this year, Windows Mobile 6.5 to officially "launch" on May 11, Microsoft working on a new Zune HD for this year and now Windows 7 RC coming May 5 for public consumption, OMG, I think the Redmond floor is going to be pretty busy this year. Hopefully MS would bring all these huge products without any disappointments this time.
I think if people are willing to give Microsoft a try they will be very impressed!
Adam,
It never fails to boggle my mind when folks claim that people don't "give Microsoft a try" like a massive corporation that controls the computing experience of most of the world is somehow the underdog. We *all* give them a try. My home and work desktops are Macs, but I use an XP laptop at least once or twice a week, and I grew up on MS software. The reason people dislike MS is not because they hear FUD, it's BECAUSE they use the products.
If Windows 7 turns out to be a big jump in usability and speed, I'll look forward to getting my corp laptop image upgraded as soon as it's available to me.
who are these "people" you refer to? I consider myself a "person" and I use and enjoy windows. I tried OS X and I didn't like it at all.
I didn't say people couldn't prefer Windows. My point is that people who prefer OS X are not being misled. Virtually every Mac user I know uses Windows occasionally, either by choice or because they have to (supporting friends and family, employer-required, etc). So Microsoft is winning the FUD wars, not Apple.
USE is correct that the "people aren't giving MS a try" arguments are rubbish. I'm a Mac user, but I see Windows everywhere. I use it often, just not at home. I know what the OS does, and if it improves, I'll be sure to notice. I think the same applies to most people. We're exposed to Microsoft's products no matter what, so we do give them a try.
That's not to say that all their products are bad. Windows 7 looks live an improvement. Office on Windows is pretty good. Windows Mobile isn't.
To clarify, Office 2010 will be released next year although a beta may come out later this year.
"Hopefully MS would bring all these huge products without any disappointments this time." - Muneeswaran
Um, this is *Microsoft* we're talking about. Prepare to be disappointed...
"My point is that people who prefer OS X are not being misled"
Misled into enjoying the smell of their own farts TOO MUCH.
Well this one will find its way onto my laptop. That'll be the argument in my laptop purchase battle between a Windows Sev7n machine and a MB. But I think that Microsoft is going to be pretty badass this year with all of these news things coming out.
This bit in the ad:
"Since this is not the final release, your PC will gather and send information to Microsoft engineers to help them check the fixes and changes made based on testing of Windows 7 Beta"
Just how much and what type of information would Microsoft be gathering?
If you don't like the policy, don't use it! The RTM won't have this.
Probably nothing they didn't already get when you installed the beta.
Hello, I'm a stupid person. I install betas without reading the agreements and expect them to run perfectly fine, I also send my bank account information to the Nigerian prince in order to get a million dollar after a week, then I click on a link to collect my prize for being the 1,000,000 visitor.
I pledge to blame Microsoft Corp. for any bad thing that would happen to my life, because Microsoft has lots of money, they clearly are evil.
Oh chill out guys, I'm not trolling, happy Vista owner here! It's just that I'm looking forward to the final build of Windows 7 (excuse to buy a new laptop!) and was excited by this news of an advance copy. But not if I'm being monitored from above by Big Brother, I'll wait till next year, thanks...
Escapist.. haha sorry you got attacked there! Windows guys are a bit sensitive around here (for good reason!) But I think your question is a good one, go to google and type this exact search string (windows 7 beta "gather information" to microsoft) and click on the top link. It links to a site that I don't think engadget wants us to link to here but it pretty much answers your very valid question.
I'll do that, thanks.
Read that link patriotsn1, cheers. Think I'll wait for the final retail release! :D
Will 7 be as/more successful as XP,
HOPE!
XP was a dog before SP2, why do people forget that ?
The other thing that people tend to forget is that by 2006 everyone was crying out for Vista to be released.
It's already out, my brother works in an office that's had it for at least two weeks (so far as he tells me). Sadly, my cries of "can I has?" have thus far fallen on deaf ears.
Your brother's office pirates software too? Half the net has had it for a couple weeks.
seriously why do people care? i am dualbooting the ubuntu 9.04 beta and the windows 7 beta and i really can't remember the last time i booted windows 7. sure it's an improvement for windows but compared to ubuntu it seems like it's way behind
hey, can you show me how to install Crysis on Ubuntu 9.04, or 8.04, or 10.04...
after your done with that, show me how to install Office 2007 cause Open Office is shit.
thanks,
look forward to reading your response.
Actually, having been using Ubuntu as my primary OS for quite some time, I've barely used it since Win7 beta came out. I like both, but Microsoft has got a real winer with this one
I'm actually holding off on getting Jaunty right away until Win7 RC is out, that way I can just reformat my whole machine instead of messing with my partitions again.
El Sword - not to belittle Ubuntu but how easy is it to join to your office domain?
I don't run Ubuntu so be fore I tried it I'd like to know many things like -Do you have a sonicwall or other VPN client that works with your office? What games are available for it? How well does the Adobe suite work with it? What financial software such as Quickbooks do you run on it? Are there a good set of apps for HP scanners and the like? How well does remote desktop to your office Terminal Server work?
And what do i do if i want to plugin a bluetooth dongle and use it briefly ? Oh several coding trips same with my Wifi dongle, damn ! thats easy to use !
When Linux can run Photoshop, Lightroom, Microsoft Expression. Office, my accounting software and all the other software I have to use daily for my business I will switch. Linux is fine for playing around, but when you have to do real work I don't see how you could use it.
well Max PL you can install MS Office with WINE. i'm not sure Crysis would run so well under WINE though.
I guess the RTM would be something like 7777
Will it constantly do 7777 damage too?
Update: The page appears to be an accidental post, and Windows 7 Center was told that the download will not be available on MSDN or Technet for a while. The page will likely be taken down,
http://windows7center.com/news/windows-7-release-candidate-to-be-released-on-may-5th/
bummer! but hey at least I don't have to reinstall three PCs over the weekend.
yes office 2007 runs fine in crossover linux and no i can't run chrysis but i don't care since i don't play games on my pc i play on my consoles for that
What's with all the confusion?
It's Windows 7
Version 6.1
Build 7100
Makes perfect sense! :p
Windows 7 is the official marketing name.
6.1 is the kernel version. It's not 7 in order to help compatibility.
Builds are used when developing software.
The download is not available. The page is an accidental post.
