MSI's CULV-packin' X-Slim X340 ships this month in US
MSI already told us that its ultraslim, super-sexy, WiMAX-ready X-Slim X340 would be starting at right around $1,000, and now we're being told that the planet's first laptop to be based on Intel's CULV (consumer ultra low voltage) platform will be shipping in April. As in, this month. For the forgetful souls in the crowd, this here ultraportable will ship with an SU3500 CULV processor that consumes just 5.5 watts of power and a 4-cell battery. Now, to find a retailer 'round these parts willing to let you pre-order one...

It sure is... white.
What are you, racist?
I read McLovin.
Hear that? It's the winds of change... or maybe it's just kirfed air.
A troll not even worth the bandwidth you wasted on it.
Look Around You, you know he's right Look Around You.
Speaking of trolls...
did i get banned?
Not. Yet.
Woo Hoo can't wait hackintosh here we come.
The display doesn't look particularly well attached to the laptop. Can that thing piece of metal (?) really support the whole screen?
You're looking at it wrong, the thing holding it on there is as thick as that "thin piece of metal" all the way to the back corner of the laptop. The hinge is just white, the same color as the background.
Who gives a shit what logo is on laptop, if it works and looks good, maybe I'll buy one
1.3kg and 19.8mm... Nice!
Those specs aren't half bad

I'm waiting to see the benchmarks for that cpu and how it'll stack up to the air's core2duo.
I am afraid you will be disappointed, since it scored just a little bit higher than the netbooks(EeePC 1000HE),and the battery seems not last as it's supposed be.
I am looking at the x320 now, let's see the price if its worth.

Curious if this thing will be part of the mobile operator/netbook subsidy like Acer/Dell with AT&T/Verizon?

I understand the need for continued VGA output, but can't we have HDMI (or, shudder, mini-displayport) standard yet? Many conference rooms I've been in for years now have used large flatscreens (LCD/Plasma) for meetings instead of projectors. The big, dumb, blue-colored VGA port is always out of place anymore.
The x340 has HDMI and VGA, the x320 only has VGA.
See, MOST people that buy computers (about 94% of the world market) LIKE to have what we call "options". Since not everyone has a monitor or other display with HDMI, the OPTION to use VGA is there. This lets you use either one, or both in a multi-monitor setup. I know that these "options" make the world a vast and scary place but open your mind and just enjoy it. At least it's white, that should offer you some comfort.
How many products is MSI going to release? Damn.
Probably loads they have build OEM/ODM machines for years, And yes they have also sold laptops under the MSI brand for many years, as well as bare-bones PCs, Motherboards and graphics cards.
Ok so I can buy this or apple air refurbished for same price,.
What to get ??
depends on what you need it for. the Air has a more powerful processor and OSX and a sturdier chassis. The x340 is more of a netbook that can handle Vista. but the Air is refurb'd. then you have to consider how you'll get the MSI serviced?
I'm no Apple fan, but I'd take a refurb'ed Air and just slap Vista or 7 onto it for that sort of price. At least the Air is dual-fucking-core.
He's not asking for serious advice. That's Shank's new name.
Although a Macbook Air is a better choice, except the hard drive (which is the 4200 PATA on the refurbished model), I have had bad experience with Apple refurbished products, in which they break within a month, and Apple states there is nothing wrong with them. None of them physically broke, but problems with the hard drives, or in one case the iPod giving the "sad ipod" screen, kept occurring, and Apple refused to fix it saying they had not problems.
For an example, see this:
http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com/2007/03/01/refurbished-macbook-comes-with-the-problem-2/
I am not trying to say that Apple is worse than other organizations when it comes to refurbished products, however it is something to look out for, as opposed to a new computer.
On a less serious note, another thing to consider when buying an Apple product is the fact that you may become something like Guru (former Shank).... yeah... I would rather go for the netbook.
I'm intrigued by this (and more so the X320), but at the $1k MSRP a refurb MBA looks like a better deal... if the street price comes in a couple of hundred lower, then I'd be more interested... until refurb unibody MBs hit $1k.
Given the so-called high rate of user satisfaction (personally I think they're all idiots) with Apple products, would you want one that has been returned or resold?
Macbook, is that you? What is that ugly blue port you've been infected with?
Agreed on the VGA port. There's no reason for it. These ports are what make most notebooks so thick. It's asinine, especially when you can just put a thinner Displayport or HDMI port on there, and even make a little cash by making cables a separate purchase.
You know, that looks like the Macbook Air. Too bad it runs Windows.
not unless the owner turns transforms it into a mak
Eh, speak for yourself... I see running Windows as a plus, I'm going to have to install Windows on any large computer I want to run anyway (I can get away with Linux for netbook-type purposes), so why not have it come with it installed? (There's the crapware issue, maybe, but I know how to uninstall things so I don't care too much about that either) I've tried OS X, it doesn't run my software and honestly I didn't see anything about it that was so much better than Vista (but I like Vista, so this isn't much of an insult at all) that I would want to give up my legacy software either.
Still probably won't be getting this laptop, though.
Anyone know if this has a 1.8" HDD or 2.5"? 1.8" is so limited...
I think I'll wait for the X600 instead with the 15.6" screen:

Core 2 Solo?! Damn, so close!
wow those are some sharp edges.
Just tried this machine since its everywhere in Hong Kong. Huge disappointment as the keyboard is very mushy. Press the middle and I feel about 20-30mm of give.. and the ultra thin lid feels oh so disappointingly flimsy. Was planning to buy one once it hit the shelves given the hype and largely positive reviews, but a few minutes playing with it left me feeling oh so underwhelmed.
"..press the middle and I feel about 20-30mm of give..."
That's not a netbook, that's a sponge!
VGA?
It's still the most widely-implemented video-out connection for computers and monitors, so why not?
Also, I seriously doubt you're going to be using this to, say, play a BluRay Disc through your HDTV, so what's the point of putting HDMI on it?
