Sony unveiling UMD-less PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?
Whispers of a new or revised PSP have been growing decidedly louder as of late, and now 1UP's gotten a ton of new details from what it claims are "sources directly involved with the new system" -- our favorite kind of people, actually. Here's what they were told: UMD is out, replaced instead with options for either 8GB or 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also nixed is any hope of a "PSP-4000," with Sony opting instead to use a subtitle. Three rumored names include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!, the latter of which borrows from Sony's pre-existing Go! brand and suggests there might be a built-in camera à la PSP-3000's Go!Cam peripheral. The same D-pad, analog nub, and face button configuration remains, but they now slide out from the bottom of the unit (see mockup, pictured). Expected launch is September for Japan and late October / early November for US, and coming with 'em are over 100 classic and new downloadable titles including Gran Turismo Mobile as a headliner. Sony's supposedly going official with all this during its E3 press conference in early June, and for now they're opting to give the staple "does not comment on rumors or speculation" response. That's one mighty intriguing rumor -- we can only hope it pans out.

Oh cool! But I think they should put that single analog nub on the other side near the face buttons...
But then you would have to choose between the analog stick and the face buttons :(
Does the word MOUCKUP mean anything to any of you?
LOL mouckup.
(I can't resist.)
I know it's a mock-up, it's pretty damn obvious considering that no one has said that they had released any official images. It's also obvious because the shoulder buttons are way too high in that mock-up.
I was only giving my opinion, in the case that they do decide to have only one analog nub on the left side.
@Giroro, well, it'll be no different from a normal playstation controller. You use the right analog to look around right in shooters, right? Same thing will apply to this thing. The alternative is two analog nubs.
JUST ONE GODDAMNED ANALOG STICK?
WHAT THE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFK
Please Engadget...I need everyone to sign a petition to FORCE Sony to redesign this thing. 2 ANALOG STICKS or NO DEAL.
"MOUCKUP?"
No, not really.
Wow this is sad. I actually had to look at the picture to remember which side the face buttons were on since I haven't played video games in such a long time (since the PS1).
I disagree with the position of the triggers, they should be on the slide out portion so that the player can access them while playing.
No Second analog and touchscreen = fail
I know! It's got the room for the 2nd joystick. WTF, SONY! Who do we gotta wack to get a second joystick?? I have Ninja's standing by. If somebody has to die to make this happen, consider it done. (Ninja services provided by the Ask A Ninja guy)
It sounds more like a PSP redesign than a PSP2, if that's the case then another nub and touchscreen would make new games incompatible with old systems so would be out.
At least nintendo moved forward with DSi only games that have new features. Come on sony its about time for a new psp no one expects new games to be compatible with an old system.
Yep, totally "moucked up". *sigh*
Well i hope so I can't find my psp-1000 and need a new one so this wold be amazing
would*
I don't think misspelling would is what you should be worried about in that sentence.
This is all you need, period.
Yay! I think I might finally buy a PSP
what they need to do is release games on protected memory stick duos. just switch memory stick duos and your ready. Even 16gig isn't enough. Most psp games are about 2-4 gigs and that would fill the memory up so fast i wouldnt like deleting and adding new games all the time..
they need games on a memory stick duo.
No dual analogs...sigh. I give up on Sony portables
Agreed - wtf. When I had my PSP many years ago it became apparent the biggest flaw was the lack of a second analogue control. GTA worked, but would have been even better with that second knob.
hehe - Knob.
I consider myself sort of an Xbox fanboy(if that has anything to do with anything), but if this thing has dual analogs, I'm getting it for sure.
I agree, i wont buy ANOTHER PSP unless it has TWO knubs!!
Add insult to injury with them making hints at grant turismo mobile
I can't stand playing games on the y little nub of a joy stick. They need to mac it bigger (thinking wider not taller) and add another.
battle front was AWESOME...on the Playstation 2. the PSP it sucked. Buttons are no replacement for a good ole' joystick.
I was actually considering buying a sony system if they got this right. Fail (possibly).
Did you not notice the words "Artist's Rendering" on the front? I sure hope Sony doesn't make that mistake again. Stardust sucks with only one stick...
Well, how many analogue sticks does the DS have?
Taylor,
How many FPS does the DS have compared to the PSP?
Hopefully the new PSP gets that second nub, my right thumb is hella jealous of my left thumbs ability to rub up on that nub.
No, no dual analogues. It's a PSP. The PSP doesn't have dual analogues. Maybe the PSP2 will, but the PSP1 does not.
If it had dual analogues, no one could support them without having the title be incompatible to all the existing PSP owners, and no one's going to support both control regimens because it means either quick hacking or extra work, removing the whole point of having a single platform.
Im guessing it would be in between the PS2 and PS3 powerwise?
Close to PS2 than PSX
The hardware itself isn't getting an update. This is not the PSP2 but yet another revision of a dead work horse.
Mass Mass what are you talking about?
you realize it says no more UMD so why wouldn't it have new hardware? Its a good possibility i think.
But good move to get rid of UMD, i am not a big fan of digital download (perhaps because i live in Australia) but Sony probz should consider it they spend a lot of time and money on the PSP's online market and fun.
Dave C, getting rid of UMD does not mean there will be new hardware. I "got rid" of my UMD drive along time ago when I started using custom firmwares. Games run better from memory stick and I guess Sony realizes that now. Not to meantion the increased battery life as a result...
This look like a Sony Mylo 2 now. Man if they ditch the UMD then I might need a credit card or do you think they'll let us buy gift cards?
PSN Cards!!! Dume-Ahs!
I must be blind, because i cannot see the second analog stick so obviously needs to be there.
that so obviously*
its a fucking mock-up. that is NOT what it's gonna look like.
it's a mock-up off recent rumors meaning no second nub. Devs themselves have said that a second nub isn't happening due to very stupid reasons.
I'll have to see it to believe it. That slide out design has been floating around for a while and at least one announcement about it was a hoax.
FAKE!
As if it isn't obvious enough!
Hopefully there will be some way to get digital versions of games people have already bought on UMD format. I'm afraid they'll just offer some attachment that'll let you play umds.
@masterhalo: They sell PSN giftcards much like XB Live, Wii, and iTunes do. I can imagine you will be able to use them IF this is the direction the PSP is taking. I prefer the older PSP2 mockup as opposed to this though...
No PSN cards here in Canada.
Darn. >_>
Wait, let me get this straight:
I have a PSP-2000 with a couple of UMDs. So if I buy this new UMD-less model, how am I supposed to play my old games?
Like you just said, you have a PSP 2000.
I doubt they'd turn their back on all the UMD content. I bet they would offer a service that lets you plug in the game's serial code or something and it gives you a download of that game to play off of your memory stick... or something similar.
