Fujitsu's FMV LOOX U C50N bumped up to 2GHz Atom Z550 proc, won't look back
Fujitsu just stuffed Intel's latest Atom chip, the 2GHz Atom Z550, into the FMV LU C50N UMPC, the Japanese LOOX U version of its U2010 / U820 UMPC. Of course, the processor breaks through Microsoft's restrictions on XP for netbooks, so out of the box you'll have to take the performance hit of Vista, and then perhaps get in on some Windows 7 RC action to really feel the speed boost. Other specs include just about anything else you might imagine could or couldn't fit into this form factor -- including a 5.6-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen.

Sounds like the nicest netbook yet.
notice the lack of price?
i doubt this is netbook territory, as much as we could wish for it
Just under a grand.
less bezel more screen bitches. :)

Correction: Those are prices are for the current U820, not this newer model.
The performance hit of Vista? How much RAM does it have?
1Gb
Then a hit there will be.
Well, believe it or not, it runs GREAT on Vista as long as you optimize some settings. That is, turn off indexing, some graphics crap, etc etc etc. I just got the old atom version of it and I absolutely love it. Granted it's very niche, but I wanted a computer that is literally pocketable (fits into a lab coat pocket) to take with me on my rotations.
If you need an extremely small computer that runs a full OS, there IS no other option. I have good eyes and can type up to 50 wpm on it, so to ME it works great. (your mileage/eyesight/hands may vary)
That netbook looks hot, and comact. Shame about the bezel, why can't they do some research on making screens that don't require huge ugly bezels? Seriously they ruin so many products.
It's a tablet. It helps to have some bezel to hold onto.
Also, for a device as small as it is, these Fujitsu tablets are pretty heavy. Again, it helps to have something to grip.
It shouldn't be a tablet tbh, the screen is so small it makes it pointless.
5.6-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen
WHAT!?
That's microscopic!
They are tiny! I've played with one at my local MicroCenter. They are smaller than the 7" eeePc, by a lot.
Yea, it's almost painful to look at.
It's not that bad really, though I still have better than 20/20 vision.
Okay, we get it, you can make computers very small. Now, instead of making worthless tiny-PCs that no one except the extremely pretentious will buy (normal people have eyes and spectacles) MAKE THIS SLIGHTLY SMALLER AND MAKE IT INTO A PHONE
Goodbye iPhone OS! Goodbye Symbian! Goodbye Windows "Mobile" (6.5 or 7 - it doesn't really matter)
HELLO: Ubuntu, Windows 7, OS X, etc.
There, now everyone is happy.
How much?
I bet this baby would fly on Ubuntu 9.04
Most of them are in the range of $1000.
second that! this thing is sick and throw some netbook Ubuntu on it and it is gold. maybe cheaper without an OS?
I just wish they would make a version of this in the 8.9 - 10.1" screen format as well. And NO the P-1630 isn't the same thing. The U820 has way more toys crammed inside. ;-)
That would be a radically different product.
Wow, this is actually really sexy! 1.3lbs, fantastic res, more than enough power, great form factor... The price is a tad high - I'd love to see it at a couple hundred cheaper than the current $1000 base price, and I wonder if the battery life will even come close to the rated 7-11 hrs...
Wow... 2Ghz atoms exist without OC?
Sound like a bizarre netbook..

It still has the weird "enormous bezel" issue. This screen could be a lot bigger...
like mentioned above, you're supposed to hold this thing with the screen pointed out and the keyboard hidden away, as a Tablet PC. Having to put fingers on the screen because there's no bezel to hang on to sucks.
mmm, I think the Raon Digital Everun Note D60H is superior to this, and probably cheaper... knowing Fujitsu
People, its a UMPC not a Netbook.
You already can't get it with XP Home in the US - they all come preloaded with Vista, so this is nothing new.
But, if you get a Vista Business model, Fujitsu tosses an XP Tablet restore CD in the box.
It looks like a worthy opponent for the Soni VaioP(which is not tablet).
I was thinking of buying a VaioP when I could find one in a brick and mortar shop , but now I would really be intrested in reading a comparate review of the two UMPC (or whatever they are).
Is the Sony's keyboard actually usable? I played with this one for a bit, and it's kind of like an oversized thumb board.
With 5.6 inch diagonal with 1280*800 you have a resolution of 262 dpi (pixels per inch) or 10 px/mm !!
My eeePC 1000H is detailed enough at 117 px/inch (4.6 px/mm)
Properly adjusting real dpi value in the OS should provide perfect paper-like text! (text does not need to shrink, only become sharper)
Wow, Vista rate's the graphics for Aero as 5.9! Something must be wrong.
I will say that unless you have at LEAST 20/20 vision and good dexterity/not too banana-handed, you need not apply. It works great for me for what I use it for. (I wanted a computer to take around with me wherever/whenever on my school rotations for on-the-fly SOAPS, drug information, and various other crap)
I so want one of these things with vendor supported Ubuntu and 3G.
Or Android and 3G.
