Sony unveiling UMD-less PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?
Whispers of a new or revised PSP have been growing decidedly louder as of late, and now 1UP's gotten a ton of new details from what it claims are "sources directly involved with the new system" -- our favorite kind of people, actually. Here's what they were told: UMD is out, replaced instead with options for either 8GB or 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also nixed is any hope of a "PSP-4000," with Sony opting instead to use a subtitle. Three rumored names include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!, the latter of which borrows from Sony's pre-existing Go! brand and suggests there might be a built-in camera à la PSP-3000's Go!Cam peripheral. The same D-pad, analog nub, and face button configuration remains, but they now slide out from the bottom of the unit (see mockup, pictured). Expected launch is September for Japan and late October / early November for US, and coming with 'em are over 100 classic and new downloadable titles including Gran Turismo Mobile as a headliner. Sony's supposedly going official with all this during its E3 press conference in early June, and for now they're opting to give the staple "does not comment on rumors or speculation" response. That's one mighty intriguing rumor -- we can only hope it pans out.

Oh cool! But I think they should put that single analog nub on the other side near the face buttons...
But then you would have to choose between the analog stick and the face buttons :(
Does the word MOUCKUP mean anything to any of you?
LOL mouckup.
(I can't resist.)
I know it's a mock-up, it's pretty damn obvious considering that no one has said that they had released any official images. It's also obvious because the shoulder buttons are way too high in that mock-up.
I was only giving my opinion, in the case that they do decide to have only one analog nub on the left side.
@Giroro, well, it'll be no different from a normal playstation controller. You use the right analog to look around right in shooters, right? Same thing will apply to this thing. The alternative is two analog nubs.
JUST ONE GODDAMNED ANALOG STICK?
WHAT THE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFK
Please Engadget...I need everyone to sign a petition to FORCE Sony to redesign this thing. 2 ANALOG STICKS or NO DEAL.
"MOUCKUP?"
No, not really.
Wow this is sad. I actually had to look at the picture to remember which side the face buttons were on since I haven't played video games in such a long time (since the PS1).
I disagree with the position of the triggers, they should be on the slide out portion so that the player can access them while playing.
No Second analog and touchscreen = fail
I know! It's got the room for the 2nd joystick. WTF, SONY! Who do we gotta wack to get a second joystick?? I have Ninja's standing by. If somebody has to die to make this happen, consider it done. (Ninja services provided by the Ask A Ninja guy)
It sounds more like a PSP redesign than a PSP2, if that's the case then another nub and touchscreen would make new games incompatible with old systems so would be out.
At least nintendo moved forward with DSi only games that have new features. Come on sony its about time for a new psp no one expects new games to be compatible with an old system.
Yep, totally "moucked up". *sigh*
Well i hope so I can't find my psp-1000 and need a new one so this wold be amazing
would*
I don't think misspelling would is what you should be worried about in that sentence.
This is all you need, period.
Yay! I think I might finally buy a PSP
what they need to do is release games on protected memory stick duos. just switch memory stick duos and your ready. Even 16gig isn't enough. Most psp games are about 2-4 gigs and that would fill the memory up so fast i wouldnt like deleting and adding new games all the time..
they need games on a memory stick duo.
No dual analogs...sigh. I give up on Sony portables
Agreed - wtf. When I had my PSP many years ago it became apparent the biggest flaw was the lack of a second analogue control. GTA worked, but would have been even better with that second knob.
hehe - Knob.
I consider myself sort of an Xbox fanboy(if that has anything to do with anything), but if this thing has dual analogs, I'm getting it for sure.
I agree, i wont buy ANOTHER PSP unless it has TWO knubs!!
Add insult to injury with them making hints at grant turismo mobile
I can't stand playing games on the y little nub of a joy stick. They need to mac it bigger (thinking wider not taller) and add another.
battle front was AWESOME...on the Playstation 2. the PSP it sucked. Buttons are no replacement for a good ole' joystick.
I was actually considering buying a sony system if they got this right. Fail (possibly).
Did you not notice the words "Artist's Rendering" on the front? I sure hope Sony doesn't make that mistake again. Stardust sucks with only one stick...
Well, how many analogue sticks does the DS have?
Taylor,
How many FPS does the DS have compared to the PSP?
Hopefully the new PSP gets that second nub, my right thumb is hella jealous of my left thumbs ability to rub up on that nub.
No, no dual analogues. It's a PSP. The PSP doesn't have dual analogues. Maybe the PSP2 will, but the PSP1 does not.
If it had dual analogues, no one could support them without having the title be incompatible to all the existing PSP owners, and no one's going to support both control regimens because it means either quick hacking or extra work, removing the whole point of having a single platform.
Im guessing it would be in between the PS2 and PS3 powerwise?
Close to PS2 than PSX
The hardware itself isn't getting an update. This is not the PSP2 but yet another revision of a dead work horse.
Mass Mass what are you talking about?
you realize it says no more UMD so why wouldn't it have new hardware? Its a good possibility i think.
But good move to get rid of UMD, i am not a big fan of digital download (perhaps because i live in Australia) but Sony probz should consider it they spend a lot of time and money on the PSP's online market and fun.
Dave C, getting rid of UMD does not mean there will be new hardware. I "got rid" of my UMD drive along time ago when I started using custom firmwares. Games run better from memory stick and I guess Sony realizes that now. Not to meantion the increased battery life as a result...
This look like a Sony Mylo 2 now. Man if they ditch the UMD then I might need a credit card or do you think they'll let us buy gift cards?
PSN Cards!!! Dume-Ahs!
I must be blind, because i cannot see the second analog stick so obviously needs to be there.
that so obviously*
its a fucking mock-up. that is NOT what it's gonna look like.
it's a mock-up off recent rumors meaning no second nub. Devs themselves have said that a second nub isn't happening due to very stupid reasons.
I'll have to see it to believe it. That slide out design has been floating around for a while and at least one announcement about it was a hoax.
FAKE!
As if it isn't obvious enough!
Hopefully there will be some way to get digital versions of games people have already bought on UMD format. I'm afraid they'll just offer some attachment that'll let you play umds.
@masterhalo: They sell PSN giftcards much like XB Live, Wii, and iTunes do. I can imagine you will be able to use them IF this is the direction the PSP is taking. I prefer the older PSP2 mockup as opposed to this though...
No PSN cards here in Canada.
Darn. >_>
Wait, let me get this straight:
I have a PSP-2000 with a couple of UMDs. So if I buy this new UMD-less model, how am I supposed to play my old games?
Like you just said, you have a PSP 2000.
I doubt they'd turn their back on all the UMD content. I bet they would offer a service that lets you plug in the game's serial code or something and it gives you a download of that game to play off of your memory stick... or something similar.
I'm betting a detachable UMD port that you can stick on the back when you need it.
Worst. Mock. Ever.
The old ones were better looking.
At least it really is just a mock....
What happened to that older/better slide out concept art?
this one is 1up's mock up
The lack of UMD drive will surely improve the overall battery lifetime. If the games and are there, I might be interested.
me too..if it has a decent web browser and a powerful wifi chipset, i'd rather have this than a touch for on-the-go web browsing (and no, i don't pay out the arse for mobile broadband on my phone...poor college student :( )
That design is ass. It hurts my wrists just looking at it. You wouldn't be able to play with it for more than a few minutes before carpel tunnel set in.
(Mockup.)
I realize that. All's I'm saying is it's ass.
They'd better include DJMAX: Portable and Portable2 on those "100 downloadable games" at launch.
Also, why didn't they add a second analog and another pair of triggers and a motion sensor? It would possibly became a PS3 remoteplay player?
Yes I also heard the disappointing news. No second nub, no touchscreen.
It's really sad.
Leave the Touch Screem to the DS... It wouldn't work well on this PSP because the screem is to high... well I guess if you wanted to your menus touchscreen friendlly but not in Video Games... Good luck with that... even the DS is having trouble figuring out good ways to use the touch screem as a real us in a game. All they find is minigames and stuff.
Yeah I can tell you don't have a DS.... the touchscreen is not only used for "minigames and stuff" (I think you've only saw videos of GTA:CW), there are entire phenomenal and addictive games with only touchscreen control, such as Ninja Gaiden and Big Bang Mini.
However, on the PSP, and with the processing power available, you can have playable serious RTS games like Command and Conquer and Company of Heroes.
you know, screw the touchscreen! thats all i need is my finger or a stylus obscuring the PSP's beautiful screen as I try to play games or whatever.
tho, if they do decide to add a second analog, they better think about how to include a second pair of shoulder buttons, because with your thumbs occupied, certian shooters (the only real genre in which a second analog stick is really neccessary) are going to have a hard time with the button config, you know, i hate to bring my right thumb off a stick in order to do something important or something that i have to do alot of. i'm just saying... it would be smart, but hard to implement on a psp.
I can understand getting rid of optical media, but no physical media at all? From a gaming perspective, I think Nintendo has the better route here with removable flash media... (Actually, flash media for larger games and downloadable for smaller games would probably be best)
sony's been there with memorysticks and new psp firmware updates with psn features.
Hm, good point, in theory they could just sell games on memory sticks, which would allow them to have it both ways.
Damn I preferred the square sides rather than the above. The picture rendered before this one was so much cooler. Frameless screen and all.
8 to 16 gigs, hmmm seems like the PS2p is coming to fruition. Just gotta have that second analogue stick and advanced ps3 remote play. Can't wait till it gets Hacked. CFW on this would be sweet....
The second nub would protect them from piracy. Simply because FPS multiplayer needs an original version of the game... but Sony is unofficially brain dead.
A touchscreen would also makes RTS games possible, making multiplayer attractive, again, needing an original title.
If these rumors are true, Sony just shot themselves in the foot.
If you like pirated games then go to Somalia.
Dual analog sticks or I'm not interested
Hmmm... I would like to have that second stick... but... IDK..
This smells all wrong.
How exactly are they going to sell games. Over the air doesnt work, unless it includes a 3G radio, and memory sticks cant be produced cheaply enough so it wouldnt make financial sense.
like how itouch sold games.
Maybe you're only thinking of the massively overpriced MemorySticks for sale in big box stores. I see 2 GB cards for like 8 bucks online. That's with the retailer's markup, so the production cost is even lower. Besides, Nintendo uses cards for the DS, and do you see it losing money? Hell no.
lol. 2gb for 8 bucks. have fun with ur fake sticks. the massive price in REAL MS's are due to licensing fees
http://www.memorycardzoo.com/147/Sandisk/Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-Gaming-(PSP-Memory)/2GB/
Not far off - memory sticks haven't been expensive for quite some time..
These won't be full-fledged memory sticks, they will be read-only and not re-writable. I read somewhere that read-only memory is easier to manufacture and cost less to make than the flash memory that can read AND write.
Grrr...Skip the slide-out buttons and give me a slide-out keyboard!!!
why don't add a SD slot (maybe they will)
should rival iPod touch/Nintendo DSi
I'd buy it if it can stream from my media server and PSP games can be stored/played on it.
Err... because it has a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot already?
Here's an idea for the nomenclature of the a fourth PSP without a 2nd analogue nub or a touchscreen:
PSP Fail.
@Giroro:
So I have to sell my PSP-2000 and all the UMDs in order to buy the new PSP, and on top of that, buy all the games that I already own, again?
Either that, or double-dip?
You're right. I have my PSP-2000. As for the new PSP, that's one less sale for Sony.
Oh well, their loss, not mine. And all this time I thought Sony wanted to sell more hardware!
Only one thumb stick? Has Sony really not learned anything?!?!? O_o
Boy am I happy I bought the DS lite instead of waiting for the PSP Fail.... no 2nd nub or touchscreen? Epic fail.
Would monsieur like some cheese with zat whine?
Make the" monsieurs" Mr.Better-than-everyone.
There's hardly anyone here not "whining" about that single nub.
Except most expressed their dissappointment once, which is enough. But you've whined several times in this thread alone and in laughably juvenile fashion tried to "stick it to Sony" (rawr) by saying you're so glad you got a DS. Oooooh, you sure told them off! LOL
can't wait for the homebrew... I hope it is amazing.. Like VNC my computer or some other SUPER REMOTE STUFF... and hacking... PLEASE MAKE IT HOMEBREW FRIENDLY AT THE VERY BEGINNING!!!
FORTY NINTH!
YOU WIN!!!!
You fail at failing.
haha that was actually refreshing
If they would just add a second nub... please! I would buy your product, Sony, if you would add a second nub.
Yeah, cause your DS Lite is chock full of analog sticks, right? moron
One analog stick = fail.
Dual Analog or NOTHIN!
no second analog nub.... nothing to see here move along!
GOD, ENOUGH with the freaking second analog stick! NO, it is NOT needed!!
What Sony needs to do to make sure this doesn't flop is:
Make sure that we can play all our old games on it via an exchange program or a free/less than $4 charge to get a digital version of the game you already own. (lets face it people, nothing is free in the world, look at apple charing people to get drm-free music [+ videos])
Add Bluetooth technology with that thing that lets it connect to bluetooth headphones. or better yet bluetooth 3.0!!!
add a Camera with at least 2mp resolution (don't be idiots like Nintendo)
And for GODS SAKES have a decent Web Browser that doesn't run out of Memory every freaking 2 seconds!!!
As well as real world applications to make people want to chose the PSP as their Computer on the go...okay so this may be reaching to far, but it would be cool... ha ha ha.
OH, and don't try and sell this for more than $200. If so, instant fail (the only reason for it to fail not some whinny little babies crying for a second nub they can touch and play with, face it, NEVER GONNA HAPPEN)
