Samsung's 10.1-inch N120 netbook now on sale
Samsung's long-awaited (okay, so we made that part up) N120 netbook has finally transitioned from "might ship someday, maybe" to "oh, I'm definitely shipping." Consumers interested in the 10.1-inch, 2.8 pound netbook can surf over now to Amazon and order one up in black or white for the not-totally-tantalizing price of $465.99. If you've forgotten what all that buys you, here's a rundown, and feel free to say it with us in unison: 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Windows XP Home, a 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, 6-cell battery, a 3-in-1 multicard reader, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and an Ethernet jack for good measure. Oh, and there's a "2.1-channel" sound system, for whatever that's worth.

Netbooks $465.99?
What a bargain.
That is a bargain for me.
Shop around you can get a better deal... unless you MUST own a Samsung.
I like Samsung products, but the Eee PC 1000HE blows this one out of the water and is much less than $400 at a lot of places. Plus it has the newer N280 Atom with higher bus speeds. And the keyboard is awesome.
Haha, Amazon has the OS listed as XP Home SP 4. That's new, even to Microsoft.
No one has reviewed it yet to the best of my knowledge, so I'm not sure how we can magically deduce that the Asus 1000HE blows it out of the water. Lots of people bought the Samsung NC10 SE from Amazon for $469 even after the Asus 1000HE was out, so apparently not everyone agrees that the Asus 1000HE is the be all, end all, cream of the crop 6 cell 10.1" netbook.
10.5 hour battery!!!
"Oh, and there's a "2.1-channel" sound system..."
So, does this make it the first netbook with a sub?
Or is that just marketing fluff?
Fluff.
Technically a subwoofer ".1" must be 8" or larger.
"...and feel free to say it with us in unison"
Arg, because of that little comment I heard a 3rd grade class reading the specs out loud to me in my head.
That pretty much has the exact same spec as every other notebook for $100+ more....
10.5 hour battery?
More of the same Garbage
Do you think Samsung will let me trade in my Sammy NC10 for this? I feel cheated. Those speakers mounted on the LCD are a smack in the face if you've ever spent any time "listening" to something coming out of the NC10.
The speakers on the NC-10 are mostly quiet due to the default settings. Go to the Control Panel, Sound Speech and Audio Devices, then Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager. In there, uncheck the "Karaoke" checkbox and set it to 0. Then turn the equalizers to max. Also in Sound, Speech, Audio Devices make sure both speakers are equal as sometimes one is set to off. sammynetbook.com has more help for this issue.
When are they gonna start putting dual core atoms in these?
sometime after 7 comes out..ide say 6 months to 1 year..
just long enoff for 7 to take down roots and kill off xp
but expect them to be 650+ -.-'
I'd pay $650 if they would use the Ion Platform with a Dual Core Atom and Windows 7. I sure as hell hope they can get all that in for $200.
Just like Philip says, it will be a wait of around 6 months, after Intel releases their new Pineview Atoms. I think the reason there are no dual-core atoms in netbooks now, is because of a heat issue and obvious lowered battery life. The new atoms should be smaller and take less power, so that's less heat in the dual-core ver. Just gotta wait on Intel and hope they don't pull a fast one and make dual-core Atoms only available to nettops again.
If this just had 3G it would be what i was looking for. It's like each netbook has all i want but one thing like no multi-card reader, no 3g, no higher capacity battery. I'm still waiting for the netbook to be refined so I can really use it as a nice web/photo sidekick.
just storing my password, dont mind me
It looks stylish but i'm not going to pay $100 more for a 'netbook' that has a similar spec as the ASUS 1000HE. In fact, Asus is slightly faster with its new N280 1.66 Ghz CPU. I personally don't think there is a noticeable improvement using a newer chip but it's still a newer chip. It is true that the speaker on Asus is not impressive at all. Unfortunately, I'm not going to pay more for the speakers and subwoofer on this Samsung. Sorry.
Besides which, the speakers on the 1000H (and I'm assuming by extension the 1000HE) are actually very good quality.
Why netbooks prices vary so much? They are all the same. No one is pushing the boundaries or doing something a bit different. Same processor, 1gb Ram, 160Gb HD or smaller SSD. It's the same garbage again and again. Are they built in the same factory too?
Microsoft limits the specs of netbooks to exactly that setup or they won't allow the cheap version of XP to be installed. Microsoft wanted to only allow Vista, but the manufactures finally got them to concede that Vista wouldn't work on such small machines, but Microsoft's condition was that if the machine was powerful enough to run Vista, they had to use Vista.
Why isn't this $349 like all the other Netbooks with the same specs? Also, 10.1" is a bit too big, where are the 8.9" or smaller models?
It's because most ppl want 10 inch.
Did we forget the full size keyboard this baby sports?
I guess so.
Apparently all the people commenting are people who don't understand that this netbook isn't exactly like every other netbook. Similar yes, but identical, no.
It's certainly more unique than Samsung's NC10 SE that's $469 at Amazon.
I fail to see the value with having a netbook with the EXACT SAME SPECS as everyone else for much more money unless they have a five year warranty where an A+/MCP/Network+ latin beach model comes and blows me while replacing the LCD.
seriously.
There are other 10" netbooks with full size keyboards? Can you point them out?
Thanks!
Chris, can you not read? While the processor and memory are the same, this particular computer has a better speaker setup, a bigger keyboard, which is important to a lot of folks. Also you sometimes get what you pay for when you take the cheap seats.
Some have talked about the Asus Eee PC 1000HE being so great. I would agree that it is a nice setup, but unfortunately that tiny right shift key that no matter what anyone says is still crappy. We purchased a few of them and everyone has problem typing on them because of that crappy shift key. Yes it is better that previous models, but still not nearly as good as even the base Samsung NC10. The fact is that the newer processor has shown to not provide really any real difference in real world use. So that isn't really a benefit at all. We've had two of these ASUS power supplies die on us within 6 weeks. One has had wireless problems since the day it came out of the box. Now granted these maybe exceptions, but again you buy cheap, you sometimes get cheap!
I think the bigger keyboard for touch typist will be great! Samsung probably actually has these things priced to make a little money on them. Acer is practically giving away their computer and what is even worse is retailers aren't making but a few percent on them. They hope was to sell quantity, but unfortunately on the 10.1 model Asus and Samsung has actually out sold them.
