Lenovo's 15-inch IdeaPad Y550 laptop with Desktop Navigator now on sale
Is that, is that a laptop? Why yes, yes it is... that's Lenovo's IdeaPad Y550 now ready for purchase. In a world gone cuckoo for Atom-based netbooks, isn't it refreshing to see a 15.6-inch (1366 x 768 pixel) laptop that packs a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T4200 processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory and 250GB hard disk, 6-cell battery, integrated DVD writer, and touch-sensitive Desktop Navigator shortcut bar for $669? Why stop there though? $1,199 nabs 4GB of memory, 512MB of GeForce G 105M graphics, and 500GB of disk. For the same money you could gather a trio of netbooks into a personal grid computer of about the same power. Just be sure to let us know how that goes.
Update: Laptop above is the nearly-identical Y650. The Y550 is pictured after the break.
[Thanks, Sam]

oh man. this laptop looks sweet! nice! the price sure is right. =)
Yeah it looked nice.. but 15.6-inch (1366 x 768 pixel) ??? My SONY VAIO Z's smaller 13" screen already has (1600 x 900 pixel), why 1366px on 15.6" screen??
Because that's pretty much the standard at the moment.
It's the best balance between a) The best resolution for b) the best price.
Personally, I agree with you (my 15.4 inch Thinkpad has a 1680x1050 resolution), but that's just how things are.
Designed by Lenovo in California?
That was my first thought. I mean even the Windows fanboys have to admit it this time.
Yeah, looks like a MBP to me, kind of. That touch slider could be useful for zooming or as a jog dial in video editing, I suppose. Maybe it could be integrated with Reason.
I don't many people are Windows fanboys deep down. It's just a reaction against Apple fanboys and Apple marketing.
Oh, also, what a waste of space. There could be a much larger and more spacious keyboard on that laptop.
Reminds me more of a Vaio that came out years ago...
what on earth could that jog dial possibly do with reason? reason is like the only DAW where it's near pointless to scrub audio.
Oh. Well as you may have guessed, I've never used Reason. I was just taking a swag at a synth related program in which it would be useful. There has to be some way you could use that thing.
Assembled by Apple in China.
And while we're at it, can we just agree to refer to monitors by their resolution, rather than xxGA or the like? Resolution numbers are meaningful data, SXGA or whatever requires a google search.
OK. don't know how that happened...
I totally agree. I have always hated those worthless abbreviations. Nobody knows what they mean.
Spend a day or two on Wikipedia and everything should be alright.
desktop navigator+Stardock Objectdock=WIN, WIN & WIN
It seems like it would work well with the 7 Superbar, too.
isn't that a picture of a y650.. .the new y550's inside is black, and the speakers are higher
Yes. The picture is of Y650. Should still have Desktop Navigator though.
Just shipped a Y530 405167U for $494.10 +tx and free shipping. Plus $15 fatwallet cash back.
T6400 3gb ddr3, 250gb HD
Would have liked the new Y550 with the 16:9 screen. Its much nicer looking. Not worth the extra $275+ though. If I was going to spend that much I would get a studio 17 with a 1900x1200 screen.
I almost bought a Vostro a860 with a C2D, but it lacked HDMI out and had inferior parts in every category. Was about $76 less though.
Oh well. I was rather hoping for at least the option of a higher screen resolution but no such luck and 768 is just too small for me.
A 15" screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution is part of your idea of "refreshing"?
There’s no doubt about it, this notebook really packs of many stuffs. Definitely this will perform like a desktop.
that would be great for the mac osx dock! ^-^
Hackintoshing!
The desktop navigator is actually a pretty cool improvement on the OS X dock idea.
Yeah Chris, it's always a good idea to waste space and money on a feature that duplicates what can be done on the existing trackpad or with a mouse. Maybe they should add a nice row of colored buttons with blinking lights on each side of the keyboard. I figure twelve buttons would do it. Then you could assign them functions, 1 to 12, and call them FUNCTION BUTTONS. What do you think? Boy that would show those losers at Apple a thing or two about UI design.
Did you just make the assumption that I was digging on Apple? That's interesting. Have you looked at my post history? I'm pretty sure every post I've ever made about Apple has stated specifically that I'm a Mac user. I'm typing this on my 15" Unibody Macbook Pro and listening to my iPod touch while I'm waiting for a video to render in Final Cut.
I didn't say that it made the Apple dock obsolete. What I did say was that it was a cool improvement. I also don't see how my comment managed to spark such vitriol from you. Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today.
eh, the touch slider is very gimicky..
it would be far more useful located closer to the touch pad, ie above so you can use it without having to move your hand...
Is it just me or does it look like it's got a keyboard from a netbook? That is seriously small.
Did Engadget make a mockup of the Desktop Navigator in the zoomed highlight? iCal seems to be running alongside Internet Explorer.
On a mac book that touch sensitive bar would go great with the Dock!
Oh damn, someone said that already! Ignore comment above...
Don't like the keyboard layout at all. Way too much wasted space. Space out the keys and the trackpad
On a Mac, you would burn your finger if there was a touch strip located there.... (New MBP's at least).. I'm a little dissapointed that the Y-650 i ordered doesn't come with a 500gb hard drive like this one, or a GT 130m 512mp video card. Check out the specs.. Its a faster version of the 9600GT (http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-130M.13789.0.html).
BTW; I noticed that on a PDF from Lenovo's website, they shuold be offering a 1920x1080 screen for this Y550 and the Y650 hopefully sooner rather than later.
thats wierd... i just noticed that on the US website, its showing a G 105m 512mb graphics card, and on the Hong Kong / Chinese pages its showing the correct GT 130m... and the option to get a blue ray drive.
Cool. I think the sales point will be only on the design because the specs can be found in cheaper products.
best laptop
Are the y650 and y550 the same thickness?
