Whispers of a
new or revised PSP have been growing decidedly louder as of late, and now
1UP's gotten a ton of new details from what it claims are "sources directly involved with the new system" -- our favorite kind of people, actually. Here's what they were told:
UMD is out, replaced instead with options for either 8GB or 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also nixed is any hope of a "PSP-4000," with Sony opting instead to use a subtitle. Three rumored names include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go!, the latter of which borrows from Sony's pre-existing Go! brand and suggests there might be a built-in camera à la PSP-3000's
Go!Cam peripheral. The same D-pad, analog nub, and face button configuration remains, but they now slide out from the bottom of the unit (see mockup, pictured). Expected launch is September for Japan and late October / early November for US, and coming with 'em are over 100 classic and new downloadable titles including
Gran Turismo Mobile as a headliner.
Sony's supposedly going official with all this during its E3 press conference in early June, and for now they're opting to give the staple "does not comment on rumors or speculation" response. That's one mighty intriguing rumor -- we can only hope it pans out.
Oh and touch screen better be a given sony!! or you are indeed morons. Imagine sliding the XMB with a flick of your finger.... ah, joy =)
100% agree with you bro.
This is one of the worst mock-ups i've ever seen. Completely unergonomical design...
Well, the LR keys will be a little hard to reach...
hopefully it has dual sticks. I feel like the single stick really held psp games in the last gen. you could have some really nice games with that second stick in there.
My biggest problem with my PSP is that it feels so "offline"
We need some sort of wireless broadband connectivity on the device 3G/4G/CDMA... sheeyit, I'll even take EDGE on it. Just wire it up, Sony!
Sony, this is should be the proper psp2:

Yes.
No way! all the controls are in hard to reach places! and that would be about as comfortable to use as a thorn bush. i like the current shape, except i want the dualshock 3 features! i.e. two analogue sticks and 4 shoulder buttons. and the controls at the sides like they currently are!
But it looks like an iPhone!
I mean square, touchscreen, SILVER BEZEL!
Since my PSP got stolen last year on holiday, I've been wanting a new one but have been holding out for something.
Maybe this is it. Yes I'd like a second analogue input, touchscreen would be nice but I wouldn't complain if it wasn't there.
I look forward to E3 and, if this does turn out to be true, an official design.
Ah crap I knew I shouldn't have bought a PSP3000 recently!
Give us Divx!
With out a doubt, The main feature needed is a second analog stick. I could care less about any other changes they would make for the new PSP, however, a second analog stick is a must.
So, go with this and wait for homebrew to open up, or pick up a new GP2X Wiz? Probably not willing to go 100% PSN Store.
Do the brain dead photoshoppers ever think of how a 'handheld' device is supposed to fit in the ...hmm hands?
Shoulder buttons out of reach and no way to have a proper grip on this thing, they may as well add some spikes and razor blades.
Things I want for the "Next" PSP. 1. SECOND ANALOG STICK!~I will NOT purchase a "new" PSP without one! Anyone that wishes to play games that may be incompatible on the "new" PSP can get an old one or hang on to the one they have! (This is the same manner they have eliminated backwards compatability on the later model PS3's.) 2. AVCHD capable~480p device display,720p-1080i/p video output via mini-HDMI. I want to take my HD videos with me as well as upscaled games on my widesceen HDTV. 3. Bluetooth capabilities~This will let you use a PS3 controller on compatible games as well as obvious uses (without tethering to PS3). 3G capabilities~Why not?, 4. Application "store"/service~(Heard of the iPhone?) as well as a COMPLETE revamp of the Sony online portal/service. Just because it is "free" does not make it good. Sony and it's partners are sitting on a TON of content that could be sold/shared instead of collecting dust. (See MOST of the back-gaming catalog as well as Movies/TV and Music) This could all be offered non-DRM for application on the PSP, PS3, iPhone, whatever. 5. Multi-touch touchscreen would be nice as long as I do not have to keep track of a stylus. This would allow for a QWERTY keyboard as well as a near infinite number of applications. (iPhone) Most of this technology is currently in use on SONY products. I am a SONY fan (Not Fanboy), I buy Sony first and often. However I will not buy another PSP without some innovation, and a "slide" does not count.
current psp already has PSN store if you upgrade to latest firmware, you can buy/download psp demo/games from there.
even if they didnt change anything and just added a second analog stick it would be a huge improvement.
All of you guys asking for touchscreens and/or 3G...how much are you expecthing this to cost?
8-16G internal memory? cant they just let people host two mspd in it? I'd like two BETTER analog sticks, so it can play with ALL psx classic games through PSN download. also UMD can be an add-on module, which can be inter-changeable with additional battery, keyboard or memory card reader... well, just my 2 cents
I know I’m in the minority here, but I’m disappointed that it doesn’t include UMD. I currently have a bunch of games on UMD and don’t feel like repurchasing them. I also don’t have an unlimited budget for games, that’s why I buy them cheap / used and sell / trade a lot of older games.
UMD
Undeniably Mediocre Device
As everyone has stated, the lack of analogue stick will hold this thing back from having the gameplay it deserves, but I reckon if they were to transport sixaxis-style functionality, you could achieve all your 2nd stick stuff by tilting, which wouldn't be that bad. Maybe that'll be their "and one last thing..."
I've always wanted a PSP that:
1) doesn't play my games
2) comes in sliding form-factor for easier damage
3) relies on embedded flash media entirely
This should be a hit for Sony Computer Entertainment.
Gran Turismo Mobile should definitely be doable this time around using a 16GB memory chip. I would hope it'll run on a PSP-2000 with a 16GB Pro Duo, but that is very unlikely for Sony to give earlier PSP owners any breaks.
How about a flip version that has recesses on the upper portion to allow for actual analog STICKS instead of sliding buttons? They don't need to be as high as those on the regular PS controllers, but something better than sliding buttons. And as everyone else says, TWO sticks please. If not, no thanks.
I don't have a huge desire for a touch screen, but I think it'd help sell units even with a higher cost. There are many who buy cheap, but there are tons of folks who want high-tech even if it's not that necessary for the functionality of the system. If it's got gadgets, they want it.
So wireless Internet, gaming, movies, mp3s, video, images, camera....why not just add a phone and be done with it?
Someone has. it's called the iPhone.
Yeah, aside from the level of game quality and controls, the iPhone's got everything the yet-to-be-released PSP does, and more.
I must still be sleeping. I could swear I'm looking at a new PSP mock-up, reading the description, and there's only one analogue stick.
Wait...less features, higher price.....where have I heard this before....
Sony unveiling UMD-less PSP with slide-out buttons at E3?
NO
and are you all sure that is not just a kids mad photoshoppin' skillz0rz?
UMD was outdated by the time it was released. Not all new consoles should be able to play old formats. If you have a PSP now, you have a device that plays your UMD games. Nintendo recently removed the GBA port from the new DSi and no one cried. I would rather have new and innovative tech than a device with one foot in the past and one foot in the future, yet unable to perform either well.
Removing the UMD to a download system only means; purchasing overpriced Memory Stick cards (an older technology than UMD), higher priced games, never being able to buy used games, never being able to sell or trade your old games and never letting a friend borrow a game.
and most of you want this...
they say that's a mockup of what sony are doing. if sony are making ANOTHER psp with just ONE analogue stick, then i would call it more of a MUCKup. what is wrong with them? who agrees that the next psp should have ALL of the dualshock 3's functions? that way, the games will be better, people will actually WANT to buy this version and it can be used as a PS3 controller itself!
http://psp2hacks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/psp2concept2ac4.jpg
i would definately buy this!!
...or be able to use a PS3 controller with the PSP. Of course, they'd never make a game that required a PS3 controller. FPS games on the PSP are a pain, though.
lols engadget... how am i suppose to use the L and R buttons if it slides out like that?
you guys must have looong fingers
Isn't it going to slide closed if the shoulder buttons are pressed in-game? I suppose Sony could put a lock on, but that's one more thing to break on the PSP-[kewl-name-here].
While I appreciate the ability to download content, I prefer having the choice of downloadable or hard media. In my own experience, the companies I dealt with refused to replace or gave a severely diminished credit to purchase again from them. Also, when they change. Plus, I like that I can return defective or resell hard media at my local game stores.
I would rather have a UMD player instead of a mediocre camera. I want a superior portable game system, not an inferior hand-held entertainment center--and I'm going to vote with my dollars.
I liked that other mockup better.
I think everyone agree that first off, two analog sticks should be standard. Secondly, this design is utter BS because now the unit isn't ergonomically designed for easy access to the left and right triggers on the top part of the screen. Before you could wrap your hands around the entire unit, but I don't forsee this working out for them that much.
Damn, SOny. I want better hardware to give me better graphics. Not another make-up change...
This looks very uncomfortable to hold and play video games. It would be top heavy and force you to scrunch your hands for hours at a time. If they want slide out buttons, have them slide out from the sides and not underneath. Then add a qwerty as a slideout from the bottom.
Plus, pressing the shoulder buttons would require some form of finger acrobatics. Or alien fingers.
GT Mobile is the biggest piece of Vaporware since Duke Nukem Forever. I remember hearing about it and getting excited for it when I picked up my PSP in 2005. Maybe it's being developed by DNF's team....
Also, they'd better have 2 analog sticks. That was the single BIGGEST complaint over the first PSP! (followed by UMD).
If Sony doesn't include dual analog sticks it has lost the race with the big-screen phones. Dual Zeemote control sticks stuck to the iPhone? Why not! It is just a software hack. Sony has become the tin man if it blows this one. If I only had a brain.
you guys may need my blog =]
http://dvdrippers.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/how-to-dvd-movie-to-psp/
enjoy it. =]
surely a slide-out gimmick is going to make this machine ergonomically top-heavy? like trying to text on a phone with a bloody great screen weighing you down? only worse, because games are far more important than texting people ^_^'
