T-Mobile sells a million G1s in the US
We don't know why T-Mobile isn't trumpeting this, but Deutsche Telekom's Q1 results are out, and the multinational carrier says that over one million G1s have been sold in the US, making up a majority of the 1.5 million 3G devices currently active on T-Mo's network. That's quite an accomplishment in just six months, considering the Android handset launched without nationwide 3G coverage -- it's better now, but we're talking just 21 cities back in October. Of course, a million's just a drop in the bucked compared to the number of Blackberrys, iPhones, and Windows Mobile devices out there, but we've got enough of a soft spot for Android to overlook it -- now let's get some more devices out the door and really boost that marketshare number, shall we?

Do T-Mobile really only have 1.5 million 3G subscribers?
Probably not. I'm guessing that means 1.5 million 3G capable handsets sold, but I know that at least two of those G1s are in my house and we don't have 3G coverage here. I don't think it's a big deal, personally, I spent a week in a 3G covered area a couple months ago and the difference for most things was negligible, Edge is fine by me. I almost never even bother turning on the WiFi even when there is an available network in range, it just doesn't make a big enough difference in experience.
Well the G1 is the only true 3G smartphone available on the network. The other 3G phones are low end Nokias, a Sony Ericsson phone and two Samsung (Behold & Memoir) camera phones. Also just because users buy a 3G phone doesn't mean they have connected to a 3G tower.
All should rapidly change this summer as about 50-100 more markets get 3G and more smartphones such as the Touch Pro 2 come out.
G1 owner since day well....-2. Got mines before it launched. Yay!
Only had a issue where I was not getting any MMS messages, a simple reset did the trick for me. I was looking to get the Wing but I did not like how huge that was, and when I heard the G1 was coming I immediately researched and pre-ordered.
I simply love this phone, the GPS saved me MANY times, and I am able to do business on the go with the Gmail account, and document readers.
Looking for that successor now....Android for life!
What a failure ,overhyped.
Seems people still lusting after 2 year old iPhones over android ,sad.
I agree, you are a failure. Always good to see the trolls take the initiative and call themselves out to save the rest of us the work.
took them long enough...
We need an ARM cortex-A8 based Android device with a large touchscreen and hard keyboard on Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T!
I love my G1! But I HATE AT&T!
EDGE is getting steadily slower and have to switch to a 3G phone... :(. Where is our 850/1900 version!?!
I never used AT&T EDGE but i know Cincinnati Tmobile EDGE is damn fast and am continuely surprised bu it and i even tether with my g1 and my laptop speeds are pretty fast.. Hell 2 out of 3 times my G1 beat the iphone 3g in a loading Gizmodo.com race.. he was running on AT&T 3G i was running TMobile EDGE.. Im just wondering how much faster 3G in cincinnati is gonna be when we get it.
DEC 2008 consumer reports mag. Rated Tmobile Alot higher in coverage than AT&T, tmobile was second behind verizon and AT&T was barely above Sprint in the 50 or so major cities they tested.. Cingular sucked in my area back in the day and it seems not alot has changed except maybe the name.. isnt it pathtic that the former #1 carrier (now #2) has inferior coverage to the nations smallest nation carrier (tmobile). AT&T spends all there money on getting good devices and not strenthening there shitty call dropping network
I never ever thought that android's mission was to dominate the market with ONE phone, i think there strategy is more along of the lines of Windows in the computer world, sure the Imac and macbook's of the world might be some of the top selling hardwares but there OS footprint is miniscule (something Like 9%) where as windows has all kinds of form factors with all kinds of specs that appeal to all kinds of people not just the Uber cool, hence why they have 89 percent of the market. Soon will see all kinds of android devices in many form factors that appeal to alot of different people (all touch, touch screen w/keyboard, bb style, bar phone, and hell evern clam shells and sliders). The iphone isolates alot of people becuase of its lack of a physical keyboard which is at first cool but when your really trying to hammer out a long email it becomes very tedious, and on top of its NON multi tasking ability ( one of the few phones on the market that calls it self a smartphone yet cant even listen to pandora and surf the web at the same time wtf).
i happen to love my g1 and have really loved hacking it and installing the cupcake roms and Jf roms and just having fun with it, I had an iphone a few months back that i got for pretty cheap and was very pleased with it visually but having no push Gmail and no real time twitter and facebook notifications was just lame . Sold it and then apologized to my G1 for questioning its superiority... For me a smartphone is a phone that helps you and almost assists you in thinking and the iphone is not that, as everything it does has to be commanded by you before it acts.. Love how if someone asks me "where are you" one of my apps i have will then ask me if i want to send that person a picture of my location without me ever having to think about it.. Background processes FTW
I have to agree my wife has iphone nice adget but she is jealous that I get push email and when she uses google talk on her work computer it pushes right to my G1 BTW I have the dev phone on ATT!!!!
I love my G1, just updated with 1.5 a couple of days ago, it's like having a whole new phone. Finally video and A2DP, improved battery life, nice update! I initially chose my G1 over the iPhone primarily because of the removable battery and because I was intrigued by the open source concept and the new UI.
T-Mobile is releasing 3G all over the US in just few months, my city is next in June...I bet many more G1's are going to be sold.
They have to do this because G2 is coming up soon too.

"We don't know why T-Mobile isn't trumpeting this..."
because they're not apple.
I think that Android is doing exceptional in the current marketplace. Given how Google developed Android ( which was initially a acquisition ) into what it is today is extremely impressive. Google always has more of a long run view when it comes to things, so altough the G1 is a really awesome phone, I think the best is still on the horizon.
The iPhone comparisons will always be there, but just like all Apple products, the existing fanbase will always be there as well. As we're seeing devices like the Palm Pre and platforms like webOS creep up, we can make some predictions on where smartphones are going.
I think the main question is this: what company is in the best position as mobile device apps and OS's become increasingly "cloud" based?
The answer is the company that dominates that space: Google.
And, I have yet to even SEE one.
this probably says more about the lack of decent smart phone choice on t-mobile than anything else. i was on t-mobile for years and they always seemed to be a year or two behind on decent phones.
You are crazy, last time I was in a t-mo store they had about 40 handsets to chose from, including about 5 blackberries, a couple sidekicks, the G1 and a few other WinMO smartphones I didn't really look at.
I got my G1 two weeks ago and hands down is prob one the best phone I've ever had. And I'm writing a comment here from the G1 right now. The only thing that kills me is the poor battery performance. Other than that I got nothing else to complain about.
T-mobile is not trumpetting this because the 1-million unit count probably included units in the channels (as in with partners or independent stores.) The true number should be the number of subscribers using this phone and it could very well be way under the 1-million mark.
Seriously ,do people still feel that android open source better than say iPhone closed source ,?34000 apps as opposed to android apps , who doing more for the average joe blow , apple or android?
It's real simple why Open Source is better. You'll be able to get those same apps, across a multitude of phones, across a multitude of carriers. No marriage to AT&T or one brand's hardware.
Android, if it's capability is realized, will provide a robust user experience whatever service provider you choose. That alone warrants support.
Does Joe Blow really need 34,000 fart apps and koi pond simulators? That's the question you should be asking.
CUP CAKE PLZ NOW
Yeah, T-Mo sold 1mil G1's, and 999,999 were returned.
We had 2 of the crappy G1's and neither could send and receive SMS messages reliably. What do you people do with these things, use them as doorstops?
Really?
I dont have any problems outside of my IM mysteriously cutting off.
But I dont even use it, so I never checked it out.
But SMS and MMS sends perfectly on my phone.
*shrugs*
Maybe you just dont know how to use it...
@iDavey
Just ignore him, he's never even used a G1 before.
Great - so, you ignore people that don't fit into your worldview. Look, we tried two different G1's, and they both had problems reliably sending and receiving SMS messages. We're not the only ones. Why do you assume that because my experience is different from yours that it didn't happen?
Well you made a dumb comment as "1 million sold, 999,999 returned" based off your experience. Soooo....yeah. Stupid comments deserve a stupid response. Although my response wasnt really stupid...especially compared to yours...
I love my G1.
I like it even a little bit more now that i have a fatty battery on it.
I use it non-stop keeping up with news, listening to NPR internet radio, keeping up to date with engadget and more through twitter, chatting with friends through sms and im, keeping up an up to date calender to stay on track, checking emails, customizing the G1 and sooo much more. If my G1 ever fails on me, i'll replace it with another G1. Next G1 is going to be white. I like the keyboard so the G2 isn't really on my wish list.
I even find it quite attractive.
Yes i will marry my G1 some day.
Really? It's horrible esthetically. I think it's funny though because I know a few T-Mobile employees and most of them have unlocked iPhones w/ T-Mobile service.
I was one of those who pre-ordered and got the G1 phone a few days before it was officially suppose to turn up in the mail. I love this phone. I do more with this phone than I ever anticipating doing. I do agree the Market is not easy to find stuff and usually I will read a review about an app I might like to try then go searching in the market. I had to also concede to buying an extended battery a/k/a a brick but I is nice not having to have to charge my phone every other day. I wished T-Mobile would have ponied up the extended battery to G1 users like I kept reading about. The brick makes it lose it's almost svelte appearance and yes I get ridiculed about it looking brick like but hey as long as I don't have to worry about charging it so often, I can live with it.
