Lenovo's ThinkPad X301 now with $9,969 multi-touch trackpad option
About a year ago Lenovo's ThinkPad X300 launched as a direct competitor to Apple's slinky MacBook Air. Over that time, the ultra-slim Thinkpad with a face for business has come to either match or dominate the MBA in nearly every category except the sexy. Now you can tick off one more as the X301 brings a new multi-touch trackpad option with fingerprint reader. In the typical befuddlement that seems to greet every new on-line spec on the Lenovo store, the new TouchPad is listed as a $9,969 option. Too rich? They maybe the $8,402 bump from a 1.4GHz to new 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SU9600 processor will interest you?

i wonder if, after you purchased it, they would say "offer is not valid" like options that accidentally get priced too low,
or if they would just take your money :P
You should try it out and tell us what happens.
Too late! The extra processor and trackpad options have now gone (i'm viewing from the UK, though I followed the same link and all the prices are in $). Looks like I can't pay more than $3300 even if I want to :(
@ j_g_puff
As much as it pains me to say this, if you're really so anxious to get rid of that $3300 I'll take off your hands for you. No, no need to thank me, just remember that you owe me one...
;-)
Me thinks someone moved the decimal two places over. $99.69 for multitouch, $84.02 for the processor bump.
Hopefully that $8,402 will go towards a better screen. The LCsD on the X-Series Thinkpads are horrible.
I don't have one, but I understood that the X300's screen was mediocre, while the X301 was supposedly much improved. (different supplier - TMD vs Samsung or something)
Lenovo doesn't spend money making pretty screens. What you pay for in the notebook goes into power and build quality. I have an X61 and cannot complain. The screen is a little dull but the hinges are high quality as usual.
Are those prices Right? That's insane if so, $10,000 for a Laptop? Mac users rejoice you don't have the most expensive upgrade options after all.
You forgot to end your post with You DID forget, didn't you?
Damn Engadget scrubbing my post. How about add <sarcasm> after 'with'
Clearly someone misplaced a decimal point...
$84.02 for the processor and $99.69 on the touchpad seems about right.
I like it better when the decimal is misplaced in the other direction $.8402 and $.9969
Why is everyone turning to walmart-style pricing?..
Keep it in nice round figures people...
Check out the Anti-virus options, Hahaha.
Over $9,000 for any product!! I guess the fart Jim Goldman is right after all. :p
I've just configured it to reach $32,000.
@Saad Rabia:
It doen't matter if you choose 15, 24 or 36 month of Norton's Antivirus. So, that turns this on the first glance bad looking deal into a good one, doesn't it? :D
What currency is it in. Certainly it can't be the USD? Has the USD devalued that much after the TARP and the trillion $ stimulus package and budgets???
@ Saad Rabia:
Of course, you can configure the Mac Pro to go up near $32k too... but those prices are real.
Hmmmm for this price I could get 6 MacBook Pro 17" with 3.06 GHz processors and 8GB of RAM, then have money left over for someone to fuse them together getting the equivalent of 18.36 GHz and 48GB of RAM, which now Snow Leopard will support.
Apple is looking cheaper all the time:)
Perfect timing! I can buy it with the job i dont have with the credit I cant get.
And you can use it to track your shares that don't exist anymore.
Or check your balance at the bank which you now own
Let's look on the brightside, we'll always have free online porn :)
But our bandwith will be capped soon so we won't be able to download as much :(
These mistakes amaze me, with a company of this size you would think they would place their decimals right.
Also, reading through a BT DABS4Work catalogue, they said that a WD HDD has a 168Mb Cache.
16MB (168Mb) cache is fairly popular, WDs included. What's your point?
@Alex: Nice try, but 168Mb = 21MB.
168 Mb = 21 MB
It's Called A Calculator
Just went to the Lenovo site and configured the laptop with every upgrade option maxed except mobile broadband, it comes in at an (Ugly) hefty price tag of $21,041 - Wallet Rape if I Say So...
Whats wrong with mobile broadband?
"whats wrong with mobile broadband?"
Too expensive.
Not around here. In Sweden, the most expensive mobile 7.2 MBit broadband is $25/month.
Where is Joubei with his "this is just a PC trying to price their computers like MACs... Such a me too move! Any more tricks up your sleeve Micro$oft the biggest me too company in the world? me too me too me too me too I don't get laid AT ALL"?
That quotation is so taken out of context.
Neah non of those two upgrades interest me. I think I'll go with the most expensive upgrade which is nothing other than.... Norton Internet Security 2009!!! Priced ONLY $9,999!
Selecting the most expensive upgrades can get you a 30k laptop... What a bargain!
Let's hear some more about how macs are more expensive
Sad part is... this is a typo, the Macs are serious.
The government will take 10,000 of each.
Then lose them on a train
Containing your social security number.
Holy typo, Batman! I'll laugh my ass off if someone actually buys one like that.
Yes I already ordered it!!!
naah Just kidding but I put it on my wish list and sent it out to everyone I could to buy it for my birthday
XD
Oh, somebody is learning from Apple!
That'll be the Apple Tax then.
the fingerprint reader is really worth the extra 9,900 dollars, i brought two ;-)
Just think.... im 2 clicks away from owning $20,000 netbook that does jack poop. amazing
Not bad but still too cheap for me: can't wait for the swarosky version!
Damned Lenovo Tax.
"Over that time, the ultra-slim Thinkpad with a face for business has come to either match or dominate the MBA in nearly every category except the sexy"
This statement is completely false
x300- intel core 2 duo 1.6 GHZ 800 MHZ
MBA- intel core 2 duo 1.86 GHZ 1066 MHZ...... WIN
x300- intel graphics
MBA- NVIDIA GeForce 9400.... WIN
x300- upgrade option for multi-touch trackpad
MBA- multi-touch trackpad standard.... WIN
x300- about an inch thick
MBA- 0.16 - 0.76.... WIN
x300- DEAD UGLY
MBA- SEXY..... WIN
Fuck off, we know, the MBA is made of WIN.. until the fucking thing falls apart and isn't covered by your warranty.
1 broken hinge, 900 usd WIN?
Seriously who takes the MBA as a competitor towards any Business laptop is an idiot. No business person will choose an MBA over an Lenovo with replacable battery which let you work atleast without shutting down midflight. Also the possibility without installing additional crap to use Office or any other corporate software. Eitherway the illusion of Apple breaking through int he corporate world is non existent and with the current model will never happen.
I agree. The MBA is actually a really good deal compared to Vaio TT, Lenovo X30x and Dell Adamo in terms of price, performance and build quality. The only problem is the lack of ports and maybe for some the lack of optical drive.
